We will read about and discuss a few of the most important social movements in Brazil. This course has a fast approach for people who already speak basic Portuguese. \nDuring the course we will use visual materials\, music\, literature\, and conversation\, focusing on Brazilian Portuguese\, and we will also examine a few more differences between Brazilian\, African\, South Asian and European/Continental Portuguese. The program will deepen grammar structures in practical ways\, and include writing and speaking exercises. We will engage with the history of Brazilian people\, its revolutionary struggles\, and other means of resistance. \nYou will learn about historical and contemporary contexts of the working classes and social movements in Brazil\, and other Portuguese-speaking countries. \n  \nBackground information: \nPortuguese is a language with roots in Portugal and also the official language spoken today in 10 countries: Brazil\, Mozambique\, Angola\, Portugal\, Guinea-Bissau\, East Timor\, Equatorial Guinea\, Macau\, Cape Verde\, and São Tomé and Príncipe. Portuguese is arguably among the 9 or 10 most spoken languages in the world\, but only 5 percent of its speakers live in its original home Portugal. It is estimated that 270 million people speak Portuguese today\, amongst which nearly 254 million are native\nspeakers. It is the second most spoken Romance language\, after Spanish. Brazil’s 211 million people is the largest Portuguese-speaking population in the world. \nAs a colonial language\, it suffered many transformations\, particular to each locale. It is nowadays also a result of cultural resistance of the indigenous and enslaved people during colonialism. It is spoken in the U.S particularly in the Northeast\, in California and in Florida\, where native Portuguese speakers\, who are immigrants from Africa\, South Asia\, Europe and Brazil have concentrated historically. SUMMARY:[SERIES] Hidden Histories of Rebellion in the United States
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nThe stories we tell\, and those we don’t\, have serious consequences for our reality and our future. \nThrough all means of communication\, the Trump administration and its billionaire backers are manufacturing a false narrative about the history\, people\, and current reality of the United States to justify their racist\, xenophobic\, patriarchal\, and colonial agenda for people in the US and across the world.  \nAs we approach the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States\, the Trump administration and its billionaire backers are using this moment to launch an all-out attack on history and truth\, intending to replace it with a false narrative that justifies their racist\, xenophobic\, patriarchal\, and colonial agenda for people in the US and across the world.   \nThey glorify the parts of history that serve their racist program today\, while censoring the histories of heroic resistance\, solidarity\, and multiracial unity that shaped the people and history of the United States. They persecute those who tell the truth about the horrors of slavery and the fight that abolished it. They erase the history of Jim Crow and dismiss the millions who rose up to dismantle legal apartheid in this country. The examples are in the thousands. \nThis is a blatant attempt to weaponize a distorted version of US history to make their extreme right-wing project appear natural\, popular\, and uncontested. But their story is based on lies. Not only is their agenda completely and massively unpopular\, their version of history is so manipulated that it is more fiction than fact.  \nIt is up to us to expose these lies. We must become the arbiters of truth\, and tell the stories of our people\, our heroes\, the millions who have fought oppression and exploitation and demanded a better world.  \nThis seminar series is part of reclaiming that history. We will uncover just a fraction of the hidden and mostly unknown people’s rebellions that have shaped the history of the United States. Through weekly social justice themes\, and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Arabic skills\, and critically engage with various cultural productions in Arabic\, including films\, TV series\, newsreels\, short stories\, and songs.  \nThese courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. SUMMARY:100 Years of BHM a Film Program by Daniel Simmons: Wilmington 10 — USA 10\,000 (1979)
DESCRIPTION:In October 1972\, nine Black men and one white woman were wrongfully convicted of arson and conspiracy and sentenced by the North Carolina state court to 282 collective years in prison. An international cause célèbre\, the so-called Wilmington 10 languished for nearly a decade in separate jails\, even as journalists and lawyers exposed criminal wrongdoing in the State’s case; religious leaders\, politicians\, and activists demanded their release and exoneration; and the Soviet Union brandished their photos as a symbol of American hypocrisy and racism. In his brilliant reckoning\, Gerima invokes the Wilmington Massacre of 1898 and the legacies of slavery and Jim Crow in lynchings\, poverty\, and segregation; in the shuttering of a successful Black high school and a subsequent boycott led by the Reverend Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr.; in street violence and riots instigated by white supremacists; and in the mysterious firebombing of a White-owned grocery store. \nGerima observes\, “Through photographs\, documentation of other cases\, knowledge of the vast number of Black males incurring severe sentences for rape and other unjust convictions\, the Hurricane Carters\, the George Jacksons\, the Ruchell Magees\, and other millions of nameless\, faceless political prisoners in the country’s system are all shown to be linked to the same struggle—all victims of racist and political oppression. DESCRIPTION:🚫🧊 Join us on Saturday\, February 28th from 11AM to 1PM for another ICE Out of NY Court Accompaniment Training! The volunteer training will cover basic rights when inateracting with ICE and other law enforcement and how to stay safe\, organized\, and effective before\, during\, and after accompaniment. \n🔗 RSVP now at the link in bio and get involved! \nℹ️ New York City\, home to one of the largest and most diverse immigrant populations in the country\, now leads the nation in ICE courthouse abductions. Due to the city’s robust networks of unions\, community organizations\, and immigrant-led groups\, it is also a key location to establish defense and solidarity that can set national precedents for sanctuary and collective protection. \n📝Become part of the volunteer network to support immigrants at court hearings and ICE/ISAP check-ins in New York City. This work responds to escalating federal enforcement targeting immigrant communities through raids\, detention\, and courthouse arrests. \n‼️ Volunteers accompany community members through these high-risk appointments to provide a calm\, supportive presence\, follow safety protocols\, and stay in contact with the coordination team. Volunteers should be U.S. citizens or non-citizens who understand the risks and have morning availability (usually 7:00–11:00 a.m.).
