Through weekly social justice themes\, and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Arabic skills\, and critically engage with various Arabic cultural productions\, including films\, TV series\, newsreels\, and short stories. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in the U.S. and the Arab world. \nConversational Beginner – Arabic Culture Club \nInstructor: Karim Elhaies \nTo register\, APPLY HERE \nReviews topics covered in Arabic 1 & 2 courses. DESCRIPTION:*The People’s Forum is temporarily closed from March 10 – April 20* \nTuesdays 6pm-9pm\, February 11 to April 14\, 30 hours of instruction \nWhether you are of Filipino heritage\, a student of languages\, a researcher\, tourist\, or just someone interested in learning a new language\, this class is for you. Over the course of the next few weeks\, we will be experiencing the first steps into learning Pilipino. Together\, we will explore what it means to learn about a language of a nation forged in the flames of an anti-colonial revolution and continues to develop as a people in an ongoing national-democratic struggle. Through this preliminary journey we hope to also learn about the Filipino people\, the history of the language itself\, common expressions and modes of communication\, and other ways that the language comes to life in the hearts\, minds\, and will of Filipinos—including in diaspora. \nThis course is offered on a sliding scale of $150-$300 for 30 hours of instruction.

SUMMARY:Invention of the White Race
DESCRIPTION:*The People’s Forum is temporarily closed from March 10 – April 20* \nThe Invention of the White Race Volumes I & II\, Theodore W.  Allen’s historical materialist analysis of racial slavery\, documents how the plantation elite put in place this system of social control following Bacon’s Rebellion of 1676.  In the final stage of this uprising\, an army of European and African chattel bond laborers burned Jamestown to the ground and temporarily drove Governor Berkeley into exile across the Chesapeake Bay.   The terrified planter bourgeoisie\, in a deliberate response to this display of labor solidarity\, enacted a series of laws and practices in the late 17th and early 18th centuries which implanted a system of ‘white’ racial privileges that enabled the imposition of racial slavery and white male supremacy.  \nThe Revolutions Study Group (started at the Brecht Forum) has met since 2009. The groups has recently completed a year-long study of W.E.B. Dubois’ Black Reconstruction. Participants have come and gone\, however the group has held together\, studying in depth a wide range of history including the French Revolution\, the Russian Revolutions of 1905 and 1917\, the Mau-Mau Revolt in Kenya\, the Haitian Revolution\, the 1848 European Revolutions\, the May 68 movement in France and the Hot Autumn of Italy and much more. \nFees are sliding scale. no one is turned away for inability to pay. \nTickets available here.

We will send Zoom info to all registered participants\, please RSVP below! \nTricontinental: Institute for Social Research is an international\, movement-driven institution focused on stimulating intellectual debate that serves people’s aspirations. Every month\, they produce a brief dossier reflecting on a current event with an anti-imperialist analysis. We are holding space every month to discuss and debate the latest dossier. \nThis month\, we are reading Dossier No. 26: Fanon: The Brightness of Metal.  Joining us to guide this  discussion is Professor Anthony Alessandrini.  \nThis dossier offers a sparkling introduction to Fanon’s life and work\, stressing the contemporary political traction of his radical humanism\, and noting that his work carries an ‘irrepressible openness to the universal’ and an axiomatic commitment to ‘recognize the open door of every consciousness’. It examines\, in particular\, Fanon’s contribution as a theorist of praxis committed to move beyond the ontological and spatial ordering of oppression and undertake a form of insurgent and democratic praxis in which ‘a mutual current of enlightenment and enrichment’ is developed between protagonists from different social locations. \nRead the dossier here!

