Please join us for an in-person conversation with author Salvatore Engel-Di Mauro on his book, Socialist States and the Environment: Lessons for Eco-Socialist Futures, Professor Zhun Xu of John Jay college, CUNY, and Guillermo Barreto of Simon Bolívar University. With the current pushes for various Green New Deals, progressive politicians are seeking to find a solution for the climate crisis within the current global capitalist system. However, Engel-Di Mauro revisits and makes the case for examining the environmental practices and policies of socialist states–from the USSR to Cuba to China–in order to learn and create our own eco-socialist project. This event is co-sponsored by Pluto Press.

Salvatore Engel-Di Mauro is a Professor at the Geography Department of SUNY New Paltz. He is chief editor for the journal Capitalism Nature Socialism and co-founder, with Joel Kovel, of Ecosocialist Horizons, as well as the First Ecosocialist International in Veroes, Venezuela.

Zhun Xu (许准) is an Associate Professor of Economics at John Jay college, CUNY. He has previously taught at Howard University and 中国人民大学 (People’s University). He is the author of From Commune to Capitalism: How China’s Peasants Lost Collective Farming and Gained Urban Poverty, published by Monthly Review Press.

Guillermo Barreto is a biologist and an Associate Professor in the Departamento de Biología de Organismos at Universidad Simón Bolívar based in Venezuela. He has written on topics such as environmental issues, biodiversity management, science and technology management, and decolonial thinking.
