Their work carries a rare depth and urgency\, and it’s an honor to host artists whose sound and vision feel so essential to this moment. \nDeerlady is an experimental rock band led by Odanak First Nation artist Mali Obomsawin with a rotating collective of band members. Their debut album Greatest Hits (2024) was praised by Sterogum\, KEXP and NPR for its lyricism and immense soundscapes. DESCRIPTION:Join editor Manolo De Los Santos in conversation with writer Vijay Prashad to shed light on the historic meeting between revolutionary movements from three continents that paved the way for international solidarity in the face of imperialism. Tricontinental\, Havana 1966: Speeches and Documents of the First Solidarity Conference of the Peoples for Africa\, Asia\, and Latin America brings together many of the monumental commitments that emerged from the conference\, including speeches\, resolutions\, and never-before-seen photos from this historic meeting. \nSixty years ago\, hundreds of revolutionary leaders—like Fidel Castro\, Amílcar Cabral\, and Salvador Allende—gathered in Havana\, Cuba. Hailing from eighty-two countries and representing national liberation movements\, communist parties\, and socialist states\, they all came with a singular objective: to build solidarity against US imperialism and its allies. \nRevolutionary forces were on the offensive: the Vietnamese were bravely fighting the US military\, South Africa was rising up against apartheid\, Palestine was resisting Zionist colonization\, among many other fronts of struggle. US imperialism\, on the defensive\, was wreaking havoc across the world—it became obvious that worldwide solidarity among revolutionary forces was a necessary step towards achieving total liberation. The Tricontinental was not only an acknowledgment of that fact\, but a promise to make that solidarity a material reality. Decades later\, US imperialism continues its assault on working and oppressed people across the world\, and this conference provides us a glimpse into what is necessary to build true liberation today.

Raised in NYC and DC\, Reed’s background ranges from classical training at Harlem School of the Arts\, to studying sound engineering & design at Berklee College of Music. \nReed’s 2025 LP CUNTRY is a sprawling folk-electronic offering exploring the rage that comes from grappling with the grips of labor — both on the body and in the American workplace. A double LP\, Side A pulls influence from the canon of American work songs — blues\, soul\, folk\, and country. Side B\, sonically dystopian and electronic forward\, references the format with a more rap-centric approach. DESCRIPTION:“UNDERSTANDING ZIONISM” \nClass 6 – Zionism and the Movement for Palestine in the US \nThis session will explore the role Zionism plays within the US as not simply support for Israel but as an extension of the logic of imperialism domestically. On a political and institutional level\, Zionism is a hegemonic ideological force. The network of pro-Israel organizations and lobby groups wield considerable influence and shape corporate media\, political actors\, and US institutional life in order to suppress the movement for Palestinian liberation. However\, at its core\, Zionism remains hegemonic because it also constitutes a core feature of US imperialist politics on a global scale. This session will discuss that while support for Zionism appears antithetical to liberal values typically espoused by US institutions who support Israel\, in reality Zionism lays bare the true commitment of these institutions to advancing imperialism\, corporate interests\, and the political and economic disenfranchisement of the US working class. This will lead us to understand what we are fighting for\, especially in the West\, and what we are up against as we continue to grow the movement for Palestine.

DESCRIPTION:“UNDERSTANDING ZIONISM” \nClass 5 – Israel’s Divided Society: Contemporary Zionism and its Contradictions \nThis session will investigate Zionist society through close examination of internal dynamics of Israel’s various religious\, geographic\, and ethnic settler communities and how such dynamics are exposed by Arab/Palestinian resistance projects. Through investigating the dialectical relationship between Zionism’s settler-colonial nature and the counter-forces of Arab resistance\, we will uncover the corollary that Zionist ideology inherently leads to genocide\, whether postulated as “leftwing” (Labor Zionism) or rightwing (Revisionist Zionism/Religious Zionism). Participants will come away with an understanding of how Israeli society’s divisions are a byproduct of its settler-colonial nature and its inability to solve the Palestine question (i.e. completely eliminate the Palestinian people and remove them from their land). Finally\, this session also investigates contradictions between Zionism and different factions of the US ruling class.

