Black Women Alliance: All Fighting Against Violence
Brazilian leaders talk about gender, racism and their struggle
Aliança Negra: Lutando Pelo Fim da Violência
Líderes brasileiras falam de gênero, racismo e de sua luta
Join us for a discussion on the struggle to end violence and demand protections to the black population in Brazil, which accounts for more than 54% of the country’s population.
Black Women who are leaders of 16 extraordinary black movements and organizations from Brazil will present what is the current status of gender and racial violence against women, black, brown, and LGBTQIA+ people, what they are doing to change this reality, and to bring awareness to the issues that they have faced in diverse battle fronts for decades.
These black women and black trans women are organized as the Black Women Alliance and represent very diverse corners of the large territorial spread that constitutes Brazil. They are fighting to change the justice system, and arbitrary and biased police, militia, and church actions against black citizens and black culture.
Join us as they seek to internationalize awareness, increase solidarity actions between social movements of Brazil, Latin America and the U.S., and change a society that has largely normalized violence against black people.
As participants of the United Nations Second Forum of Afro Descendants, this is the first time that such a large and diverse group of Brazilian Black Women leaders travel together to New York organized as the Black Women Alliance, for a large advocacy and exchange action.
This event is an opportunity for the group to meet with other activists, movements and progressive leaders in New York City. It is organized by the Defend Democracy in Brazil Committee – New York with support from The People’s Forum, in collaboration with the Black Women Alliance and Elas+ Giving for Change fund.
This will be a bilingual event with simultaneous interpretation
