On the 10th anniversary of the peaceful resistance to treaty violations and militarized force at Standing Rock, join us for a screening of WE ARE UNARMED, a documentary film by Gwendolen Cates that follows three Indigenous women who played central roles. The film bears witness to this historic event from September 2016 to the forced evacuation on February 23rd, 2017. Media coverage glossed over historical and political context. At a critical moment in U.S. history, the film encourages us to study the past to understand the present. A panel discussion will follow the film.

Roberto Mukaro Borrero is a citizen and kasike (chief) of the Guainía Taino Tribe of Borikén and the Virgin Islands. He has a distinguished and diverse background in policy & program development, the arts, and rights advocacy, including a specialization on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. He retains over 25 years of experience actively engaging the United Nations system in thematic areas such as Sustainable Development and Climate Change, among others.
Gwendolen Cates is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, photographer, and author, whose films have been shown on PBS, at film festivals, colleges and universities, museums, and the UN. Her films include Water Flowing Together, which chronicles the life of Navajo/Puerto Rican New York City Ballet principal ballet dancer Jock Soto (PBS Independent Lens 2008); The Good Mind (2016) about Onondaga Nation leaders fighting for return of stolen lands; We Are Unarmed (2020); and The Doctrine (2025) about the impact of the Doctrine of Discovery on Indigenous Peoples and the planet today.
