DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Paul and Eslanda Robeson Cinema at The People’s Forum\, created in the spirit of their love of art\, film\, and revolution. \nAmong the many things he is known for; theoretician\, intellectualist\, agronomist\, anti-colonialist leader\, revolutionary….Amilcar Cabral is considered one of the greatest leaders of all time. As one of the leaders of the African Party For the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC)\, Cabral led the movement to free the two countries from Portuguese rule. Although Amilcar Cabral was assassinated in 1973\, Guinea-Bissau gained their independence in that year and Cape Verde gained their independence in 1975. This film “Honoring Amilcar” captures Amilcar Cabral’s influence and impact on several social justice involved Black people in Cape Verde and The United States. Several threads of Amilcar Cabral’s philosophies\, practices\, values and virtues are connected through the testimony of the interviewees. Several emerging themes are his focus on the importance of culture\, disciplined revolutionary practice and strategy\, class struggle\, African identity\, humanitarianism\, anti-colonialism-fascism-racism and the need for solidarity. Representing three generations\, the film features testimony from Fania E. A conversation with Seth follows screening of his films: \nSMALL KITCHENS (31′\, 2019\, 2023) observes the physical connections and social contrasts of kitchen work between a Nepali restaurant and a Mexican food cart\, each owned and operated by immigrant women\, on the Elmhurst-Jackson Heights border under the 7 train\, in Queens. Workers participated as camera operators contributing POV footage of their labor. Initially shot in 2019\, in the months prior to the coronavirus crisis\, this observational tone poem is now a time-capsule of this most global part of NYC before it became the global epicenter of Covid-19 mortality. \nTHE ACTOR IN HIS LABYRINTH (32′\, 2023) maps Sebastián Ospina’s journey from Colombian TV star to “nomadic” NYC theater actor\, observing how his interborough and interamerican travels and travails resonate with those of Simón Bolívar in the play Ospina wrote and performs about the South American Liberator’s final trek through Colombia\, two centuries earlier. \nDADDY’S BOYS (33:11\, 2025) maps the adjacent politics of Donald Trump and Andrew Cuomo through their adjacent boyhoods in Jamaica Estates and Holliswood\, Queens\, and their respective relationships with their dads\, Fred and Mario. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in the U.S. and the Arab world. \nCourse Offerings\nAll classes run for 10 weeks. DESCRIPTION:In 2015\, students at the University of Cape Town ignited a movement that would reverberate across the globe by demanding the removal of a statue of the British imperialist Cecil Rhodes. What began as a protest against a single monument became Rhodes Must Fall: a confrontation with colonial legacies at South African universities that inspired a movement at Oxford and beyond. \nA. Kayum Ahmed tells the powerful story of Rhodes Must Fall\, tracing the emergence of a new decolonial framework\, Fallism\, and its trajectory from Africa to empire. Drawing on archival research and interviews with activists\, he interprets Fallism as both a critique of the university—rooted in patriarchy\, white supremacy\, and capitalism—and a broader decolonial theory. \nAhmed reveals how students combined acts of defiance with deeper forms of intellectual insurgency to challenge Eurocentric curricula\, linguistic hierarchies\, and the silencing of Black epistemologies. In so doing\, they transformed Black pain—the source of the uprising—into a collective struggle for Black liberation. \nBy following Fallism’s journey\, this book demonstrates how student movements create new vocabularies of resistance that transcend geographies of power. It underscores why universities remain battlegrounds in global struggles\, from conflicts over statues and curricula to pro-Palestinian protests. As new escalations of state violence are inflected by an ascendent Christian nationalism\, the Bible has been reasserted as a source of legitimacy and narrative force. Policing in the United States has always been intertwined with the Bible\, beginning in the colonial era and transatlantic slave trade\, and extending up through Jim Crow\, mass incarceration\, and the rise of the contemporary carceral state. The Bible was used to provide the mythic and moral context in which these histories of domination unfolded\, nourishing the growth of globalized racial capitalism\, (neo-)colonialism\, and imperialism as the zones of war within which policing is practiced. Her work explores socio-economic justice\, agropolitics\, and food sovereignty\, with a focus on the relationship between land\, identity\, and struggle. \nPublic Works: Public Works Studio is a Lebanon-based action research organization that uses a multidisciplinary approach to spatial justice. It addresses\, mobilizes around\, and actively responds to the chronic challenges facing just cities\, inclusive urban governance and equitable development in Lebanon.

DESCRIPTION:Documentary screening and discussion about the story of political prisoners John “Balagoon” Cole and Christopher “Naeem” Trotter. \n\n\n\n\nJoin the National Black Radical Organizing Conference (NBROC) for an event honoring political prisoners and featuring the documentary film The Pendleton 2: They Stood Up. This film tells the story of John “Balagoon” Cole and Christopher “Naeem” Trotter\, two prisoners who intervened to save a fellow inmate\, Lincoln “Lokmar” Love\, from a beating by KKK-affiliated prison guards in 1985\, leading to their unjust incarceration for over four decades. The event will feature the film’s co-director\, Too Black\, alongside members from Black Alliance for Peace\, Black Men Build\, Community Movement Builders\, and Spirit of Mandela. \nFilm Description \nOn the morning of February 1\, 1985\, Lincoln “Lokmar” Love was doomed to the same fate as George Floyd\, Tyre Nichols\, and so many other Black men in the US. As he lay handcuffed and shackled\, Pendleton Correctional Facility guards beat the prisoner beyond recognition as terrified bystanders watched from their cells. But Lokmar’s story ended differently when 2 fellow prisoners sacrificed their freedom to save him from his assailants — a Ku Klux Klan-affiliated guard gang known as the Sons of Light. “The Pendleton 2: They Stood Up” tells the story of John “Balagoon” Cole and Christopher “Naeem” Trotter\, the leaders of the Indiana prison uprising that rescued Lokmar\, exposed Pendleton’s dehumanizing conditions\, and unleashed the vindictive wrath of the Indiana Department of Correction. Presented by the Defense Committee to Free the Pendleton 2\, “They Stood Up” features exclusive first hand testimony from Cole and Trotter\, as well as interviews with family members and witnesses to the uprising who continue to fight for the Pendleton 2 after four decades of unjust incarceration and solitary confinement. \n  \nRSVP
