This course will give you a solid base and allow you to start communicating with Portuguese native speakers. The instructor will use visual materials\, music\, and conversation between participants during the learning process\, focusing on her native Brazilian Portuguese\, and also examine some differences between Brazilian\, African\, South Asian and Continental (European) Portuguese. \nThe program will introduce grammar structures in practical ways\, and some writing exercises. The course runs weekly\, with 2 hours on Zoom\, and an extra hour of required individual practice exercises. With enslaved workers brought from Africa\, more heavily during the 17th\, 18th and 19th centuries\, many different languages and backgrounds were also influential. Brazilian Portuguese continued to evolve as the common language amongst all living in Brazil\, and the one permitted to be spoken by the colonizers. However\, new words referring to foods\, materials and relationships with no correlations in Europe\, started to influence Continental Portuguese\, even though the grammar and syntax structures remained the same. \nRevolutionary literacy methods created for adults\, by the influential educator Paulo Freire in the 1960s\, author of the Pedagogy of the Oppressed\, finally started to prioritize local people’s needs and generate wider political consciousness about the role of language in political emancipation to the elite oppressors. It is still used to combat illiteracy and poverty\, and to help achieve freedom\, much beyond Brazil’s borders.

DESCRIPTION:“UNDERSTANDING ZIONISM”   \nClass 1 – Origins of Zionism \nThis session will outline the emergence of Zionism as a reactionary\, colonial movement and ideology. Participants will learn the conditions\, in both Palestine and Europe\, through which Zionism emerged\, the political orientation and class character of the early Zionist movement\, its organizational development\, and the alliances it built with European imperialism and fascism. Through this session\, participants will explore some of the founding myths of Zionism as well as its defining characteristics to understand why genocide and ethnic cleansing are not aberrations from the logic of Zionism\, but a key part of it that has manifested in different ways over time.

SUMMARY:[COURSE] Understanding Zionism: A 6-Part Study for the Palestine Movement
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nIn 1948\, Zionist terror forces expelled 750\,000 Palestinians from their homes\, carrying out unspeakable massacres in what would be called the nakba. The nakba – or catastrophe – has never ended. Over the past 17 months we have witnessed the US and Israel wage a genocidal war on Gaza. Such crimes against the Palestinian people\, now and over the past 10 decades\, have been carried out in the name of Zionism: the foundational and guiding ideology of the State of Israel.  \nThe world has woken up to the brutal realities of Zionism\, understanding it to be a project that kills children\, bombs hospitals\, tortures prisoners\, occupies land\, assassinates journalists – a project that seeks to destroy the Palestinian people and those who stand with them. Realizing its condemnation in the eyes of the global majority\, Israel has designated $150 million of its 2025 budget to propaganda efforts\, in an attempt to reshape international public opinion by concealing Zionism’ genocidal and colonial nature on the world stage.  \nIn the midst of this battle of ideas\, we present the course “Understanding Zionism: A 6-Part Study for the Palestine Movement.” It is critical that we equip ourselves with a precise understanding of Zionism –  its history\, tendencies\, foundations\, aspirations\, and contradictions. Like all struggles for liberation\, we must understand the adversary. The movement for Palestinian liberation has grown and blossomed and public opinion across the world has dramatically shifted in favor of the Palestinian cause. As the genocide is intensifying and threatening to create a second nakba in Gaza\, we now more than ever need to deepen our understanding of the Zionist project and strengthen our engagement in the Palestinian cause.  \nOver the course of 6 sessions\, participants will deepen their comprehension of Zionism with the aim of expanding their engagement in the movement for Palestinian liberation. Together\, the course provides answers to the following questions: What is the history\, origins\, and foundational principles of Zionism? How have Palestinian revolutionaries understood Zionism? How and why did the “special relationship” between Israel and the US emerge? How has Zionism advanced right-wing forces in partnership with the US? What is the path forward for the global movement for Palestine today?  \nREGISTER HERE \nWHO \nEveryone from all contexts\, backgrounds\, and identities is welcome to register.  Whether you’re involved in the Palestine movement or seeking to deepen your knowledge and get involved\, this course is for you. If you are involved in an organization\, consider sharing the course with other members and taking it together. The instructors include organizers with the Palestinian Youth Movement\, the People’s Forum\, and other popular educators who have been deeply embedded in the Palestinian struggle.  \nThis course is free and open to organizers and people who stand with the Palestinian struggle across the U.S. and world. SUMMARY:Understanding Zionism: Class 2 Breaking the Iron Wall: How Have Palestinian Revolutionaries Understood Zionism?
DESCRIPTION:“UNDERSTANDING ZIONISM” \nClass 2 -Breaking the Iron Wall: How Have Palestinian Revolutionaries Understood Zionism? \nIn 1923\, Ze’ev Jabotinsky (born Vladimir Jabotinsky)—genocidal forefather of the ruling Likud party and founder of the Betar Zionist Youth Movement—wrote that the Palestinian people would continue to resist the Zionist colonial project until “not a single breach is visible in the iron wall.” The continued resistance against the iron wall of  Zionist military\, political\, and ideological power\, proves that breaches remain. Palestinian revolutionaries have long viewed the study of Zionism as necessary for widening these breaches and defeating Zionism\, the project that usurps their land.  In this session\, we will study the works of two such revolutionaries\, Ghassan Kanafani and Walid Daqqa\, to understand the following questions: how did Zionism marshall tremendous amounts of support despite openly stating its racist and genocidal intentions in Palestine? Under what historical conditions did Zionist propaganda emerge\, and how does it function?  What strategies does Zionism use to undermine Palestinian resistance? Why is it important for the Palestine movement to continue to study Zionism?  Through studying the answers of Palestinian revolutionaries on these questions\, we will develop an analysis on Zionism capable of guiding political action against it.  \n