Since replacing Britain as the head of world imperialism at the end of World War Two\, the United States has increasingly deepened its relationship with Israel and the world Zionist movement on the basis of counterrevolution\, resulting in system-wide overlaps in the realms of profit accumulation\, ideology\, repression\, and militarism. We will study how Israel’s role as the cornerstone of the United States’ control of the West Asia region perpetually threatens Palestine’s “strategic depth” of Arab popular support with war-imposed ruin and dependency.

DESCRIPTION:“UNDERSTANDING ZIONISM” \nClass 2 -Breaking the Iron Wall: How Have Palestinian Revolutionaries Understood Zionism? \nIn 1923\, Ze’ev Jabotinsky (born Vladimir Jabotinsky)—genocidal forefather of the ruling Likud party and founder of the Betar Zionist Youth Movement—wrote that the Palestinian people would continue to resist the Zionist colonial project until “not a single breach is visible in the iron wall.” The continued resistance against the iron wall of  Zionist military\, political\, and ideological power\, proves that breaches remain. Palestinian revolutionaries have long viewed the study of Zionism as necessary for widening these breaches and defeating Zionism\, the project that usurps their land.  In this session\, we will study the works of two such revolutionaries\, Ghassan Kanafani and Walid Daqqa\, to understand the following questions: how did Zionism marshall tremendous amounts of support despite openly stating its racist and genocidal intentions in Palestine? Under what historical conditions did Zionist propaganda emerge\, and how does it function?  What strategies does Zionism use to undermine Palestinian resistance? Why is it important for the Palestine movement to continue to study Zionism?  Through studying the answers of Palestinian revolutionaries on these questions\, we will develop an analysis on Zionism capable of guiding political action against it.  \n

The Trinity of Fundamentals is the fictionalized account of former Palestinian prisoner Rafeedie’s nine-year experience hiding from the Occupation\, now presented in its first-ever English translation. \nWritten in 1993 during Rafeedie’s time in Israeli prison and confiscated by prison guards\, The Trinity of Fundamentals was smuggled out by Wisam’s comrades\, and soon after became a significant text for the Palestinian prisoner’s movement. From historical events like the First Intifada and the Gulf War to the deeply intimate moments of life in hiding\, this story gives us a glimpse into what life looks like when it is wholly dedicated to the cause of liberation and is transformed by revolution. As we continue on the path in defense of Gaza against the Zionist genocide\, we must work to deepen our collective understanding of the Palestinian struggle and its many manifestations across our noble history. \nLove\, revolution\, and life—these are the “trinity of fundamentals” that pave Kan’an’s path of struggle. Although the novel is set in the past\, it holds many lessons that resonate with our current political moment\, mobilizing us into collective action. \nThe event will be a discussion of the book with editors from PYM and 1804 Books\, followed by a Q&A with audience members. The discussion will also be live-streamed on our YouTube channel.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book talk on Class\, Race\, and Gender: Challenging the Injuries and Divisions of Capitalism with author Michael Zweig and organizers Jamel Coy Hudson\, Juliet Ucelli\, and Darinel Velasquez. Bringing forth the basic operations of capitalist economies\, it reveals what is driving many of today’s most urgent and vexing problems: the common origins of the inequalities of income\, wealth\, and power; environmental devastation; militarism; racism and white supremacy; patriarchy and male chauvinism; periodic economic crises; and the cultural conflicts that are tearing at US life. \nMichael Zweig illuminates all propositions with specific examples from US history\, from the first settlement of the New World to current life\, including his own lived experiences as an activist\, educator\, and organizer over the past six decades. As such\, the book is an urgently needed resource for activists and organizers seeking structural and moral transformation of life in the US. Building on his analysis\, Zweig also presents strategies for political action in electoral and movement-building work. \nJamel Coy Hudson is a lecturer\, professor\, and rhetorician. He has dedicated his academic pursuits to rhetorical studies\, culminating in degrees at the undergraduate\, graduate\, and doctoral levels. He is a Lecturer of Rhetoric and Public Advocacy in the Department of Communication Studies at CUNY Baruch College. In addition to his appointment at CUNY Baruch College\, he has also taught as a faculty member in the Department of Writing Studies and Rhetoric at his alma