Who was Malcolm X? Was he a fiery demagogue that encouraged violent uprisings and a wielder of infectious mantras for Black Liberation? Or was he a leader, master-teacher and tireless activist whose integrity and unabashed principles made him a threat to the hegemonic interests of the state? Who was this historical figure and what discerning information can activists, teachers, scholars and political servants utilize in learning about Malcolm X, the man, versus propagated myths about his life and legacy? This presentation will be a memorial to 55th anniversary of Malcolm X’s assassination. Primarily, this work will examine the controversial figure to unpack and demarcate fact from fiction regarding this revolutionary career. By investigating Malcolm X from his Garveyite-influenced childhood to his untimely death on February 21, 1965, this presentation examines misleading propaganda, his life’s evolution, and silenced information which has contributed to our current understandings and misunderstandings of Malcolm X.
