This movement is a left-wing political coalition, and it was the ruling party of Uruguay from 2005 to 2020 under the leadership of President Tabaré Vazquez (2005–2010; 2015–2020) and José “Pepe” Mujica (2010–2015). It was founded in 1971 and its first President was General Líber Seregni. It was declared illegal in 1973 after the military coup d’etat and emerged stronger than ever in 1984 when democracy was restored. Despite some splits of three parties over the years, it is a unique movement in the world, being able to maintain a coalition of a dozen diverse political parties that cover the whole spectrum of the left, from the Socialist and Communist Parties to the Movimiento de Participación Popular (MPP) led by José Mujica to the Partido Demócrata Cristiano. The MPP is the party that has gathered the most votes in the last elections followed by the Socialist Party, together they pull about half the votes of the FA in the general elections.