mater\, Hofstra University. Currently\, he serves as the Tri-chair of the New York State Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival and is committed to realizing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of the Beloved Community. \nJuliet Ucelli (she/her) is a founder of the Brecht Forum/NY Marxist School and Italian Americans for a Multicultural US (IAMUS)\, and a long-time organizer in public school\, anti-racist and anti-war movements. She has served in the national leadership of Liberation Road and writes and teaches on Marx’s Capital\, human development and psychology. \nDarinel Velasquez (he/him) is a Community Organizer with New York Communities for Change. He has organized multiple campaigns on climate justice\, public safety\, and education\, with a focus on housing/tenant rights. His most recent success was mobilizing tenants to win a 0% rent increase in the Village of Hempstead. Having completed the Studio Recording Technology program at Nassau Community College he emphasizes incorporating art and music into the movement space. \nMichael Zweig is the founding director of the Center for Study of Working Class Life and emeritus professor of economics at the State University of New York at Stony Brook\, where he received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He is a member of the New York State Coordinating Committee of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival and an elected member of the executive board of United University Professions (AFT 2190) at SUNY Stony Brook. Prior to Class\, Race\, and Gender: Challenging the Injuries and Divisions of Capitalism\, his books include The Working Class Majority: America’s Best Kept Secret and Religion and Economic Justice. He lives with his wife in New York City and on the North Fork of Long Island\, where for over thirty years he has served as a volunteer in the Southold Fire Department.

Jay is the Assistant Principal Violist of the Opera Philadelphia Orchestra\, a section member of the Hartford Symphony\, substitute violist with the Kennedy Center Opera Orchestra and the Memphis\, Virginia\, and Dallas Symphony Orchestras\, and has been invited to play with the New York Pops\, the American Composers Orchestra\, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra\, PROTESTRA\, ChamberQUEER\, NOVUS NY\, and the Metropolis Ensemble. They appeared in the official collaborative music video for Major Lazer & Marcus Mumford’s single Lay Your Head On Me\, released as a fundraiser for COVID-19 research efforts\, performed with Nigerian artist Burna Boy in his Hollywood Bowl debut\, and joined Audra McDonald this past December on Carnegie Hall’s Great Artists series. \nA prizewinner in national competitions held by the National Federation of Music Clubs\, the YoungArts Foundation\, the Music Teachers National Association and a recipient of a 2019 Juilliard Career Grant\, Jay is indebted to the Virtu Foundation and the American Viola Society for their past support through instrument and bow loans. Festival performance credits include Juilliard’s FOCUS Festival\, the Queens New Music Festival\, the New York String Orchestra Seminar\, Music Academy of the West\, Orpheus@Mannes\, and the Cabrillo\, Spoleto\, Thy\, Aspen\, Texas\, Manchester\, and Pacific Music Festivals. They have served as a Teaching Fellow at the Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program\, instructed at the Stony Brook University Chamber Strings Camp\, and currently teach at the Interlochen Center for the Arts Viola Intensive and on a substitute basis at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division. \nAfter taking their first viola lesson at age 14 at the Mannes Preparatory Division\, Jay graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy at 16 studying with Renee Skerik with their highest musical honor\, the Young Artist Award\, received their BM in Viola Performance from the Manhattan School of Music under Karen Ritscher on full scholarship\, and received their MM at the Juilliard School on a full-tuition Susan W. Rose Fellowship under the tutelage of Heidi Castleman and Misha Amory. Other important mentors include Anne Leilehua Lanzilotti and Lina Bahn. Away from the instrument\, Jay writes\, and was a finalist in the 2021 Mississippi Review & Meridian poetry prizes. Their poems can be found in the Cincinnati Review\, Poetry Online\, and Barrelhouse\, among other places\, and they enjoy reviewing concerts at Represent Classical. \n/ \nBorn in Port-au-Prince\, Haiti\, Angelique Montes began her cello studies at the age of 5 at The Suzuki School for Strings in Manhattan\, NY. Her debut solo performance was in 2010\, with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. At that time\, she attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts where she worked with renowned artists such as: Midori\, Carlos Miguel Prieto\, Jan Vogler\, Prazak String Quartet\, the Marsalis