The focus of this course is to prepare students for non-verbal interaction and communication with members of the deaf community. You’ll learn useful vocabulary and you’ll be able to hold meaningful conversations about various topics. But it’s not all serious – you’ll also learn how to tell jokes\, use common expressions and sayings\, and relay anecdotes to your audience. DESCRIPTION:An interactive live journalism show about the devastating and traumatic impacts of Israel’s use of drones in the besieged Gaza Strip. \nBy tying together personal narratives and documentation about the on-the-ground reality of this genocide\, Living with Drones weaves a compelling narrative that asks audiences to engage with violations of humanitarian and international law in Gaza since October 2023. \nEmploying the war diary narrative\, the show takes audiences into the day-to-day experiences of life in Gaza while drawing parallels between previous wars and the continued assault on Gaza today. DESCRIPTION:MONOPRINTING WITH GELLIPLATES w/ KAILI WOOP \nOne-day   |   5:30 – 8:30PM   |   Wednesday\, September 16  |  Sliding Scale \nCreate multi-layer monotype prints without a press! Participants will learn several techniques (collagraph\, charcoal transfer and image transfer) to make and take home one-of-a-kind prints on paper. We’ll spend this session exploring texture\, layering\, and composition through hands-on experimentation. Beginner friendly\, no experience needed! \nAll materials are provided. Participants are welcome to email francesca.b@peoplesforum.org one or two photographs (.jpg or .png) by midnight on September 14 to use for experimentation with image transfer during the session. \n__ \nKaili Woop is a multimedia artist and designer based in Astoria\, Queens\, working across printmaking and wearable art. She is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and a 2023 recipient of the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Award and the SUNY Chancellor Award. Her work has been exhibited at The Museum at FIT\, The Alpha Workshops Gallery\, and US+U Gallery. Woop has over three years of experience teaching hands on printmaking workshops with organizations including Oolite Arts\, Wynwood Walls\, US+U Gallery\, Yonkers Arts\, and Queens Collaborative. She is currently focused on developing a wearable art and design brand using traditional printmaking techniques for clothing and accessories.

SUMMARY:A Teach-In: Practicing Solidarity Journalism through Living with Drones
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session on how journalists can center non-dominant perspectives\, producing journalism that serves the public. \n\n\n\n\nThree years into the documentation of a genocide in Gaza\, join stitched! studio for a participatory session exploring how journalists can shift public narratives\, center non-dominant perspectives\, and produce care-centered work that empowers publics in democracies. \nGaza remains one of the most misrepresented and underreported regions in the media. Why is this the case? How can we respond to this reality? What does it mean to produce journalism in a profession that claims to challenge power and speak truth to it? \nThis event\, brought to you by stitched! live journalism studio demonstrates a (close-to) decolonial approach to centre dismissed\, ignored or politically decentred narratives. By using case studies from previous live journalism shows — Living with Drones\, Childhood\, Interrupted and Harmed in Hamilton — this teach-in illustrates a way for journalists to develop and share stories with competence and standards of care by adopting a solidarity journalism framework. \nWhat is the role of journalism in democracies? How does one create informed\, engaged communities committed to ethical\, relevant and important storytelling? In this teach-in\, attendees will be introduced to unconventional journalism roles like those of the community gatherer and the storylistener. By equipping attendees with knowledge and resources\, we ensure that voices from Gaza are heard and amplified beyond the constraints of mainstream outlets. \nThis teach-in led by stitched! practitioners will help attendees: \n\nCentre the value and proposition of solidarity journalism (theorized by Professor Anita Varma) as a framework for journalistic work\nDemonstrate its effectiveness through scenes from Living with Drones\nDiscuss a stitched! trauma-informed approach to storytelling\, including using calls-to-action as a method of democratic engagement and journalistic responsibility\nOffer tools\, resources\, and strategies for amplifying underreported narratives through independent journalism\, social media and advocacy efforts.\n\nThis event is co-presented by The People’s Forum and Visualizing Palestine. SUMMARY:Screening and Talkback - WE ARE UNARMED with Veterans For Peace
DESCRIPTION:On the 10th anniversary of the peaceful resistance to treaty violations and militarized force at Standing Rock\, join us for a screening of WE ARE UNARMED\, a documentary film by Gwendolen Cates that follows three Indigenous women who played central roles. The film bears witness to this historic event from September 2016 to the forced evacuation on February 23rd\, 2017. Media coverage glossed over historical and political context. At a critical moment in U.S. history\, the film encourages us to study the past to understand the present. A panel discussion will follow the film. \nPanelists: \nRoberto Mukaro Borrero is a citizen and kasike (chief) of the Guainía Taino Tribe of Borikén and the Virgin Islands. He has a distinguished and diverse background in policy & program development\, the arts\, and rights advocacy\, including a specialization on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. He retains over 25 years of experience actively engaging the United Nations system in thematic areas such as Sustainable Development and Climate Change\, among others. \nGwendolen Cates is an award-winning documentary filmmaker\, photographer\, and author\, whose films have been shown on PBS\, at film festivals\, colleges and universities\, museums\, and the UN. Her films include Water Flowing Together\, which chronicles the life of Navajo/Puerto Rican New York City Ballet principal ballet dancer Jock Soto (PBS Independent Lens 2008); The Good Mind (2016) about Onondaga Nation leaders fighting for return of stolen lands; We Are Unarmed (2020); and The Doctrine (2025) about the impact of the Doctrine of Discovery on Indigenous Peoples and the planet today.

