Do academics have a monopoly over theory? During the 2018-2019 academic year at Columbia University, a group of students, professors and visitors organized a year long seminar to reimagine the boundaries between academia and activism. Seminar participants discussed questions that sought to unsettle the academy and its role in knowledge creation. We have asked: What is “legitimate” knowledge? What are our political obligations as academics and activists?

To further this conversation with a broader community of activists and academics, please join us for the conference titled The Master’s Tools: Activism and the Academy at The People’s Forum on April 20th, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The conference will include roundtables, discussions, and workshops with activists, scholars, and people who challenge the distinction between the two.
