Peter Kinoy is a New York based documentary editor and co-founder of Skylight, a human rights media organization.  His films WHEN THE MOUNTAINS TREMBLE, GRANITO, 500 YEARS and many more have played Sundance, NY Film Festival, Human Rights Watch Film Festival and national PBS.  In the 1990s his documentaries about poor people organizing in the US – TAKEOVER, POVERTY OUTLAW, OUTRIDERS played Sundance and PBS. In 1999 Kinoy helped organize the Media College of the University of the Poor and worked on media with numerous grass-roots organizing efforts.  Kinoy has taught film in Cuba, CCNY, is a member of the Writers Guild, and AMPAS.

TAKEOVER: Film screening and Q&A with the National Union of the Homeless

On May 1st, 1990, homeless people led a simultaneous takeover of empty government (HUD) houses in cities across the United States. Skylight Pictures followed the takeovers with 12 crews in the eight cities, documenting the secret planning, the illegal occupations, and the hopeful aftermath of this bold endeavor.

MEDIA MAKERS FOR A NEW WORLD: SESSION 2

The centerpiece of this 2nd session is a sneak preview screening of the 30-minute documentary film Empire State Rumblings. We will have the filmmakers and some activists involved in this organizing present for discussion after the film. The focus will be on how the filmmakers and activists collaborated around the project.
