Liberation Movements: the Case of Western Sahara

Every year, the Special Political and Decolonization (4th Committee) of the United Nations General Assembly considers issues covering decolonization-related items, including the case of Western Sahara. Once again, this year, petitioners from all around the world testify in support of the right to self-determination and independence of the Saharawi people, in accordance with General Assembly Resolution 1514(XV). Petitioners remind the world that in Africa one colony remains: Western Sahara, illegally occupied by Morocco.

In this context, a thematic conference will be held at The People’s Forum to shed light on the Sahrawi people’s struggle for self-determination and the lessons learned of liberation movements.

The event will bring together:

International jurists specialized in the right of peoples to self-determination.
The Representative of the Polisario Front to the United Nations.
Experts and activists committed to decolonization and justice.

Discussions will focus on:

The situation in occupied Western Sahara and in the refugee camps of Tindouf.
The role of international law and the rulings of the world’s highest courts.
Parallels with other liberation movements.

This conference will send a strong message: the Sahrawi people have the inalienable right to self-determination and independence; the natural resources of Western Sahara belong exclusively to the Sahrawi people; and all l Sahrawi political prisoners held arbitrarily in Moroccan prisons must be released.

An important event to understand, debate, and express solidarity to the Sahrawi people.
