WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Join Esraa Warda for the Embodying Defiance: Algerian Rai Dance Workshop! This workshop bridges theory and practice, examining the history of Algerian dance as a revolutionary storytelling tool. The session will conclude with an immersive Raï dance workshop, accompanied by live percussion, where participants will embody the defiant spirit of the Algerian Rai movement while reflecting on its broader pedagogical implications. Dancers of all levels are welcome!
ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTIST
Featured in the NYT, BBC, PBS, Vogue Arabia, and The Metric, Esraa Warda is a prominent Algerian-American dance performer and educator based in New York, specializing in traditional and popular Algerian dance forms like Raï, Chaoui, and Assimi. Her work operates from a decolonial indigenous body knowledge, sexuality, and North African feminism(s) framework. Warda’s teaching pedagogy blends traditional embodied formats and community-based learning with a systematic approach to Algerian dance vocabulary.
