BOOK TALK: PROPHET OF DISCONTENT
October 13 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Please join us for a virtual conversation with authors Jared A. Loggins and Andrew J. Douglas on their book, Prophet of Discontent: Martin Luther King Jr. and the Critique of Racial Capitalism. Although stories and political impact of Martin Luther King Jr.’s writing and work are taught in almost every classroom in the U.S., traditional education often omits discussion of his more radical thinking and analysis. In their new book, Loggins and Douglas revive his critique on capitalist modes of production, which he knew needed to be critically addressed and struggled with to achieve Black liberation. Through this event, we will discuss Loggins and Douglas’ assessment of Dr. King and connect King’s economic analysis to the current struggles of Black movements around the U.S. today.
Jared A. Loggins is an assistant professor of Black studies and political science at Amherst College.
Andrew J. Douglas is a professor of political science and a faculty affiliate in Africana studies and international comparative labor studies at Morehouse College.
