We will read about and discuss a few of the most important social movements in Brazil. This course has a fast approach for people who already speak basic Portuguese. \nDuring the course we will use visual materials\, music\, literature\, and conversation\, focusing on Brazilian Portuguese\, and we will also examine a few more differences between Brazilian\, African\, South Asian and European/Continental Portuguese. The program will deepen grammar structures in practical ways\, and include writing and speaking exercises. We will engage with the history of Brazilian people\, its revolutionary struggles\, and other means of resistance. \nYou will learn about historical and contemporary contexts of the working classes and social movements in Brazil\, and other Portuguese-speaking countries. \n  \nBackground information: \nPortuguese is a language with roots in Portugal and also the official language spoken today in 10 countries: Brazil\, Mozambique\, Angola\, Portugal\, Guinea-Bissau\, East Timor\, Equatorial Guinea\, Macau\, Cape Verde\, and São Tomé and Príncipe. Portuguese is arguably among the 9 or 10 most spoken languages in the world\, but only 5 percent of its speakers live in its original home Portugal. It is estimated that 270 million people speak Portuguese today\, amongst which nearly 254 million are native\nspeakers. It is the second most spoken Romance language\, after Spanish. Brazil’s 211 million people is the largest Portuguese-speaking population in the world. \nAs a colonial language\, it suffered many transformations\, particular to each locale. It is nowadays also a result of cultural resistance of the indigenous and enslaved people during colonialism. It is spoken in the U.S particularly in the Northeast\, in California and in Florida\, where native Portuguese speakers\, who are immigrants from Africa\, South Asia\, Europe and Brazil have concentrated historically. SUMMARY:[SERIES] Hidden Histories of Rebellion in the United States
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nThe stories we tell\, and those we don’t\, have serious consequences for our reality and our future. \nThrough all means of communication\, the Trump administration and its billionaire backers are manufacturing a false narrative about the history\, people\, and current reality of the United States to justify their racist\, xenophobic\, patriarchal\, and colonial agenda for people in the US and across the world.  \nAs we approach the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States\, the Trump administration and its billionaire backers are using this moment to launch an all-out attack on history and truth\, intending to replace it with a false narrative that justifies their racist\, xenophobic\, patriarchal\, and colonial agenda for people in the US and across the world.   \nThey glorify the parts of history that serve their racist program today\, while censoring the histories of heroic resistance\, solidarity\, and multiracial unity that shaped the people and history of the United States. They persecute those who tell the truth about the horrors of slavery and the fight that abolished it. They erase the history of Jim Crow and dismiss the millions who rose up to dismantle legal apartheid in this country. The examples are in the thousands. \nThis is a blatant attempt to weaponize a distorted version of US history to make their extreme right-wing project appear natural\, popular\, and uncontested. But their story is based on lies. Not only is their agenda completely and massively unpopular\, their version of history is so manipulated that it is more fiction than fact.  \nIt is up to us to expose these lies. We must become the arbiters of truth\, and tell the stories of our people\, our heroes\, the millions who have fought oppression and exploitation and demanded a better world.  \nThis seminar series is part of reclaiming that history. We will uncover just a fraction of the hidden and mostly unknown people’s rebellions that have shaped the history of the United States. Through weekly social justice themes\, and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Arabic skills\, and critically engage with various cultural productions in Arabic\, including films\, TV series\, newsreels\, short stories\, and songs.  \nThese courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. DESCRIPTION:A live panel on protest\, repression\, and the future of resistance in the U.S. What are the limits\, and what comes next?\n\n\n\nAkin Olla\, Ben Case\, Heba Gowayed\, and Suchitra Vijayan come together for an urgent public conversation about resistance\, repression\, and what this moment in the United States is exposing about the possibilities of mass action. \nIn the aftermath of the violent events in Minneapolis\, we ask: what are the limits of American revolt\, and what does it actually take to build durable\, collective power when public life is increasingly structured to make meaningful resistance hard to sustain? \nThis conversation traces how dissent is often diluted through the commodification of protest\, the gentrification of dissent\, the professionalisation of politics\, and the steady narrowing of collective life. At the same time\, we must recognise a longer lineage of revolt in the U.S. \nRSVP \n\n

DESCRIPTION:RELIEF PRINT-MAKING OPEN STUDIO w/ DANIEL DRENNAN ELAWAR\nOpen studio is a drop-in space for print-makers who have previously taken the Revolutionary Print-Making course\, or who have experience with the medium. Print-makers are welcome to bring their work at any stage of development and receive feedback on where they are in their process as well as assistance in completing a print run. \nA printing station will be set up for test prints and print runs. Some tools\, ink\, and linoleum will be available; print-makers will be expected to bring their own paper or fabric for printing. \n4 sessions  •  Saturdays\, 10:30AM – 1:30PM  •  January 24\, February 7 + 21\, March 7  •  Cost per Session: $15\n__ \nDaniel Drennan ElAwar is an illustrator\, printmaker\, fiber artist\, and educator. His work\, based in a documentary genre\, focuses primarily on issues of displacement\, dispossession\, and disinheritance. His research and practice concerning decolonization and resistance led to the founding in 2009 of a Beirut-based artists’ collective\, ‎جمع اليد (Jamaa Al-Yad). He currently manages the studio and workshops for Frontline Arts in Branchburg\, NJ. \n

We’ll be ringing in this Black & Red Books Day with a conversation with Manolo De Los Santos & Rosemari Mealy on the struggle for Black liberation and socialism\, and celebrating revolutionary culture with a performance by Desiree Jaha and screenprinting in the evening! \nEach year\, The People’s Forum and thousands across the world commemorate Red Books Day\, an international celebration of radical literature and political education\, observed on or around February 21—the publication date of The Communist Manifesto. The day honors revolutionary texts that have inspired organizing and people’s movements around the world. \nIn 2026\, we proudly celebrate Red Books Day alongside the 100th anniversary of Black History Month\, bringing together two traditions of resistance and struggle. This year’s Black & Red Books Day centers Black revolutionaries and the radical writings that continue to shape global liberation movements. \n
