The Brother from Another Planet (1984) is an independent science fiction film written and directed by John Sayles. The film follows an unnamed, mute, Black alien (played by Joe Morton) who crash-lands in Harlem, New York City. With human features but three-toed feet, he navigates the city, blending in among the community while trying to repair his ship and escape capture.
As he explores Harlem, the Brother encounters a wide range of people—working-class folks, gaining insight into the struggles and resilience of urban Black life in the 1980s. Meanwhile, two white extraterrestrial “Men in Black” pursue him, symbolizing oppressive forces seeking to control or exploit him.
