September 9, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Please join us for a virtual discussion with Keeanga Yamahtta Taylor on her book, From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation, which was first published in 2016 but has since been republished this year. We will be discussing how Keeanga’s critical analysis on the current phase of Black liberation struggle in the U.S. has extended and adapted in the wake of the 2020 summer uprisings. We seek to discuss the emerging and adaptive systems that undergird the social crisis we face today and how the calls to action against police brutality connect and address the long history of racism and structural inequality imposed on Black people in the U.S. Most importantly, we will be discussing what we need to reach liberation. This event is co-sponsored by Haymarket Books.

Keeanga Yamahtta Taylor is a professor in the department of African American studies at Princeton University and the author of Race for Profit: How Banks and the Real Estate Industry Undermined Black Homeownership and editor of How We Get Free: Black Feminism and the Combahee River Collective. Her book From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation, which won the Lannan Cultural Freedom Award for an Especially Notable Book in 2016, was recently published in an expanded second edition by Haymarket, with a new foreword by Angela Y. Davis.

Note: While this event has been changed from in-person to being a virtual event, if you are in the New York area, we welcome you to join us at The People’s Forum for a live and collective in-person viewing of the talk. You will still be able to participate in the Q&A, get snacks and drinks from our cafe, and purchase a copy of the book, From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation and other books from our bookstore, 1804Books!
