DESCRIPTION:EMBROIDERY AS MEMORY w/ NICOLE MONTGOMERY \nOne-day   |   5:30 – 8:30PM   |   Thursday\, July 30   |   Sliding scale  \nThis embroidery workshop is designed for participants to build an understanding of basic stitches while exploring the importance of hand-sewing in history. After a technical demonstration\, the session will focus on stitchmaking as a form of storytelling. Participants are invited to embroider an image from memory\, drawing\, printed photograph\, or from the stencils provided. The workshop will culminate with learning how to mount your stitched images onto a textile of your choice. \nParticipants are welcome to bring photographs or sketches of their own to use as personal stencils. Examples: doors\, profile of a face\, flower. \nAll materials will be provided\, including the option to stitch on a tote or patch. \n__ \nNicole\, a native of Alexandria\, Virginia has been sewing since she was 12 years old. She made both of her high school prom dresses\, both being original and adapted designs. She studied fashion merchandising in college and went on to work as a visual merchandising coordinator and stylist for 10 years in home furnishings and fashion apparel. Once given the opportunity to follow her dreams in 2020\, has been working in the costume/wardrobe industry in NYC for the last 3 years and has worked on and off Broadway from American Ballet Theatre to &Juliet at The Stephen Sondheim Theater. The Bed Stuy Brooklyn neighborhood is where the heart of her work has begun to flourish. She teaches and volunteers with local non-profit organization Black Girls Sew\, where mentor and founder/creator\, Hekima Hapa leads classes and students through cut n sew fashion projects and field trips to experience and learn from the world around them.

Participants will learn several techniques (collagraph\, charcoal transfer and image transfer) to make and take home one-of-a-kind prints on paper. Students will explore layering\, texture\, and composition through hands-on experimentation. Beginner friendly\, no experience needed. All materials are provided. \n__ \nKaili Woop is a multimedia artist and designer based in Astoria\, Queens\, working across printmaking and wearable art. She is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and a 2023 recipient of the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Award and the SUNY Chancellor Award. Her work has been exhibited at The Museum at FIT\, The Alpha Workshops Gallery\, and US+U Gallery. Woop has over three years of experience teaching hands on printmaking workshops with organizations including Oolite Arts\, Wynwood Walls\, US+U Gallery\, Yonkers Arts\, and Queens Collaborative. She is currently focused on developing a wearable art and design brand using traditional printmaking techniques for clothing and accessories.

SUMMARY:BOOK TALK | Motown & The Making of Working-Class Revolutionaries with Jerome Scott and Walda Katz-Fishman
DESCRIPTION:An inside look at how the experiences of Black workers created lifelong revolutionaries \nMotown and the Making of Working-Class Revolutionaries offers a fresh perspective on class\, race\, and revolution in the United States. Drawing on more than forty hours of interviews with former members of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers\, Scott and Katz-Fishman share the rich story of the League\, including the women and students. That story includes the history of the automotive industry in Detroit\, the 1967 Detroit Rebellion\, and the wildcat strike that sparked the Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement (DRUM). The authors describe the rise of the League from 1968 to 1971. They explore the centrality of struggle and political education as the League split and a section of League comrades moved into revolutionary organizations and social movement spaces\, many of which remain active today. League comrades share their analysis of the current moment and staying the course of revolutionary struggle. \n\nJerome Scott\, a former labor organizer in the Detroit auto plants in the 1960s-70s and a founding member of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers\, was the founding director of Project South: Institute for the Elimination of Poverty & Genocide. He is a political educator in movement and labor organizations in the South and nationally\, and a contributing author/co-author to political education toolkits and numerous articles on the capitalist crisis\, the digital and AI technological revolution\, and class\, race\, and the revolutionary process. He was co-recipient of the American Sociological Association 2004 Award for the Public Understanding of Sociology\, is a board member of the General Baker Institute\, and is a member of the League of Revolutionaries for a New America. \nWalda Katz-Fishman\, a scholar activist and professor emerita of sociology at Howard University\, was a founding member of Project South: Institute for the Elimination of Poverty & Genocide. She facilitates political education in academic and movement spaces and is a contributing author/co-author and editor of popular education toolkits and numerous chapters and articles on the global capitalist crisis\, the AI/digital revolution\, class\, race and gender\, and revolutionary transformation. Ashley works in the day as a politicized therapist and coach for the QTBIPOC population which stemmed from their lived experience with madness and grassroots peer support organizing. Ashley is also a Collage Artist\, having taught and facilitated various classes and workshop spaces on the analog art form. Embroidery can be used for image making\, visible mending\, text\, multimedia collage\, and even to create 3-D forms. Participants will begin with this session learning a ‘vocabulary’ of traditional embroidery stitches\, making samplers to practice a variety of line\, texture\, images\, and techniques. In the second half of the workshop\, participants will apply what they’ve learned to create a wearable patch. We will learn some transfer techniques and how to stitch text. Patches could be an image or a political statement. Any level of experience is welcome. \n__ \nAnnie Zirin is an artist and educator with over 20 years of teaching experience. Annie’s studio practice involves fiber arts such as weaving\, crochet and embroidery\, as well as political comics and graphic arts. Using wax-resist techniques\, participants will learn how to design and create patterns on fabric while exploring the relationship between material\, memory\, and storytelling.\nThe workshop emphasizes experimentation\, cultural appreciation\, and hands-on learning\, making batik approachable for beginners while still engaging for those with prior textile experience. Participants will be guided through the full batik process right away from sketching ideas and applying wax resist\, to layering natural or fabric-safe dyes\, and finally revealing their finished textile piece.\nAlongside technical instruction\, the workshop encourages participants to reflect on personal or collective narratives they wish to express through pattern\, symbolism\, and color. \n__ \nDrishti Jaggi is a textile artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work centers on traditional batik techniques\, natural dye practices\, and community-based art education. Through hands-on workshops and interdisciplinary creative projects\, they explore the relationship between craft\, cultural storytelling\, sustainability\, and collective memory. DESCRIPTION:LOW-TECH PRINTMAKING: STENCILS & SCREENS w/ KERY RODRIGUEZ \nTwo-day | Friday\, August 21 5:30-8:30PM AND Saturday\, August 22\, 3-6PM    \nThis two-day workshop will introduce participants to mesh printing\, a low-tech printmaking process that combines modern DIY screen printing methods with late 19th century stencil-based image making. \nThrough the use of mylar stencils and modeling paste\, adaptable printing matrices will be created from window screen mesh; these “screens” will be highly capable of transferring images onto a variety of different hard and fabric surfaces. This workshop aims to expand the participants’ understanding of historical stencil and mesh-based printing techniques while encouraging a low cost\, DIY approach to printmaking. \n__ \nAs a multimedia artist\, Kery Rodriguez’ practice initially began in garment intervention. Pre-owned clothing was used as a site for countercultural expression. His work now explores reuse and recontextualization across collage\, digital design\, and alternative printmaking. Across these mediums\, Kery maintains a grounded focus in process and experimentation. With this approach\, he has been able to develop an adaptable low cost printmaking method that can work on a variety of surfaces. \nThrough facilitating collaborative learning environments\, he aims to share accessible creative tools that encourage participants to rethink material use.
