Be sure to submit both the application and the assessment to get a registration link via email \nPortuguês Intermediário 2 is an advanced intermediate class\, designed by Natalia de Campos for The People’s Forum\, with a focus on deepening listening\, speaking and developing communication skills in Portuguese in a conversational style\, without translating into one’s native language\, to allow you to have more vocabulary\, composed verbal structures\, and more elaborate conversations with Portuguese native speakers.  \nWe will work with texts from Brazilian and other Portuguese-speaking revolutionary thinkers and writers\, such as Paulo Freire\, Carolina Maria de Jesus\, Conceição Evaristo\, and others. We look at both historic and contemporary political practices to deepen your understanding of Portuguese while learning about Portuguese-speaking people’s movements\, the history of Brazilian people\, its revolutionary struggles\, and other means of resistance. \nThis course has an advanced approach for people who already speak basic Portuguese \nWe will use visual materials\, music\, literature\, and conversation\, focusing on Brazilian Portuguese\, and also examine a few differences between Brazilian\, African\, South Asian and European Portuguese. Portuguese is arguably among the 9 or 10 most spoken languages in the world\, but only 5 percent of its speakers live in its original home Portugal. It is estimated that 270 million people speak Portuguese today\, amongst which nearly 254 million are native speakers. It is the second most spoken Romance language\, after Spanish. Brazil’s 213 million people is the largest Portuguese-speaking population in the world. \nAs a colonial language\, it suffered many transformations\, particular to each locale. It is nowadays also a result of cultural resistance of the indigenous and enslaved people during colonialism. It is spoken in the U.S particularly in the Northeast\, in California and in Florida\, where native Portuguese speakers\, who are immigrants from Africa\, South Asia\, Europe and Brazil have concentrated historically. In nearby regions\, it is more widely spoken in areas of Newark\, New Jersey; Astoria\, Queens; in the coastal regions of Connecticut\, and Massachusetts.  \nBackground:  Since the 16th century Brazilians started to incorporate dialects\, words and sounds into Portuguese\, particularly from the Tupi and Guarani indigenous linguistic branches that make up the majority of the pre-Columbian indigenous languages of Brazil’s current territory. With enslaved workers brought from Africa\, more heavily during the 17th\, 18th and 19th centuries\, many different languages and backgrounds were also influential. \nBrazilian Portuguese continued to evolve as the common language amongst all living in Brazil\, and the one permitted to be spoken by the colonizers. However\, new words referring to foods\, materials and relationships with no correlations in Europe\, started to influence Continental Portuguese\, even though the grammar and syntax structures remained the same.  \nRevolutionary literacy methods created for adults\, by the influential educator Paulo Freire in the 1960s\, author of the Pedagogy of the Oppressed\, finally started to prioritize local people’s needs and generate wider political consciousness about the role of language in political emancipation to the elite oppressors. It is still used to combat illiteracy and poverty\, and to help achieve freedom\, much beyond Brazil’s borders.

DESCRIPTION:Arabic for Social Justice\nAPPLY HERE: Registration Form \nAlgarabía Language Co-op is offering new Arabic courses at The People’s Forum to those who are interested in learning Arabic with a focus on topics of social justice\, cinema\, media\, and culture. \nThrough weekly social justice themes\, and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Arabic skills and critically engage with various cultural productions in Arabic\, including films\, TV series\, newsreels\, short stories\, and songs. \nThese courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in the U.S. and the Arab world. \nCourse Offerings\nAll classes run for 10 weeks. DESCRIPTION:Join the People’s Forum for an event to introduce Dr. Brian Kwoba’s award-winning book\, Hubert Harrison: Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism. He will be joined in conversation by Tajee Bounds to explore the many radicalisms of Hubert Harrison\, who emerges in the book as one of the most influential and neglected Afro-Caribbean revolutionaries in New York City’s history. \nAfter blazing a trail for people of color in the Socialist Party of America\, Hubert Harrison emerged as one of the most prominent Black freethinkers and free lovers of his generation. He practiced armed self-defense and called for an anti-capitalist Colored International in the face of European colonialism in Africa\, Asia\, Latin America\, and the Caribbean. Most spectacularly\, Harrison’s Liberty League of Negro Americans catalyzed the rise of Marcus Garvey and the largest international organization of African people in modern history. Because of his fearless radicalism\, however\, the full scope of Harrison’s revolutionary legacy has been erased from popular memory. Until now. \nUntil now\, Dr. Kwoba’s book has won the 2026 Frantz Fanon Outstanding Book Award from the Caribbean Philosophical Association and the 2026 Phillis Wheatley Book Award from the Sons and Daughters of the United States Middle Passage. According to Robin DG Kelley\, “Brian Kwoba has written a beautiful\, intellectual biography as radical and original as its subject.” \nDr. Kwoba is a professor of history and director of African and African American Studies at the University of Memphis. Over the past 22 years\, Dr. Kwoba has been an activist on issues including anti-imperialism\, immigrant workers’ rights\, climate justice\, decolonizing education\, Falastin\, and the movement for Black lives. Tajee Bounds is the membership and volunteer coordinator for the People’s Forum and a community organizer in New Jersey. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:PRINT-MAKING OPEN STUDIO w/ DANIEL + FRANCESCA \nAlternating Saturdays  |   11AM – 2PM   |   $20 \nOpen studio is a space to develop a print-making project in community with other organizers\, artists\, and cultural workers. \nThese sessions are designed for those who have taken Screen-print 101 or Revolutionary Print-making at The People’s Forum\, or who have experience with print-making. \nCome for one Saturday\, or return every other week! Each session is drop-in and goals are defined by the participant. \nBasic tools and materials are available—including ink\, linoleum\, paper\, transparencies\, screens\, and emulsion. \nSpring schedule: March 28 / April 11 / April 25 / May 9 / May 23 / June 6 / June 20 \nRegistration is required. Co-facilitated by Daniel Drennan ElAwar and Francesca Barr. \n__ \nDaniel Drennan ElAwar is an illustrator\, printmaker\, fiber artist\, and educator. His work\, based in a documentary genre\, focuses primarily on issues of displacement\, dispossession\, and disinheritance. His research and practice concerning decolonization and resistance led to the founding in 2009 of a Beirut-based artists’ collective\, ‎جمع اليد (Jamaa Al-Yad). He currently manages the studio and workshops for Frontline Arts in Branchburg\, NJ. \nFrancesca Barr is a working artist and writer from Massachusetts. She loves screenprint for the physical labor it demands\, and for its value in movement-making past\, present\, and future.

