DESCRIPTION:The People’s Forum is convening a recurring online space to hear and discuss current analysis and reports from leaders of people’s movements and organizations in the US and across the world. \nWe know that the COVID-19 crisis only exacerbates the existing crises and contradictions that define life under capitalism and imperialism. How do those who are without shelter\, or living in precarious shelters\, practice precautionary measures during a pandemic? What can we learn from the experiences and leadership of organizations of the poor and dispossessed who have been fighting not just against the conditions of this current crisis\, but against the permanent crisis of capitalism? We will host a powerful exchange between two organizations who fight for the basic right of human dignity —Abahlali baseMjondolo (Shack Dwellers) Movement in South Africa\, and the National Union of the Homeless in the United States.   \nRSVP below and ​join us via zoom!​

Through weekly social justice themes\, and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Arabic skills\, and critically engage with various Arabic cultural productions\, including films\, TV series\, newsreels\, and short stories. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in the U.S. and the Arab world. \nConversational Beginner – Arabic Culture Club \nInstructor: Karim Elhaies \nTo register\, APPLY HERE \nReviews topics covered in Arabic 1 & 2 courses. DESCRIPTION:*TPF is closed from March 10 – April 20* \nTuesdays 6pm-9pm\, February 11 to April 14\, 30 hours of instruction \nWhether you are of Filipino heritage\, a student of languages\, a researcher\, tourist\, or just someone interested in learning a new language\, this class is for you. Over the course of the next few weeks\, we will be experiencing the first steps into learning Pilipino. Together\, we will explore what it means to learn about a language of a nation forged in the flames of an anti-colonial revolution and continues to develop as a people in an ongoing national-democratic struggle. Through this preliminary journey we hope to also learn about the Filipino people\, the history of the language itself\, common expressions and modes of communication\, and other ways that the language comes to life in the hearts\, minds\, and will of Filipinos—including in diaspora. \nThis course is offered on a sliding scale of $150-$300 for 30 hours of instruction.

DESCRIPTION:*TPF is closed from March 10 – April 20* \nSamuel Stein’s public talk: “Labor\, Land Use\, and Luxury City.”\n\nNew York is a painfully expensive city. The cost of living has risen at a ferocious clip\, leaving many residents rent-burdened\, displaced\, or even homeless. At the same time\, however\, New York remains a union town\, with higher rates of unionization than much of the rest of the country and a culture of neighborhood-level organizing anchored by strong non-profit organizations.\n\n\nHow do these two features of New York City life coincide and collide? Why have many New York City unions and non-profits at various times supported land use changes that intensify luxury development in working-class neighborhoods? What is labor’s role in what Stein calls “the real estate state?” This talk will draw from recently conducted research to describe the structural factors that shape union and non-profit planning politics in New York City\, the historical echoes and antecedents that frame the current political moment\, and the theoretical frameworks that clarify how labor\, capital\, and the state co-produce urban space.\n\n\nBio: Samuel Stein is a geography PhD candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center. His work focuses on the politics of urban planning\, with an emphasis on housing\, labor\, real estate\, and gentrification in New York City. In 2019\, Verso published his first book\, Capital City: Gentrification and the Real Estate State.\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:*TPF is closed from March 10 – April 20* \nThursdays 6-9pm\, February 20 to April 23\, 30 hours of instruction \nWelcome to this intermediate Filipino Language Course. This course is intended for those who both feel ready and can demonstrate a basic proficiency in Filipino/Pilipino\, or have a basic understanding of Tagalog upon which the national language is based. This course is largely a continuation of lessons learned from the basic course in this series\, Makibaka: Fighting Back in Pilipino 1. Whether you are of Filipino heritage\, a student of languages\, a researcher\, tourist\, or just someone interested in learning a new language\, this class is for you. Together\, we will explore what it means to learn about the language of a nation forged in the flames of an anti-colonial revolution and continues to develop as a people in an ongoing national-democratic struggle. Through this course\, we will focus on the practical and applied aspects of the Filipino language as well as study the historical\, cultural\, and political context that the Filipino people live in–both at home and abroad. As such\, this course will have some measure of technical terminology that will be kept to a minimum\, emphasizing instead the practical and day-to-day aspects of its use. Note\, this course will be much more political than many other language courses.
