DESCRIPTION:On the 10th anniversary of the peaceful resistance to treaty violations and militarized force at Standing Rock\, join us for a screening of WE ARE UNARMED\, a documentary film by Gwendolen Cates that follows three Indigenous women who played central roles. The film bears witness to this historic event from September 2016 to the forced evacuation on February 23rd\, 2017. Media coverage glossed over historical and political context. At a critical moment in U.S. history\, the film encourages us to study the past to understand the present. A panel discussion will follow the film. \nPanelists: \nRoberto Mukaro Borrero is a citizen and kasike (chief) of the Guainía Taino Tribe of Borikén and the Virgin Islands. He has a distinguished and diverse background in policy & program development\, the arts\, and rights advocacy\, including a specialization on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. He retains over 25 years of experience actively engaging the United Nations system in thematic areas such as Sustainable Development and Climate Change\, among others. \nGwendolen Cates is an award-winning documentary filmmaker\, photographer\, and author\, whose films have been shown on PBS\, at film festivals\, colleges and universities\, museums\, and the UN. Her films include Water Flowing Together\, which chronicles the life of Navajo/Puerto Rican New York City Ballet principal ballet dancer Jock Soto (PBS Independent Lens 2008); The Good Mind (2016) about Onondaga Nation leaders fighting for return of stolen lands; We Are Unarmed (2020); and The Doctrine (2025) about the impact of the Doctrine of Discovery on Indigenous Peoples and the planet today.

Elæ Moss Benedetto (they/ze) is a trans queer interspiritual minister formed across Catholic\, Buddhist\, Quaker\, earth-medicine\, and Jewish mystical traditions. They serve as Spiritual Care & Fellowship Director at Faith in Harm Reduction and an affiliated minister with the International One Spirit network\, and currently hold positions in Campus Ministry and as Faculty at Pratt Institute\, bringing a background in direct-action organizing\, mutual-aid system building\, and social-action-oriented art and media to their practice. A third-generation working-class New Yorker with lived experience in sex-work and substance-use communities\, Elæ is deeply committed to the ongoing reimagining of widely accessible spiritual care\, ritual\, and practice for all who have been harmed\, stigmatized\, or alienated by religion and the state. \nJehbreal Muhammad Jackson (a.k.a Dr. Angel) is an artist\, dramaturg\, scholar\, and organizer. She danced professionally with Dance Theater of Harlem\, is a vocalist with Samora Pinderhughes’s Healing Project choir\, has served as assistant dramaturg under Julia Reinhard Lupton for UC Irvine’s Shakespeare festival\, and as primary dramaturg for Niala Telfar’s “ICON” and Tethered Resident’s evening length work Images. As a published scholar\, Jehbreal researches the histories and theories of ballet\, ritual dances of the African diaspora\, music\, and race\, and as an organizer\, Jehbreal works as a core leader with Qween Jean and her Black Trans Liberation Kitchen\, feeding and clothing the Black and Brown trans community of New York every week at Judson Memorial Church. \nBorn in 1957\, the Reverend Yunus Coldman is a BIPOC leader from Buford\, South Carolina\, who now lives in New York City and plays several trans-spiritual roles simultaneously. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Soulful Touch Services. He is a licensed New York Wedding Officiant. He also offers various ceremonial and spiritual services (counsel\, meditation\, etc.). Additionally\, Reverend Yunus participates in many panel discussions and workshops to express his unique faith experiences and reflect on the intersections of being Black\, Transgender\, and masculine-identified. Seeking a religious path that would recognize the validity and diversity of multiple spiritual paths\, Reverend Yunus Coldman strove to become an ordained Interfaith Minister. He received his ministerial ordination from The New Seminary of Interfaith Studies\, Class of 2011.

