Artists Against Apartheid
For over 75 years, the Palestinian people have been subject to a violent and racist occupation by Israel. Every day, millions of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip face brutal and humiliating conditions including the demolition of their homes, endless military checkpoints that prevent their freedom of movement, bombardment of residential buildings, the desecration of holy sites, subjection to different laws based on race, and the indiscriminate murdering of Palestinian women, children, and men alike. These reprehensible conditions have rightfully earned Israel the designation as an apartheid state by human rights organizations across the globe.
In 2018-19, Palestinians in Gaza engaged in non-violent protests known as the Great March of Return in front of the walls erected by Israel around them. These peaceful protestors were gunned down with over 250 killed and several hundreds wounded. Their non-violent actions were then demonized for demanding the right to return to their homes that had been seized by the illegal Israeli occupation. When a government makes non-violent resistance impossible, when it brutalizes and murders those engaged in peaceful protest, it makes armed resistance inevitable.
The armed attacks on October 7 by Palestinian people cannot be de-contextualized from apartheid, extreme oppression, vicious brutality against protests and the open embrace by the Netanyahu government of open and extreme policies that aim to finally liquidate the Palestinian people’s just struggle to reclaim their homes and villages. Despite these facts, the armed resistance which is a direct and natural response to nearly a century of occupation, is characterized by the corporate media and Biden as “sheer evil.” This false propaganda continues to paint the Palestinian people’s resistance as unprovoked—and this is by design. This position demonizes the resistance of the oppressed while obfuscating the violence of the oppressor in order to justify the many war crimes and atrocities of Israel.
Israel’s unrelenting blockade and bombardments reveal a chilling objective—to erase Gaza from the face of the earth. It is a genocide, plain and stark. The call now, for all people guided by truth and conscience, is to respond with unclouded moral clarity and unwavering principle. Justice can only be served by targeting the true source of violence: the zionist occupation of Palestine.
As artists and cultural producers, we join hands with the people of the world and with the heroic people of Palestine, to stop this genocidal war and put an end to 75 years of occupation. We understand the power that our work has in shaping public opinion in our time. As artists we have a unique responsibility to use our voice and artistic practices to protest apartheid and amplify the just cause of the Palestinian people and their resistance against occupation and oppression.
We, the undersigned artists, stand in firm solidarity with those resisting occupation and fighting for their right to self-determination. We commit to using our platforms to challenge at every turn the massive misinformation campaigns waged by those who have a vested interest in the destruction of the Palestinian land and people without fear of repercussions. We dedicate ourselves to standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people and to use our artistic and cultural practices as tools of liberation in the struggle for sovereignty, dignity, and self-determination.

Artistas contra el apartheid
Desde hace más de 75 años, el pueblo palestino está sometido a una ocupación violenta y racista por parte de Israel. Cada día, millones de palestinos en Cisjordania y la Franja de Gaza se enfrentan a condiciones brutales y humillantes que incluyen la demolición de sus hogares, interminables puestos de control militar que impiden su libertad de movimiento, bombardeos de edificios residenciales, profanación de lugares sagrados, sometimiento a leyes diferentes en función de la raza y el asesinato indiscriminado de mujeres, niños y hombres palestinos por igual. Estas condiciones reprobables le han valido a Israel, con razón, la designación de Estado de apartheid por parte de organizaciones de derechos humanos de todo el mundo.
En 2018-19, los palestinos de Gaza participaron en protestas no violentas conocidas como la Gran Marcha del Retorno frente a los muros erigidos por Israel a su alrededor. Estos manifestantes pacíficos fueron abatidos a tiros con más de 250 muertos y varios centenares de heridos. Sus acciones no violentas fueron luego demonizadas por exigir el derecho a regresar a sus hogares que habían sido confiscados por la ocupación ilegal israelí. Cuando un gobierno hace imposible la resistencia no violenta, cuando brutaliza y asesina a quienes participan en protestas pacíficas, hace inevitable la resistencia armada.
Los ataques armados del 7 de octubre por parte del pueblo palestino no pueden descontextualizarse del apartheid, la opresión extrema, la brutalidad despiadada contra las protestas y la adopción abierta por parte del gobierno de Netanyahu de políticas abiertas y extremas que pretenden liquidar definitivamente la justa lucha del pueblo palestino por recuperar sus hogares y aldeas. A pesar de estos hechos, la resistencia armada, que es una respuesta directa y natural a casi un siglo de ocupación, es caracterizada por los medios corporativos y por Biden como “pura maldad”. Esta falsa propaganda sigue pintando la resistencia del pueblo palestino como no provocada – y esto es por diseño. Esta postura demoniza la resistencia de los oprimidos al tiempo que ofusca la violencia del opresor para justificar los numerosos crímenes de guerra y atrocidades de Israel.
El bloqueo y los bombardeos incesantes de Israel revelan un objetivo escalofriante: borrar Gaza de la faz de la tierra. Es un genocidio, simple y llanamente. El llamamiento que se hace ahora a todas las personas guiadas por la verdad y la conciencia es que respondan con claridad moral y principios inquebrantables. Sólo se puede hacer justicia atacando la verdadera fuente de la violencia: la ocupación sionista de Palestina.
Como artistas y productores culturales, nos unimos a los pueblos del mundo y al heroico pueblo de Palestina para detener esta guerra genocida y poner fin a 75 años de ocupación. Somos conscientes del poder que tiene nuestro trabajo a la hora de conformar la opinión pública de nuestro tiempo. Como artistas tenemos la responsabilidad única de utilizar nuestra voz y nuestras prácticas artísticas para protestar contra el apartheid y amplificar la justa causa del pueblo palestino y su resistencia contra la ocupación y la opresión.
Nosotros, los artistas abajo firmantes, nos solidarizamos firmemente con quienes resisten la ocupación y luchan por su derecho a la autodeterminación. Nos comprometemos a utilizar nuestras plataformas para desafiar en todo momento las masivas campañas de desinformación llevadas a cabo por quienes tienen intereses creados en la destrucción de la tierra y el pueblo palestinos sin temor a repercusiones. Nos comprometemos a solidarizarnos con el pueblo palestino y a utilizar nuestras prácticas artísticas y culturales como herramientas de liberación en la lucha por la soberanía, la dignidad y la autodeterminación.
