We’re excited to announce a prison industrial complex (PIC) abolitionist propaganda and zine fair on Saturday August 21, from noon to 7 pm ET at the People’s Forum. As Critical Resistance defines it:

“PIC abolition is a political vision with the goal of eliminating imprisonment, policing, and surveillance and creating lasting alternatives to punishment and imprisonment […] Abolition isn’t just about getting rid of buildings full of cages. It’s also about undoing the society we live in because the PIC both feeds on and maintains oppression and inequalities through punishment, violence, and controls millions of people. Because the PIC is not an isolated system, abolition is a broad strategy. An abolitionist vision means that we must build models today that can represent how we want to live in the future. It means developing practical strategies for taking small steps that move us toward making our dreams real and that lead us all to believe that things really could be different.”

Over the past few months and years, PIC abolition has become more popular as a politic, ideology and organizing strategy. The abolitionist propaganda and zine fair will offer a space where people who have created educational and organizing materials including zines, pamphlets, posters, stickers, buttons and more can share abolitionist ideas and messages and can freely give away, trade and sell some of these items.

WORKSHOPS
12:30 – 1:30 pm: Zines as a Practice of Abolition

Facilitated by neta bomani

Zines hold both the memory and poetics of sociopolitical movements. We can feel the effect of zines in their capacity to serve as resources for oppressed communities; publish outside of mainstream channels; communicate through prison walls; support countless movements from the Black Freedom Struggle to the Labor movement; and expand radical imaginations. In this workshop, we will study histories and theories of zines as we engage in the interdisciplinary practice of zine-making used by artists, archivists, community organizers and independent publishers alike through simple do-it-yourself pamphleting techniques.

2:00-3:00 pm: Zine Readings

Come hear various participants in the zine fair read and share their work. Bring your zines to share too.

4:00-5:00 pm: Using Children’s Books as Abolitionist Text

Facilitated by Mariame Kaba

Children’s books cover a number of issues that are important to social justice. They can also be useful to helping adults understand complex issues. Join educator and organizer Mariame Kaba for a discussion about how children’s books can be used to engage in conversations about prison industrial complex (PIC) abolition for people of all ages.

We are accepting donations that will be used to provide refreshments throughout the day to attendees and participants.