DESCRIPTION:Year: 1989 | Director: Leon Hirszman | Duration: 85 mins  | Brazil \n(Portuguese with English subtitles) \n“ABC da Greve” is a 1989 Brazilian documentary film by Leon Hirszman\, on the strikes of the ABC Region labor movement in the late 1970s. ABC stands for the three cities that surround São Paulo City\, which once composed the largest industrial park of South America: Santo André\, São Bernardo do Campo\, São Caetano do Sul. \nThe film follows the metallurgical workers of the large transnational automobile factories located in the ABC Region\, São Paulo in the late 1970s in their struggle for better wages and better living conditions. Filmed in 16 mm\, ABC da Greve records the effervescence of the labor movement\, which mobilized to carry out the first strikes in Brazil since 1968. These strikes preceded the country’s political amnesty and redemocratization and occurred during a brutal military dictatorship. The workers union was led by the then union leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva\, known as Lula\, who rose to found the Workers Party (PT)\, and during his two first terms as President of Brazil (2003-2010)\, provoked major structural changes in Brazilian society. \nLula is currently serving his third term as President of Brazil (2023-present). It is crucial for Lula to defeat the far right yet again in Presidential elections in Brazil in 2026. If elected\, Lula will be the only Brazilian democratically-elected President for a fourth mandate. \nWe bring back this film in a time when mass workers mobilizations and mass strikes are sorely necessary in the United States. It will be followed by a discussion* on labor unions\, people’s power and organized political movement\, with invited co-discussants from the Party for Socialism & Liberation\, Defend Democracy in Brazil Committee\, local unions\, and upper intermediate students from the Portuguese for Social Transformation classes taught by Natalia de Campos/ Syncretic Pleasures at The People’s Forum \n*This screening will have a bilingual English/Portuguese post-film discussion. \nAnyone is welcome. This is a free screening.  \nA suggested donation of $5 and up will benefit The People’s Forum fundraiser for the construction of its new and permanent home.

Often these failures are not ours but ones we inherit through systems of Zionism\, colonialism\, white supremacy\, and other forms of silence of oppression. With GenderFail\, Oakley has published over 140 editions\, including works by A.L. Steiner\, Abigail Lucien\, Paul Soulellis\, Lex Brown\, Coco Klockner\, Morgan Bassichis\, Eileen Myles\, Pamela Sneed\, Viva Ruiz\, E. Jane\, and many\, more. Oakley has been an Artist in Residence with the Institute of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles (October 5\, 2024- March 02\, 25)\, Acre Residency (August 2022)\, and Wendy’s Subway (October 1\, 2018 – December 31\, 2018). In 2022\, Oakley was awarded a 3-year $30\,000 grant through the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation for their ongoing work with GenderFail. \nSpeaker bios: \nIyad Abou Gaida:  is a Lebanese farmer\, ecological designer\, architect\, and researcher\, and co-founder of EcoRove\, a collaborative research and storytelling platform. Iyad’s research engages ecologies of human and non-human beings through film\, illustration\, and spatial practice\, addressing aesthetic and socio-political urgencies for architecture and urbanism across dimensions and geographies. Through EcoRove\, Iyad’s work has been presented at the New Museum\, New Inc Demo 2025\, and the Tallinn Architecture Biennial (TAB). He was part of New Inc’s Creative Science Track (Year 11)\, and the work has been supported by the Alserkal Arts Foundation and AFAC\, with an honorary mention at Prix Ars Electronica. Iyad gained farming experience living on his ancestral terraced agricultural fields with his family in Hasbaya\, South Lebanon. He is the co-founder of Taïm Olive\, a producer of extra virgin olive oil that honors traditional farming practices and the resilience of the land. \nLara Arafeh:  is an independent curator\, writer\, and researcher based in Brooklyn. She also serves as the director of Majlis NY\, dedicated to community building\, promoting cultural exchange\, and showcasing voices from the SWANA. Her research focuses on decolonial methodologies and narrative histories while exploring the intricate intersections of culture\, identity\, and feminism. \nMahdi Sabbagh: is an architectural scholar and urbanist. He co-curates the Palestine Festival of Literature and serves as Editor at Large for the Avery Review. He is the editor of  Their Borders\, Our World (Haymarket Press\, 2024) and was a 2023 Matakyev Research Fellow at the Center for Imagination in the Borderlands. His work appears in the Journal of Public Culture\, Jerusalem Quarterly\, The Architectural Review\, Art Review\, Curbed\, Architecture of the Territory (Kaph Books\, 2022)\, Open Gaza (AUC Press\, 2021)\, and other publications. \nHussein Chaabane: is a Lebanese investigative journalist and war correspondent from Tyre and Ain Baal in Jabal Amel\, South Lebanon. He is a graduate of the Lebanese University. His work focuses on occupation\, political violence\, and the destruction of place\, with particular attention to South Lebanon and the histories carried by its people and landscape. Bringing together field reporting\, documentary investigation\, and legal analysis\, he is a journalist at Legal Agenda\, where he writes long-form investigations and critical analysis. \nMichelle Eid:  is a Lebanese researcher and Editor-in-Chief of Al Rawiya\, a platform and magazine covering stories and analyses on Bilad al-Sham. Her work explores socio-economic justice\, agropolitics\, and food sovereignty\, with a focus on the relationship between land\, identity\, and struggle. \nPublic Works: Public Works Studio is a Lebanon-based action research organization that uses a multidisciplinary approach to spatial justice. It addresses\, mobilizes around\, and actively responds to the chronic challenges facing just cities\, inclusive urban governance and equitable development in Lebanon.
