DESCRIPTION:PRINT-MAKING OPEN STUDIO w/ DANIEL + PETER + HAMZAH \nOne-day   |   11AM – 2PM   |   Saturday\, September 19 \nOpen studio is a space to develop a print-making project in community with other organizers\, artists\, and cultural workers. \nThese sessions are designed for those who have taken Screenprint 101 or Revolutionary Printmaking at The People’s Forum\, or who have experience with relief or screenprinting. \nEach session is drop-in and goals are defined by the participant. Basic tools and materials are available—including paper\, transparencies\, ink\, linoleum\, screens\, and emulsion. \nIf you would like the studio to print a transparency for your screenprint project\, please email the file to francesca.b@peoplesforum.org by noon on Thursday before the session with subject line ‘OPEN STUDIO PRINT’ and write the dimensions (inch by inch) in the body of the email. \nRegistration is required. Come to experiment\, come to get your hands dirty! \n__ \nDaniel Drennan ElAwar is an illustrator\, printmaker\, fiber artist\, and educator. His work\, based in a documentary genre\, focuses primarily on issues of displacement\, dispossession\, and disinheritance. His research and practice concerning decolonization and resistance led to the founding in 2009 of a Beirut-based artists’ collective\, ‎جمع اليد (Jamaa Al-Yad). He currently manages the studio and workshops for Frontline Arts in Branchburg\, NJ. \nOne of Many artists\, Peter and Hamzah\, create fashion\, art\, and music as a way to drive positive change in the world. DESCRIPTION:THREADS OF PALESTINE: AN INTRODUCTION TO TATREEZ w/ ABEER KHADER \nOne-day  |  5:30 – 8:30PM  | Thursday\, September 24  |  Sliding scale \nJoin Jordanian architect\, designer\, and cultural researcher Abeer Khader for a hands-on introduction to Tatreez\, the traditional Palestinian art of counted-thread embroidery. More than a decorative practice\, Tatreez is a visual language through which generations of Palestinian women have preserved memory\, place\, identity\, and collective history. \nDesigned for complete beginners as well as participants with prior embroidery experience\, this three-hour workshop introduces the cultural significance of Tatreez\, the materials and techniques used in counted-thread embroidery\, and the process of reading and stitching a gridded motif. Participants will work with Aida fabric and DMC pearl cotton\, learn foundational stitches and finishing methods\, and create an individual 4 × 4 inch embroidered artwork. Each finished piece will be placed in a small wooden frame to take home. \nAll materials will be provided. No previous embroidery experience is required. \n__ \nAbeer Khader is a Jordanian-Palestinian embroiderer\, architect\, fashion designer\, cultural researcher\, and founder of Abeer Khader Studio. Drawing on her Jordanian-Palestinian cultural heritage\, her interdisciplinary practice brings together embroidery\, design\, heritage\, and community-based learning\, with a particular focus on Palestinian and Jordanian embroidery traditions. Through her studio and embroidery workshop\, she develops contemporary work rooted in cultural memory while supporting women artisans and creating opportunities for skills development and economic participation. Khader has facilitated embroidery workshops for universities\, cultural institutions\, local communities\, and refugee communities across Jordan. She also writes on architecture\, fashion\, identity\, and cultural heritage for independent Arab media platforms. Her teaching approach combines historical context\, thoughtful design\, and accessible hands-on instruction\, welcoming participants of all experience levels.