DESCRIPTION:On September 17th\, Dr. Charisse Burden-Stelly and Derecka Purnell are joining the Community Church of New York as Community Conversation partners for a session we’re calling “Countering Counter-Revolution.” Conor Q. Foley\, Director of Community Engagement will facilitate a discussion about Anticommunism\, Anti-“Woke”\, and the Attack on Abolition. RSVP here to join! \nCommunity Conversations is a program presented by the Community Church of New York\, aiming to facilitate open dialogue with movement leaders and thinkers on justice issues that demand our engagement\, understanding\, and action. \nDr. Charisse Burden-Stelly is a critical Black Studies scholar of political theory\, political economy\, intellectual history\, and political and historical sociology who serves as Associate Professor of African American Studies at Wayne State University. She obtained her Ph.D.\, African Diaspora Studies\, University of California- Berkeley and her M.A.\, African American Studies\, University of California- Berkeley. She is the author of Black Scare/Red Scare: Theorizing Capitalist Racism in the United States and the co-author\, with Dr. Gerald Horne\, of W.E.B. Du Bois: A Life in American History. Co-editor\, with Dr. Jodi Dean\, of Organize\, Fight\, Win: Black Communist Women’s Political Writings and of Reproducing Domination: On the Caribbean and the Postcolonial State with Dr. Aaron Kamugisha and Dr. Percy Hintzen. \nDerecka Purnell is a writer\, organizer\, cultural worker\, movement lawyer\, and friend.  She is the author of Becoming Abolitionists: Police\, Protests\, and the Pursuit of Freedom . She is studying and building political homes where people can love\, study\, experiment\, and thrive together. She received her JD from Harvard Law School\, her BA from the University of Missouri- Kansas City\, and studied public policy and economics at the University of California- Berkeley as a Public Policy and International Affairs Law Fellow. Her writing has been published widely\, including inThe New York Magazine\, The New York Times\, The Atlantic\, Boston Review\, Teen Vogue\,  Harper’s Bazaar\, The Harvard Journal of African American Policy\,  and Cal Law Review. She has lectured\, studied\, and strategized on social movements across North America\, Africa\, Australia\, and Europe. \nDerecka and Dr. Charisse will be in conversation with Conor Q. Foley\, Director of Community Engagement at the Community Church and author of The Bible and Police Violence in the United States\, published by Routledge this May.

DESCRIPTION:PRINT-MAKING OPEN STUDIO w/ DANIEL + PETER + HAMZAH \nOne-day   |   11AM – 2PM   |   Saturday\, September 19 \nOpen studio is a space to develop a print-making project in community with other organizers\, artists\, and cultural workers. \nThese sessions are designed for those who have taken Screenprint 101 or Revolutionary Printmaking at The People’s Forum\, or who have experience with relief or screenprinting. \nEach session is drop-in and goals are defined by the participant. Basic tools and materials are available—including paper\, transparencies\, ink\, linoleum\, screens\, and emulsion. \nIf you would like the studio to print a transparency for your screenprint project\, please email the file to francesca.b@peoplesforum.org by noon on Thursday before the session with subject line ‘OPEN STUDIO PRINT’ and write the dimensions (inch by inch) in the body of the email. \nRegistration is required. Come to experiment\, come to get your hands dirty! \n__ \nDaniel Drennan ElAwar is an illustrator\, printmaker\, fiber artist\, and educator. His work\, based in a documentary genre\, focuses primarily on issues of displacement\, dispossession\, and disinheritance. His research and practice concerning decolonization and resistance led to the founding in 2009 of a Beirut-based artists’ collective\, ‎جمع اليد (Jamaa Al-Yad). He currently manages the studio and workshops for Frontline Arts in Branchburg\, NJ. \nOne of Many artists\, Peter and Hamzah\, create fashion\, art\, and music as a way to drive positive change in the world.
