Welcome to Spanish for Social Justice! \nAlgarabía Language Co-op is excited to announce that we are offering virtual Spanish classes this spring! \nAlgarabía Language Co-op offers Spanish for Social Justice courses in partnership with The People’s Forum. We offer classes at the beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced levels of fluency for those interested in topics related to social justice\, politics\, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working-class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. There is an emphasis on validating U.S. Spanish and other varieties of Spanish that are often considered “non-standard.” We actively include the use of “vos” as used in Central America.  \nAs part of Algarabía’s mission to make our courses accessible\, we offer sliding-scale rates and flexible payment plans. These are virtual classes\, facilitated by Kristen Suiter and Siena Rafter\, for people of all levels in their language study journey. \n  \nINTRO TO ASL – Apply Here  \nIn this class\, we will build your vocabulary in American Sign Language (get ready to be able to sign entire conversations!) and explore Deaf American culture and history. From learning the ABCs and how to introduce yourself to studying Deaf representation in media\, this offering will cover the basics of American Sign Language and American Deaf culture. \n\nMondays 5pm est – 630pm est\nMarch 23 – April 27\nSliding Scale ($150 – $300)\n\n  \nASL LEVEL 2 – Apply Here \nThis ASL Level 2 course is designed to continue your skill development in expressive signing. The focus of this course is to prepare students for non-verbal interaction and communication with members of the deaf community. You’ll learn useful vocabulary and you’ll be able to hold meaningful conversations about various topics. But it’s not all serious – you’ll also learn how to tell jokes\, use common expressions and sayings\, and relay anecdotes to your audience. DESCRIPTION:The artist must take sides. He must elect to fight for freedom or for slavery. I have made my choice. I had no alternative.” — Paul Robeson \nIn times of war and crisis\, when people are rising up\, when people are taking a stand\, when the stakes could not be higher– what is the responsibility of the artist? \nHistory points us to the answer. Culture is the heartbeat of our movements. It brings people into collective action\, sharpens our sense of our own power\, and makes a better future feel possible. But the ruling elites also use culture to flood our screens with art that makes the current crisis feel natural\, inevitable\, and permanent. Artists on the side of freedom have to fight back. Nina Simone\, Langston Hughes\, June Jordan\, Elizabeth Catlett\, and Paul Robeson all took a side. The muralists of the Chicano Movement took a side. Hip-hop artists and those speaking out on stages\, screens\, studio walls\, and the streets today take a side. Now\, we as artists have to consider what that looks like in today’s context. \nIn this course presented by Artists Against Apartheid & The People’s Forum\, we will study the role of the artist in the movement. We will discuss the responsibility of artists to struggle against the system that exploits\, alienates\, and pacifies and towards building a culture that inspires\, drives\, and sustains our collective struggle for liberation. Be sure to submit both the application and the assessment to get a registration link via email \nPortuguês Intermediário 2 is an advanced intermediate class\, designed by Natalia de Campos for The People’s Forum\, with a focus on deepening listening\, speaking and developing communication skills in Portuguese in a conversational style\, without translating into one’s native language\, to allow you to have more vocabulary\, composed verbal structures\, and more elaborate conversations with Portuguese native speakers.  \nWe will work with texts from Brazilian and other Portuguese-speaking revolutionary thinkers and writers\, such as Paulo Freire\, Carolina Maria de Jesus\, Conceição Evaristo\, and others. In nearby regions\, it is more widely spoken in areas of Newark\, New Jersey; Astoria\, Queens; in the coastal regions of Connecticut\, and Massachusetts.  \nBackground:  Since the 16th century Brazilians started to incorporate dialects\, words and sounds into Portuguese\, particularly from the Tupi and Guarani indigenous linguistic branches that make up the majority of the pre-Columbian indigenous languages of Brazil’s current territory. With enslaved workers brought from Africa\, more heavily during the 17th\, 18th and 19th centuries\, many different languages and backgrounds were also influential. \nBrazilian Portuguese continued to evolve as the common language amongst all living in Brazil\, and the one permitted to be spoken by the colonizers. However\, new words referring to foods\, materials and relationships with no correlations in Europe\, started to influence Continental Portuguese\, even though the grammar and syntax structures remained the same.  \nRevolutionary literacy methods created for adults\, by the influential educator Paulo Freire in the 1960s\, author of the Pedagogy of the Oppressed\, finally started to prioritize local people’s needs and generate wider political consciousness about the role of language in political emancipation to the elite oppressors. It is still used to combat illiteracy and poverty\, and to help achieve freedom\, much beyond Brazil’s borders.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Paul and Eslanda Robeson Cinema at The People’s Forum\, created in the spirit of their love of art\, film\, and revolution. \nAmong the many things he is known for; theoretician\, intellectualist\, agronomist\, anti-colonialist leader\, revolutionary….Amilcar Cabral is considered one of the greatest leaders of all time. As one of the leaders of the African Party For the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC)\, Cabral led the movement to free the two countries from Portuguese rule. Although Amilcar Cabral was assassinated in 1973\, Guinea-Bissau gained their independence in that year and Cape Verde gained their independence in 1975. This film “Honoring Amilcar” captures Amilcar Cabral’s influence and impact on several social justice involved Black people in Cape Verde and The United States. Several threads of Amilcar Cabral’s philosophies\, practices\, values and virtues are connected through the testimony of the interviewees. Several emerging themes are his focus on the importance of culture\, disciplined revolutionary practice and strategy\, class struggle\, African identity\, humanitarianism\, anti-colonialism-fascism-racism and the need for solidarity. Representing three generations\, the film features testimony from Fania E. The “ethno-communications” initiative to recruit students from Black\, Asian\, Chicano and Native American communities became a movement known as “LA Rebellion.” \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:THREE FILMS FROM QUEENS BY SETH FEIN \nSeth Fein presents three short films of diverse content as well as form that he produced in and (mainly) about Queens. A conversation with Seth follows screening of his films: \nSMALL KITCHENS (31′\, 2019\, 2023) observes the physical connections and social contrasts of kitchen work between a Nepali restaurant and a Mexican food cart\, each owned and operated by immigrant women\, on the Elmhurst-Jackson Heights border under the 7 train\, in Queens. Workers participated as camera operators contributing POV footage of their labor. Initially shot in 2019\, in the months prior to the coronavirus crisis\, this observational tone poem is now a time-capsule of this most global part of NYC before it became the global epicenter of Covid-19 mortality. \nTHE ACTOR IN HIS LABYRINTH (32′\, 2023) maps Sebastián Ospina’s journey from Colombian TV star to “nomadic” NYC theater actor\, observing how his interborough and interamerican travels and travails resonate with those of Simón Bolívar in the play Ospina wrote and performs about the South American Liberator’s final trek through Colombia\, two centuries earlier. \nDADDY’S BOYS (33:11\, 2025) maps the adjacent politics of Donald Trump and Andrew Cuomo through their adjacent boyhoods in Jamaica Estates and Holliswood\, Queens\, and their respective relationships with their dads\, Fred and Mario.