DESCRIPTION:FOR VENIDA\, FOR KALIEF Film & The People’s Forum Present : Dreaming Beyond Rikers\n\nTribeca Festival 2025 Official Selection for U.S. Documentary Competition\, FOR VENIDA\, FOR KALIEF debuts the poetry of Venida Brodnax Browder\, mother of Kalief Browder\, and weaves a lyrical and cinematic mosaic connecting past\, present\, and future while exploring the movement to transform Rikers Island- the world’s most notorious jail- into a renewable energy center. Full film synopsis below. \nPlease join us for a poetic and empowering afternoon at The People’s Forum! Following the film screening\, there will be a panel and organizing workshop featuring local advocates from the Campaign to Close Rikers\, Freedom Agenda\, the Jails Action Coalition\, HALT Solitary and more to help facilitate a deeper conversation about the current status of the complete plan to close Rikers Island Jail and organizing to push for its closure by the legally-mandated deadline of August 31\, 2027. We will also visualize and plan for the next phase of the closing plan that is also approved and legally-mandated – the creation of Renewable Rikers in its place. \nThe panel and workshop will be followed by poetry performances by featured artists TBD\, as well as an open mic. \nThe event is free and open to the public with an RSVP and a suggested donation. Light refreshments will be served. Space is limited; advance registration is required below. \n\nEVENTBRITE LINK  \nFILM SYNOPSIS\nFOR VENIDA\, FOR KALIEF (95 minutes) delves into the profound legacy of Kalief Browder\, who at age 16 was sent to New York’s notorious Rikers Island jail complex for allegedly stealing a backpack. After three years of solitary confinement\, he was released without charge\, but later committed suicide at the age of 22. At the heart of this narrative is his mother\, Venida Brodnax Browder\, who found solace in writing poetry before dying from broken heart syndrome. FOR VENIDA\, FOR KALIEF is a cinematic mosaic\, an immersive journey connecting past\, present\, and future that is balanced between contemporary verite and vivid poetic interludes and rare archival imagery that take us back to the untold story of the Citywide Jail Rebellion of 1970 led by the Black Panthers and Young Lords. Taking an unconventional and liminal approach\, the film explores how the carceral system is a vicious cycle\, and that an individual’s life – and afterlife – can expand exponentially to create societal change previously considered unattainable.

DESCRIPTION:COLLAGE MAKING FOR LIBERATION w/ ASHLEY LAGRANGE \nOne-day   |   6-8:30PM   |   Saturday\, June 6   |   Sliding Scale  \nJoin us for Collage Making For Liberation\, a one-day workshop w/ Queens-based therapist and artist Ashley Lagrange! \nIn these sessions you’ll learn how to create collage art as a medium for political agitation and propaganda and as a tool for self-reflection and expression. Participants will gather inspiration from collage artists who have created intentional Agitprop and then be provided with prompts and materials to create their own. \n__ \nAshley Marie Lagrange\, (They/Them) is a therapist\, coach\, and collage artist born\, raised and currently residing in Queens\, New York to a multigenerational household Dominican l household. Ashley works in the day as a politicized therapist and coach for the QTBIPOC population which stemmed from their lived experience with madness and grassroots peer support organizing. Ashley is also a Collage Artist\, having taught and facilitated various classes and workshop spaces on the analog art form. Ashley is a member of DegrowNYC and previously sat as their Propaganda Chair.
