Dear TPF community,
We are writing to let you know that we are temporarily closing The People’s Forum until further notice as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus.
We affirm that we are taking these precautions in solidarity with people’s struggles to overcome this virus. We firmly reject racist, xenophobic attempts to spread anti-Asian sentiments and specifically anti-Chinese rhetoric. The people of China were able to take effective measures to rapidly contain the outbreak. The number of new cases in China dropped from 3,000 a day to just 200 in about a month. Likewise, countries like Italy are also taking robust measures to confront the crisis.
By acting quickly and mobilizing their resources decisively, these societies have shown that the spread of the virus is not inevitable. We are therefore following their lead in being proactive and taking the situation seriously. The U.S. government has been insufficient in taking measures to address the spread of the virus. We also know that our healthcare system is not built for the well-being of the working class. With 31 million people uninsured, and 73% of those insured still unable to afford care, it is even more important that we do everything we can to contain the spread of this virus and protect the health of our people.
Though our physical space will be closed temporarily, we will continue to provide opportunities for political education online. Please keep an eye on your email and social media for updates and opportunities to stay engaged.
