Seminar of the NYC Marxist Studies Collective at the People’s Forum
Spring 2019 / Conducted by Russell Dale
This course will be a careful reading of the first third of Marx’s great economic analysis and
critique of capitalism, Capital, volume one. This will be the first of three consecutive courses (Spring,
Summer, Fall 2019) in which we will carefully read and discuss the entire work. We will be
particularly concerned, as always, with issues of gender, race, and white supremacy in capitalist society
as well as how these are reflected in Marx’s work emerging from a tradition that was deeply steeped in
patriarchy and the growing racism and white supremacy of the 18th and early-19th centuries. This
course and year (2019) is also part of a longer three-year project in which we will carefully read all
three volumes of Capital.
All are welcome!
The course will run for 15 weeks on Friday evenings from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM starting on
Friday, February 15, 2019 and continuing until Friday, May 24, 2019. We will be reading the Ben
Fowkes translation of Marx’s Capital, volume one, published by Penguin. (Arrangements will be made
for students who cannot buy a copy of this book.)
FREE
This is an ongoing class and students are welcome to join at any point during the term.