This course is intended for those who both feel ready and can demonstrate a basic proficiency in Filipino/Pilipino\, or have a basic understanding of Tagalog upon which the national language is based. This course is largely a continuation of lessons learned from the basic course in this series\, Makibaka: Fighting Back in Pilipino 1. Whether you are of Filipino heritage\, a student of languages\, a researcher\, tourist\, or just someone interested in learning a new language\, this class is for you. Together\, we will explore what it means to learn about the language of a nation forged in the flames of an anti-colonial revolution and continues to develop as a people in an ongoing national-democratic struggle. Through this course\, we will focus on the practical and applied aspects of the Filipino language as well as study the historical\, cultural\, and political context that the Filipino people live in–both at home and abroad. As such\, this course will have some measure of technical terminology that will be kept to a minimum\, emphasizing instead the practical and day-to-day aspects of its use. Note\, this course will be much more political than many other language courses. DESCRIPTION:The People’s Forum is convening a recurring online space to hear and discuss current analysis and reports from leaders of people’s movements and organizations in the US and across the world. \nAs the spread of COVID-19 exposes the dysfunction and illegitimacy of capitalist and imperialist system\, we need to maintain an internationalist and working class analysis. This panel will bring together leaders\, thinkers\, and organizers in the struggle for the human right of healthcare\, against xenophobia\, and against imperialism to help us understand the COVID-19 crisis in the current moment. \nSpeakers include Nijmie Dzurinko\, Ben Wilkins\, Shany Ebadi\, Sheila Xiao\, and members of the Qiao Collective \nNijmie Dzurinko is co-founder and co-coordinator of Put People First! PA\, a grassroots human rights organization in Pennsylvania waging a campaign for Healthcare as a Human Right for all. She is also co-chair of the PA Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival and a member of the National Steering Committee. \nBen Wilkins is a labor organizer based in North Carolina\, and a member of the Steering Committee of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. \nShany Ebadi is a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation with years of political and community organizing experience\, coordinating advocacy campaigns for immigrant rights\, education\, and women’s empowerment at local and state levels. As an Iranian immigrant\, she is actively dedicated to building a powerful anti-war movement to stop the U.S. war machine and end military occupations around the world. As a labor organizer\, she is currently working closely with gig workers and childcare providers as they fight for crucial benefits and essential services like health insurance and paid sick leave during the COVID-19 global crisis. \nSheila Xiao is an organizer with the ANSWER Coalition Los Angeles\, daughter of Chinese immigrants and a public education worker \nQiao (pronouned “chee-ow”) is a collective of Chinese leftists living in the diaspora. We aim to challenge U.S. aggression towards the People’s Republic of China and serve as a bridge between the U.S. left\, particularly the Chinese diaspora left\, and China’s rich Marxist\, anti-imperialist historical and contemporary political work and thought.  \nRSVP below and join us online via Zoom!

Our goals are 1) to increase local language justice capacity among grassroots groups and community spaces; 2) to provide participants with useful work skills they can continue to develop; and 3) to introduce a social justice framework to understand the role of interpreters and translators in creating participatory and inclusive community spaces. \nSpanish bilinguals are folks who grew up with Spanish being spoken at home or in their home community but have been systematically denied access to bilingual education. \nCOMMUNITY INTERPRETING 101 \nINSTRUCTOR: ALDO ULISSES RESÉNDIZ RAMÍREZ \nTo register APPLY HERE \n Covers interpreter role and ethics; simultaneous and consecutive modes of interpretation; use of interpretation equipment; overview of medical and legal interpreting with focus on social justice and grassroots community settings; focus is on oral fluency; explores topics of identity\, healing of language-based trauma\, and overcoming affective barriers to Spanish interpreting; expands vocabulary and idiomatic expressions; focus is on colloquial Spanish and differences among varieties; explores the use of inclusive\, gender-neutral and anti-racist language; hands-on interpreting practice; participants will be given the opportunity to interpret at a community event. \nSaturdays\, February 15th – May 23rd\, 2020\, 10am-1pm (3hrs/week; 45 hrs.) \n\nEach session can hold up to 20 participants.\nCourses are free of charge.\nAll course materials will be provided for free.\nThis program prioritizes working class\, racialized folks of Indigenous and African descent\, LGB Queer & Trans folx\, youth and senior citizens.\nPriority is given to working class local residents in the Chelsea and Hudson Yards area who are also eligible to receive a weekly participation stipend.\n\nTo register APPLY HERE

DESCRIPTION:*The People’s Forum is temporarily closed from March 10 – April 20* \nCapital\, Volume III\, The Process of Capitalist Production as a Whole\, completes Marx’s task of moving from the imaginary concrete—the researcher and scientist analyzing the appearances we see in everyday life such as in the Grundrisse\, to the abstract concrete. The results of the analytic study of the phenomenon that has revealed the social/natural content of that phenomenon (Volumes I and II)\, to the real concrete—how this content is expressed in everyday life through the mechanisms by which the actors determine their actions and appropriate wealth (Volume III). The study of Volume III is essential to understanding the complex dynamics at work in the present realities we are facing and how these realities are the necessary results of the inner logic of capital. \nThe CAPITAL STUDIES GROUP has been meeting on Saturdays for more than two years. We are a group of workers\, students\, activists and teachers who have dedicated themselves to a chronological reading of all three volumes of Marx’s Capital.