SUMMARY:Songs in the Key of Life at 50 Symposium
DESCRIPTION:To mark the 50th anniversary of Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life\, the Center for the Study of Social Difference (CSSD) at Columbia University is organizing a full-day symposium and accompanying concert. \nHeld in partnership with The People’s Forum\, the symposium and accompanying concert will reflect on the groundbreaking album’s insights into life in the wake of civil rights and decolonial movements across the African world\, and on the legacies of Wonder’s hopeful vision of a future grounded in love and shared humanity. They will kick off a yearlong series of public events and study sessions organized by CSSD that respond to the U.S. semiquincentennial and offer a critical counternarrative to officially sanctioned accounts of the past by focusing on works with alternative anniversaries which illuminate the experiences of minoritized communities.\n\nThe symposium features four panels\, each focusing on one side of Wonder’s four-sided album. Panels will bring together scholars and musicians for conversations that incorporate close listening and improvisational demonstrations. Themes broached in discussions will range from urban Black and brown impoverishment and jazz as a form of Black resistance to Black familial love and Global South solidarities. Panelists include Marcus J. Moore\, LaFrae Sci\, Samora Pinderhughes\, Naomi Extra\, Naima Cochrane\, Immanuel Wilkins\, Toshi Reagon\, and Shana L. Redmond. The symposium will end with a jam session building off of the album’s bonus tracks\, led by Dr. Guthrie Ramsey’s Musiqology\, and a reception.  \nTaking place at The People’s Forum\, the symposium\, which is co-sponsored by the Center for Jazz Studies\, is free and open for all to attend. Register here. \n\nFollowing the symposium\, CSSD is proud to co-present\, along with Pique-nique\, Boom Collective and The Radio in the Orchard (TRiO)\, a concert featuring musician Elliott Skinner at The Pocket Jazz Club. Organized as part of Pique-nique’s “Take Two” series\, the concert will include a listening session of Wonder’s album followed by a reinterpretation by Skinner. Blending soul\, blues\, folk\, and rock\, singer\, songwriter\, and multi-instrumentalist Elliott Skinner creates music that combines atmospheric vocals and rich instrumentation with an emphasis on personal storytelling. His work draws from the Black Radical Music Tradition\, a lineage of Black artists who have used music to explore identity\, confront social realities\, and imagine new possibilities for freedom. DESCRIPTION:EMBROIDERY AS MEMORY w/ NICOLE MONTGOMERY \nOne-day   |   6:00 – 8:30PM   |   Wednesday\, September 30   |   Sliding scale  \nThis embroidery workshop is designed for participants to build an understanding of basic stitches while exploring the importance of hand-sewing in history. After a technical demonstration\, the session will focus on stitchmaking as a form of storytelling. Participants are invited to embroider an image from memory\, drawing\, printed photograph\, or from the stencils provided. The workshop will culminate with learning how to mount your stitched images onto a textile of your choice. \nParticipants are welcome to bring photographs or sketches of their own to use as personal stencils. Examples: doors\, profile of a face\, flower. \nAll materials will be provided\, including the option to stitch on a tote or patch. \n__ \nNicole\, a native of Alexandria\, Virginia has been sewing since she was 12 years old. She made both of her high school prom dresses\, both being original and adapted designs. She studied fashion merchandising in college and went on to work as a visual merchandising coordinator and stylist for 10 years in home furnishings and fashion apparel. Once given the opportunity to follow her dreams in 2020\, has been working in the costume/wardrobe industry in NYC for the last 3 years and has worked on and off Broadway from American Ballet Theatre to &Juliet at The Stephen Sondheim Theater. The Bed Stuy Brooklyn neighborhood is where the heart of her work has begun to flourish. She teaches and volunteers with local non-profit organization Black Girls Sew\, where mentor and founder/creator\, Hekima Hapa leads classes and students through cut n sew fashion projects and field trips to experience and learn from the world around them.

DESCRIPTION:Arabic for Social Justice\nAPPLY HERE: Registration Form \nAlgarabía Language Co-op is offering new Arabic courses at The People’s Forum to those who are interested in learning Arabic with a focus on topics of social justice\, cinema\, media\, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes\, and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Arabic skills and critically engage with various cultural productions in Arabic\, including films\, TV series\, newsreels\, short stories\, and songs. \nThese courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in the U.S. and the Arab world. \nCourse Offerings\nAll courses run for 10 weeks. Total tuition for each complete 10-week course is $300–$400 on a sliding scale\, or $500 when paid through a work or professional-development stipend. \nBeginner I (in-person and virtual options)\nThis course introduces students with no prior experience to the Arabic alphabet and the basics of reading\, writing\, pronunciation\, and sentence structure. We offer classes at the beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced levels of fluency for those interested in topics related to social justice\, politics\, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working-class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills.