family\, and Yo-Yo Ma. \nMontes later attended the Oberlin Conservatory\, where she studied with Amir Eldan. While at Oberlin\, she soloed with the Oberlin Arts and Science Orchestra\, and received honors awards as a member of the Adelphe Piano Trio. Montes went on to study with Matthew Zalkind at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music\, and Alan Rafferty at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music\, where she received her doctoral degree. \nDuring her summers\, Angelique attended Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute\, Interlochen Summer Arts\, National Youth Orchestra of the USA\, National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute\, Colorado College Summer Music Festival\, Credo Music Festival\, Innsbrook Institute\, and Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival. \nHer debut album\, “Refraction” was released the summer of 2022\, and can be found on all streaming platforms\, as well as BandCamp.com for digital and physical purchase. Joined by historian Adam Tooze (Shutdown: How Covid Shook the World’s Economy)\, their discussion will illuminate the economic systems and strategies—from austerity\, to tax havens\, and beyond—that serve as the instruments that uphold and protect the capitalist system. \nWatch the livestream HERE \nClara E. Mattei is an Associate Professor in the Economics Department of The New School for Social Research\, and was a 2018-2019 member of the School of Social Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Studies. Her research contributes to the history of capitalism\, exploring the critical relation between economic ideas and technocratic policy making. She recently published her first book titled The Capital Order: How Economists Invented Austerity and Paved the Way to Fascism (University of Chicago Press\, November 2022)\, which was selected by the Financial Times as one of the best books of 2022 and is being translated in more than 10 languages.  It investigates the origins of austerity after the WWI crisis to understand its logic as a tool of reaction against any alternatives to capitalism.  She is currently working on a book project which critically reassesses the Golden Age of Capitalism (1945-1975) and its Keynesianism through the lens of austerity capitalism. Her writings have appeared on The Guardian\, Jacobin\, The Nation and Il Fatto Quotidiano—an Italian national newspaper she contributes to regularly. \n\nQuinn Slobodian is the author of Crack-Up Capitalism: Market Radicals and the Dream of a World without Democracy published by Metropolitan Books in the US\, Penguin in the UK\, Suhrkamp in Germany\, Seuil in France\, and elsewhere. His previous book\, Globalists: The End of Empire and the Birth of Neoliberalism (Harvard University Press\, 2018)\, won the American Historical Association’s George Louis Beer Prize and has been translated into seven languages. He is professor of history at Wellesley College\, contributing writer to New Statesman\, co-edits Contemporary European History and co-directs the History and Political Economy Project.\n\nAdam Tooze holds the Shelby Cullom Davis chair of History at Columbia University and serves as Director of the European Institute. In 2019\, Foreign Policy Magazine named him one of the top Global Thinkers of the decade. For his books\, Adam has won the Leverhulme prize fellowship\, the H-Soz-Kult Historisches Buch Prize\, the Longman History Today Prize\, the Wolfson Prize and the LA Times History Prize. In the handbook\, Sara includes Mona’s The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls as one of her recommended texts for feminist killjoys. \nSara Ahmed is an independent queer feminist scholar of colour. She is an unprofessional feminist and a professional feminist killjoy and her work is concerned with how power is experienced and challenged in everyday life and institutional cultures. She has just published her first trade book\, The Feminist Killjoy Handbook with Seal Press. Previous books (published by Duke University Press) include Complaint! (2021)\, What’s The Use? On the Uses of Use (2019)\, Living a Feminist Life (2017)\, Willful Subjects (2014)\, On Being Included: Racism and Diversity in Institutional Life (2012)\, The Promise of Happiness (2010) and Queer Phenomenology: Objects\, Orientations\, Others (2006). She is currently writing A Complainer’s Handbook: A Guide to Building Less Hostile Institutions and has begun a new project on common sense. She blogs at feministkilljoy.com. \nMona Eltahawy is a feminist author\, commentator\, and disruptor of patriarchy. She is founder and editor-in-chief of the newsletter FEMINIST GIANT. Her opinion essays have appeared in media across the world. Her first book Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution (2005) targeted patriarchy in the Middle East and North Africa and her second The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls (2019) took that disruption worldwide. DESCRIPTION:This year\, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Dialectics of Dependency\, Monthly Review Press released the first-ever English translation of Ruy Mauro Marini’s classic – one of the most important texts in the field of Latin American Dependency Theory.