Welcome to this intermediate Filipino Language Course. This course is intended for those who both feel ready and can demonstrate a basic proficiency in Filipino/Pilipino, or have a basic understanding of Tagalog upon which the national language is based. This course is largely a continuation of lessons learned from the basic course in this series, Makibaka: Fighting Back in Pilipino 1. Whether you are of Filipino heritage, a student of languages, a researcher, tourist, or just someone interested in learning a new language, this class is for you. Together, we will explore what it means to learn about the language of a nation forged in the flames of an anti-colonial revolution and continues to develop as a people in an ongoing national-democratic struggle. Through this course, we will focus on the practical and applied aspects of the Filipino language as well as study the historical, cultural, and political context that the Filipino people live in–both at home and abroad. As such, this course will have some measure of technical terminology that will be kept to a minimum, emphasizing instead the practical and day-to-day aspects of its use. Note, this course will be much more political than many other language courses. I very much hope that this course becomes a practical, engaging, and of course, enjoyable experience for all of us.
