What: Join us for a screening of two independent documentaries by Qian-Hui (Joyce) Xu — “500 Miles Away From Home” and “Dongting Village”. These films explore trauma healing, resilience, and quiet acts of social transformation in contemporary China. The screening will be followed by a post-screening Q&A and discussion session.
“500 Miles Away From Home” follows a Chinese printmaker with family trauma on a Lunar New Year journey to reconnect with her mother — a raw yet poetic portrayal of emotional recovery and self-growth through movement and memory.
“Dongting Village” is a sensory-rich portrait of the urban life of a historical community in Wuhan, China. The protagonist’s apartment resembles a small urban museum, showcasing the interweaving of Eastern and Western cultures in this small area, as well as the traces of social changes China has experienced over the past 100 years.
These two stories speak directly to immigrant and diasporic communities, intergenerational relationships, and the power of healing through storytelling and reconnection with place.
Fee: $10 registration fee and open to the public.
