In the last few years, the female body has been used more than ever to politicize agendas that directly and blatantly disrespect women’s rights. We continue to be sold as sex symbols creating revenue for companies that have no respect for our bodies. Where men can whisper the slightest transgression against them women must scream. There is a disproportionate lack of individual self-governance between men and women.
During Women’s History Month at The People’s Forum, Curator and Creative Director, Amanda Johnson, is excited to present her first solo curatorial project, Bodies: Object, Product, Agency. The exhibition features the work of seven female artists living and working in the United States and Canada: Isadora Frost, Melissa Sutherland Ross, Muyassar Kurd, Nicole Lau, Helena Kubicka de Braganza, Danniel Swatosh, and Shayna Kiblin. These women create works referencing their own physical bodies, the bodies of others, and bodies in reference to land, water, and owned spaces. They speak to and for culture, ownership, gender roles & identity, spirituality, and personal truths. This presentation of works allows space for the artists and viewers to discuss their lives, health, political and gender identities, and the historical impact of being and living as a woman.
