SUMMARY:Music\, Resistance\, Repression
DESCRIPTION:Some of the most prominent folk singers of the twentieth century\, Woody Guthrie\, ‘Sis Cunningham\, Pete Seeger\, Lee Hays\, Burl Ives\, etc.\, were also political activists with various associations with the American Communist Party. As a consequence the FBI\, along with other governmental and right-wing organizations were monitoring them\, keeping meticulous files running many thousands of pages\, and making (and carrying out) plans to purge them from the cultural realm.  \nUsing music\, video selections\, news clippings\, and records from extensive Freedom of Information Act filings — including never before released material — this presentation will bring to life these artists and the systematic way they were subject to government surveillance and suppression. \nSpeakers  \nAaron Leonard\, author of Folksingers and the FBI \nMat Callahan\, author of The Explosion of Deferred Dreams \nDJ Dennis O’Neill \nSpeaker Biographies  \nMat Callahan is a musician and author originally from San Francisco\, where he founded Komotion International. He is the author of three books\, Sex\, Death & the Angry Young Man\, Testimony\, and The Trouble with Music as well as the editor of Songs of Freedom: The James Connolly Songbook. He currently resides in Bern\, Switzerland. \nAaron Leonard is a writer and historian. He is a regular contributor to Truthout\, Rabble.ca\, the History News Network\, PhysicsWorld\, and Canadian Dimension magazine. His research interests focus on twentieth century US history\, particularly Sixties history. He is also a veteran political activist who has participated and written on events ranging from protests by Iranian students aiming to depose the Shah in the late 1970s\, the street actions in the wake of the torture of Abner Louima in 1996\, to the wave of demonstrations surrounding the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.   \n

SUMMARY:Introduction to Marxism for Women Only
DESCRIPTION:Duration: This is a ten-week class on Tuesdays 6:30-8:30pm\, starting October 2 and ending December 4. \nContent: We’ll explore some key concepts about human beings\, society and history\, and our relationship to the rest of nature. Readings will be short and accessible excerpts from writings by Marx and Engels or later Marxists. I believe that this theory can help us analyze the social and economic realities and structures we live in–who holds power and how–and fight more effectively for liberation. \nIn a continuing attempt to increase access for those who have been historically excluded\, turned off or silenced by the way this theory is often taught and discussed\, we are offering this intro class for women only. Everyone who identifies as a woman is welcome.  \nSome of the central questions that we’ll address are: \nHow did the oppression of women\, and the division of societies into people who work and others who exploit them\, originate and develop historically? What are the driving dynamics of capitalism that make it make it so productive\, innovative\, brutal and ecologically destructive? What intellectual tools can help us understand industry’s complex impacts on our bodies\, our psyches and the nature around us—impacts that capitalists\, and people who think like them\, don’t want to see or cannot see? What did Marx understand—and not understand—about white supremacy and Eurocentrism\, and how has that analysis been deepened and modified by later Marxists?

DESCRIPTION:Duration: 8-week course on Wednesdays 6-8pm\, from October 3 to November 28. \nContent: It is not our fellow artist who is the enemy\, but those who have made art the booty of exploitation\, and who use it as a deodorant for war and fascism. —Arnold Blanch\, First American Artists Congress\, 1936 \nArt can become an alternative form of revolt that both deepens our consciousness and inspires resistance. This 8-week survey will be an exploration of selected pieces of music\, visual art\, and includes the screening of two exemplary\, radical films: Soleil O  (dir. Mel Hondo\, France/Mauritania\, 1967)\, a scathing attack on colonialism and capitalism; and Council of the Gods\, (dir. Kurt Maetzig\, East Germany\, 1950) a fictional film linking Monsanto\, Rockefeller\, and Hitler. \nMusic selections will include works by John Coltrane (1926-1967)\, American jazz saxophonist\, composer\, and civil rights activist; Charles Haden (1938-2014) of the Charlie Haden Music Liberation Orchestra\, American jazz bassist and composer\, also engaged in anti-war and anti-imperialist movements; and Frederic Rzewski (1938-  )\, American composer and pianist\, engaged in anti-prison-industrial complex activity\, as well as being an anti-fascist agitator. Some of the visual art we will consider will be by the German muralist Werner Tuebke (1929-2004)\, including Peasant Wars panorama; Josep Renau (1907-1982) Spanish Civil War Communist\, creator of photomontages of great power and beauty; and Edward Keinholz (1927-1994)\, American anti-imperialist\, anti-U.S. sculptor from the 1960s. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:A discussion with editors Jake Alimahomed-Wilson and Immanuel Ness about their published book\, Choke Points: Logistics Workers Disrupting the Global Supply Chain. \nAbout the book: Global capitalism is always a precarious system. Relying on the steady flow of goods across the world\, transnational companies such as Walmart and Amazon depend on the work of millions in docks\, warehouses and logistics centers to keep goods moving. This is the global supply chain. If the chain is broken\, capitalism grinds to a halt. This talk concerns the book of the same name\, looking at case studies across the world to uncover a network of resistance by these workers who\, despite their importance\, face extreme exploitation and economic violence. \nExperiencing first hand wildcat strikes\, organized blockades and boycotts\, the authors have explored a diverse range of organizing and related activities\, from South China dockworkers to the transformation of the port of Piraeus in Greece\, and from the Southern California logistics sector\, to dock and logistical workers in Chile and unions in Turkey. \nJoin us for an evening of discussion on the potential strength our class has the ability to utilize in facing capital dominance during our period where capital has of necessity created this points that really give us the means of “choking” their power. \nOrganized by Left CoLab: A Convergent Project of Democracy at Work\, Institute for the Radical Imagination\, and the Marxist Education Project.
