This workshop aims to expand the participants’ understanding of historical stencil and mesh-based printing techniques while encouraging a low cost\, DIY approach to printmaking. \n__

DESCRIPTION:THREADS OF PALESTINE: AN INTRODUCTION TO TATREEZ w/ ABEER KHADER \nOne-day  |  5:30 – 8:30PM  | Thursday\, September 24  |  Sliding scale \nJoin Jordanian architect\, designer\, and cultural researcher Abeer Khader for a hands-on introduction to Tatreez\, the traditional Palestinian art of counted-thread embroidery. More than a decorative practice\, Tatreez is a visual language through which generations of Palestinian women have preserved memory\, place\, identity\, and collective history. \nDesigned for complete beginners as well as participants with prior embroidery experience\, this three-hour workshop introduces the cultural significance of Tatreez\, the materials and techniques used in counted-thread embroidery\, and the process of reading and stitching a gridded motif. Participants will work with Aida fabric and DMC pearl cotton\, learn foundational stitches and finishing methods\, and create an individual 4 × 4 inch embroidered artwork. Each finished piece will be placed in a small wooden frame to take home. \nAll materials will be provided. No previous embroidery experience is required. \n__ \nAbeer Khader is a Jordanian-Palestinian embroiderer\, architect\, fashion designer\, cultural researcher\, and founder of Abeer Khader Studio. Drawing on her Jordanian-Palestinian cultural heritage\, her interdisciplinary practice brings together embroidery\, design\, heritage\, and community-based learning\, with a particular focus on Palestinian and Jordanian embroidery traditions. Through her studio and embroidery workshop\, she develops contemporary work rooted in cultural memory while supporting women artisans and creating opportunities for skills development and economic participation. Khader has facilitated embroidery workshops for universities\, cultural institutions\, local communities\, and refugee communities across Jordan. She also writes on architecture\, fashion\, identity\, and cultural heritage for independent Arab media platforms. Her teaching approach combines historical context\, thoughtful design\, and accessible hands-on instruction\, welcoming participants of all experience levels.

His research and practice concerning decolonization and resistance led to the founding in 2009 of a Beirut-based artists’ collective\, ‎جمع اليد (Jamaa Al-Yad). He currently manages the studio and workshops for Frontline Arts in Branchburg\, NJ. \nOne of Many artists\, Peter and Hamzah\, create fashion\, art\, and music as a way to drive positive change in the world. Participants will learn several techniques (collagraph\, charcoal transfer and image transfer) to make and take home one-of-a-kind prints on paper. We’ll spend this session exploring texture\, layering\, and composition through hands-on experimentation. Beginner friendly\, no experience needed! \nAll materials are provided. Participants are welcome to email francesca.b@peoplesforum.org one or two photographs (.jpg or .png) by midnight on September 14 to use for experimentation with image transfer during the session. \n__ \nKaili Woop is a multimedia artist and designer based in Astoria\, Queens\, working across printmaking and wearable art. She is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and a 2023 recipient of the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Award and the SUNY Chancellor Award. Her work has been exhibited at The Museum at FIT\, The Alpha Workshops Gallery\, and US+U Gallery. Woop has over three years of experience teaching hands on printmaking workshops with organizations including Oolite Arts\, Wynwood Walls\, US+U Gallery\, Yonkers Arts\, and Queens Collaborative. She is currently focused on developing a wearable art and design brand using traditional printmaking techniques for clothing and accessories.

Embroidery can be used for image making\, visible mending\, text\, multimedia collage\, and even to create 3-D forms. Participants will begin with this session learning a ‘vocabulary’ of traditional embroidery stitches\, making samplers to practice a variety of line\, texture\, images\, and techniques. In the second half of the workshop\, participants will apply what they’ve learned to create a wearable patch. We will learn some transfer techniques and how to stitch text. Patches could be an image or a political statement. Any level of experience is welcome. \n__ \nAnnie Zirin is an artist and educator with over 20 years of teaching experience. Annie’s studio practice involves fiber arts such as weaving\, crochet and embroidery\, as well as political comics and graphic arts. Ashley is also a Collage Artist\, having taught and facilitated various classes and workshop spaces on the analog art form. Examples: doors\, profile of a face\, flower. \nAll materials will be provided\, including the option to stitch on a tote or patch. \n__ \nNicole\, a native of Alexandria\, Virginia has been sewing since she was 12 years old. She made both of her high school prom dresses\, both being original and adapted designs. She studied fashion merchandising in college and went on to work as a visual merchandising coordinator and stylist for 10 years in home furnishings and fashion apparel. Once given the opportunity to follow her dreams in 2020\, has been working in the costume/wardrobe industry in NYC for the last 3 years and has worked on and off Broadway from American Ballet Theatre to &Juliet at The Stephen Sondheim Theater. The Bed Stuy Brooklyn neighborhood is where the heart of her work has begun to flourish. She teaches and volunteers with local non-profit organization Black Girls Sew\, where mentor and founder/creator\, Hekima Hapa leads classes and students through cut n sew fashion projects and field trips to experience and learn from the world around them.

When she was nine\, Bajonero moved to Dallas\, TX\, where she honed in on performing and working closely with Artisan Center Theatre. \nLater she moved to New York City to develop her craft at The New York Conservatory For The Dramatic Arts were she majored in Musical Theatre (May of 2021) . Each session covers a lesson relevant to the cyanotype process. This includes how to edit photos for larger negatives\, print on various surfaces\, tone\, and troubleshoot. Participants will spend their time experimenting and build each week to create several works per class. The goal is to leave the course with a holistic understanding of cyanotype printmaking! \nCyanotype 201 is designed for those who have taken a cyanotype course at TPF\, or have experience with the medium\, and want to explore it in more depth. \nWeek 1: Editing Cyanotype Negatives & Editing Large Negatives\nWeek 2: Larger Scale Cyanotypes + Fabric\nWeek 3: Toning \n__ \nPraise Fuller (b. Participants will gather inspiration from collage artists who have created intentional Agitprop and then be provided with prompts and materials to create their own. \n__ \nAshley Marie Lagrange\, (They/Them) is a therapist\, coach\, and collage artist born\, raised and currently residing in Queens\, New York to a multigenerational household Dominican l household. Ashley works in the day as a politicized therapist and coach for the QTBIPOC population which stemmed from their lived experience with madness and grassroots peer support organizing. Ashley is also a Collage Artist\, having taught and facilitated various classes and workshop spaces on the analog art form. Ashley is a member of DegrowNYC and previously sat as their Propaganda Chair.
