This one-day course will explore how structural changes in US capitalism since the 1970s have transformed North Americans’ intimate life: our sexuality, relationships, marriages, families, and job expectations. These more personal areas have been neglected by rigorous Marxian analysis. In the US, the personal is a far more compelling arena for intervention than electoral politics but can be considered in a greater context in terms of redefining the political and what practice can be transformative for our everyday lives. This exploration is crucial to reaching out to Americans. The course will uncover the ways that that political , economic and personal realities constantly and mutually shape one another. We will attempt to unravel some of the ambiguities between our intimate worlds and the shaping a politics of the future.
