THREADS OF PALESTINE: AN INTRODUCTION TO TATREEZ w/ ABEER KHADER

Join Jordanian architect, designer, and cultural researcher Abeer Khader for a hands-on introduction to Tatreez, the traditional Palestinian art of counted-thread embroidery. More than a decorative practice, Tatreez is a visual language through which generations of Palestinian women have preserved memory, place, identity, and collective history.

Designed for complete beginners as well as participants with prior embroidery experience, this three-hour workshop introduces the cultural significance of Tatreez, the materials and techniques used in counted-thread embroidery, and the process of reading and stitching a gridded motif. Participants will work with Aida fabric and DMC pearl cotton, learn foundational stitches and finishing methods, and create an individual 4 × 4 inch embroidered artwork. Each finished piece will be placed in a small wooden frame to take home.

All materials will be provided. No previous embroidery experience is required.

Abeer Khader is a Jordanian-Palestinian embroiderer, architect, fashion designer, cultural researcher, and founder of Abeer Khader Studio. Drawing on her Jordanian-Palestinian cultural heritage, her interdisciplinary practice brings together embroidery, design, heritage, and community-based learning, with a particular focus on Palestinian and Jordanian embroidery traditions. Through her studio and embroidery workshop, she develops contemporary work rooted in cultural memory while supporting women artisans and creating opportunities for skills development and economic participation. Khader has facilitated embroidery workshops for universities, cultural institutions, local communities, and refugee communities across Jordan. She also writes on architecture, fashion, identity, and cultural heritage for independent Arab media platforms. Her teaching approach combines historical context, thoughtful design, and accessible hands-on instruction, welcoming participants of all experience levels.
