FABRIC AS NARRATIVE: BATIK + NATURAL DYE w/ DRISHTI JAGGI

This workshop introduces participants to the traditional art of batik through a contemporary, accessible, and community-centered approach. Using wax-resist techniques, participants will learn how to design and create patterns on fabric while exploring the relationship between material, memory, and storytelling.
The workshop emphasizes experimentation, cultural appreciation, and hands-on learning, making batik approachable for beginners while still engaging for those with prior textile experience. Participants will be guided through the full batik process right away from sketching ideas and applying wax resist, to layering natural or fabric-safe dyes, and finally revealing their finished textile piece.
Alongside technical instruction, the workshop encourages participants to reflect on personal or collective narratives they wish to express through pattern, symbolism, and color.

Drishti Jaggi is a textile artist, educator, and researcher whose work centers on traditional batik techniques, natural dye practices, and community-based art education. Through hands-on workshops and interdisciplinary creative projects, they explore the relationship between craft, cultural storytelling, sustainability, and collective memory. Their teaching practice emphasizes accessible learning environments where participants engage with fabric drawing, wax-resist techniques, and experimental textile processes as tools for both artistic expression and cultural dialogue.
