DESCRIPTION:EMBROIDERY AS MEMORY w/ NICOLE MONTGOMERY \nOne-day   |   6:00 – 8:30PM   |   Wednesday\, September 30   |   Sliding scale  \nThis embroidery workshop is designed for participants to build an understanding of basic stitches while exploring the importance of hand-sewing in history. After a technical demonstration\, the session will focus on stitchmaking as a form of storytelling. Participants are invited to embroider an image from memory\, drawing\, printed photograph\, or from the stencils provided. The workshop will culminate with learning how to mount your stitched images onto a textile of your choice. \nParticipants are welcome to bring photographs or sketches of their own to use as personal stencils. Examples: doors\, profile of a face\, flower. \nAll materials will be provided\, including the option to stitch on a tote or patch. \n__ \nNicole\, a native of Alexandria\, Virginia has been sewing since she was 12 years old. She made both of her high school prom dresses\, both being original and adapted designs. She studied fashion merchandising in college and went on to work as a visual merchandising coordinator and stylist for 10 years in home furnishings and fashion apparel. Once given the opportunity to follow her dreams in 2020\, has been working in the costume/wardrobe industry in NYC for the last 3 years and has worked on and off Broadway from American Ballet Theatre to &Juliet at The Stephen Sondheim Theater. The Bed Stuy Brooklyn neighborhood is where the heart of her work has begun to flourish. She teaches and volunteers with local non-profit organization Black Girls Sew\, where mentor and founder/creator\, Hekima Hapa leads classes and students through cut n sew fashion projects and field trips to experience and learn from the world around them.

DESCRIPTION:REVOLUTIONARY PRINT-MAKING w/ DANIEL DRENNAN ELAWAR \n6-week   |   5:30-8:30PM   |   Fridays\, October 2 through November 6   |   $250 \nThis six-session class provides an overview of relief print-making in terms of the political poster tradition. \nThe broadside or poster serves as an important historical printed record and archive of prevailing customs and culture\, as well as resistance to dominant cultural norms. His work\, based in a documentary genre\, focuses primarily on issues of displacement\, dispossession\, and disinheritance. His research and practice concerning decolonization and resistance led to the founding in 2009 of a Beirut-based artists’ collective\, ‎جمع اليد (Jamaa Al-Yad). He currently lives in Plainfield\, NJ and works as Program Manager for Frontline Arts in Branchburg\, NJ.

DESCRIPTION:PRINT-MAKING OPEN STUDIO w/ DANIEL + PETER + HAMZAH \nOne-day   |   11AM – 2PM   |   Saturday\, October 3 \nOpen studio is a space to develop a print-making project in community with other organizers\, artists\, and cultural workers. \nThese sessions are designed for those who have taken Screenprint 101 or Revolutionary Printmaking at The People’s Forum\, or who have experience with relief or screenprinting. \nEach session is drop-in and goals are defined by the participant. Basic tools and materials are available—including paper\, transparencies\, ink\, linoleum\, screens\, and emulsion. \nIf you would like the studio to print a transparency for your screenprint project\, please email the file to francesca.b@peoplesforum.org by noon on Thursday before the session with subject line ‘OPEN STUDIO PRINT’ and write the dimensions (inch by inch) in the body of the email. \nRegistration is required. Participants will create their own piece of jewelry from beginning to end during this session\, with the choice of making a necklace\, bracelet\, keychain or earrings. We will integrate up-cycled materials into our designs\, such as circuit boards and repurposed jewelry. \nThe workshop will feature a guided conversation on solarpunk ideas and e-waste. Reimagine discarded technology through traditional craft and transform it into a meaningful piece of wearable art. No prior experience required + all materials provided. Participants are welcomed to bring in pieces of their own to rework (earrings without a pair\, broken bracelets\, charms\, etc) \n__ \nKashi Saloni is an artist and educator whose work centers on repurposed and impermanent materials\, using art to imagine and build more sustainable futures.