\n\nPlease join us in person on September 14th at The People’s Forum for a discussion between activists and writers from Mexico\, South Africa\, Venezuela\, the UK\, Canada and the United States\, as they discuss the influence of Marxist Dependency Theory.\n\n\n\nOne of the most influential — yet neglected —scholars in the English-speaking Left… \n\nConsidered one of the most important intellectuals in Latin American social thought\, the Brazilian writer Ruy Mauro Marini showed that underdevelopment and development are the result of relations between economies in the world market\, and the class relations they engender.  In particular\, Marini developed the concept of labor super-exploitation\, a phenomenon generated by the very role that Latin America plays in the international division of labor – and one now seen the world over.\n\nWritten during an upsurge of class struggle in the region in the 1970s\, and published by Monthly Review Press for the first time in English\, this foundational essay is proving more relevant than ever. The Dialectics of Dependency is an internationalist contribution from one Latin American Marxist to dispossessed and oppressed people struggling the world over\, and a gift to those who struggle from within the recesses of present-day imperialist centers—nourishing today’s efforts to think through the definition of “revolution” on a global scale.\n\n\n\nSPEAKERS\n\n\nTogether with Jaime Osorio\, Amanda Latimer co-edited and translated The Dialectics of Dependency (Monthly Review Press\, 2022).  She teaches politics and sociology at Kingston University (UK).  Her research examines how Brazilian workers and social movements cut across lines of difference\, nation and region to combat the race to the bottom facing workers everywhere in struggles against neoliberal trade deals.\n\nJoseph Mullen (chair) is a member of the Cadre Journal\, an anti-imperialist network that supports struggles in the Global South.  He is also involved with the Arghiri Emmanuel Association\, dedicated to theoretical discussion of unequal exchange and imperialism.\n\n\n\n\nWITH GUESTS\n\nCristóbal Reyes is a Mexican economist.  He is a professor at the School of Economics of the National Polytechnic Institute (Mexico).  He is currently pursuing a PhD in Latin American Studies\, and is co-author of two books on Marxist dependency theory.  Together with Jaime Osorio\, he maintains the online archive of works by Ruy Mauro Marini at Marini Escritos.\n\nChris Gilbert is a professor of political studies at the Universidad Bolivariana de Venezuela and creator and co-host of Escuela de Cuadros\, a Marxist educational television program and podcast. Gilbert is the author of Commune or Nothing! Venezuela’s Communal Movement and Its Socialist Project(Monthly Review Press\, 2023).\n\nPhethani Madzivhandila is a Pan Africanist Marxist Historian and an activist based in Azania (South Africa). If not reading historical literature or thinking about the Revolution\, he spends most of his time missing Walter Rodney and imagining a world without capitalism. His research interests draw from the historical and current development of racial capitalism in Africa and how it influences the social relations of agrarian change in rural areas.\n\nAndy Higginbottom supports movements fighting extractivism\, neocolonialism and oppression in Latin America\, South Africa and the Eelam Tamils. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-person book talk on Rivermouth: A Chronicle of Language\, Faith\, and Migration with author Alejandra Oliva and writer Carina del Valle Schorske. In this powerful and deeply felt polemic memoir\, Oliva\, a Mexican-American translator and immigrant justice activist\, offers a chronological document of her experience interpreting at the US-Mexico border\, and of the people she has encountered along the way. Tracing her family’s long and fluid relationship to the border\, each generation born on opposite sides of the Rio Grande\, and having worked on asylum cases since 2016\, she knows all too well the gravity of taking someone’s trauma and delivering it to the warped demands of the American immigration system. \nIn Rivermouth\, Oliva focuses on the physical spaces that make up different phases of immigration and looks at how language and opportunity move through each of them; from the river as the waterway that separates the US and Mexico\, to the table as the place over which Oliva prepares asylum seekers for their Credible Fear Interviews\, and finally\, to the wall as the behemoth imposition that runs along America’s southernmost border.
