Welcome to Spanish for Social Justice! \n  \nAlgarabía Language Co-op is excited to announce that we are offering virtual Spanish classes this spring! \n  \nAlgarabía Language Co-op offers Spanish for Social Justice courses in partnership with The People’s Forum. We offer classes at the beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced levels of fluency for those interested in topics related to social justice\, politics\, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working-class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the book launch of Kyle Carrero Lopez’s electrifying debut collection\, PARTY LINE\, which centers three interconnected forces: social life\, US-Cuba relations\, and the lives of Black people in the United States and Cuba. Through familial\, satirical\, and geopolitical lenses\, Party Line considers how countries—and people—wield power over those they have othered. Kyle will be joined by writers Jasmine Sanders and Elisa Gonzalez. \nThe collection features a series meditating on tensions embedded in party spaces. Carrero Lopez challenges assumptions that these spaces are apolitical or purely escapist\, revealing unexpected connections between individuals’ actions and those of the state. His work expands bridges between US and Cuban art by developing an urgent poetics around the material conditions of the US embargo and challenging whitewashed images of Cuban Americans in the US imagination. \nAlternating between humor and lyric severity\, playfulness and political critique\, these poems negotiate contradiction with linguistic dexterity and critical consciousness\, proving that political poetry can be both serious and joyously alive. \n____ \nKyle Carrero Lopez is the author of MUSCLE MEMORY\, the chapbook winner of the 2020 [PANK] Books Contest\, PARTY LINE\, forthcoming July 2026 from Graywolf\, and serves as Editor for the Poetry Project Newsletter. Born to Cuban parents in northern New Jersey\, his work centers power\, social life\, and Afro-Cuban histories\, among other subjects. His writing has been highlighted in Best New Poets and Best of the Net; round-ups in W Magazine\, Current Affairs\, and The Atlantic; and episodes of Poetry Unbound and The Slowdown. \nElisa Gonzalez is a poet\, essayist\, and fiction writer. Her work appears in The New Yorker\, The Paris Review\, and elsewhere. Her debut poetry collection\, Grand Tour\, published by Farrar\, Straus and Giroux\, was named one of the best books of 2023 by The New Yorker. This one-day class covers the basic process of prep\, choosing photos/objects\, and exposure/printing. Cyanotype 101 is beginner-friendly and perfect for those who haven’t experimented with the medium before. \n__ \nPraise Fuller (b. Houston\, Texas) is a New York-based\, self-taught artist\, poet\, and educator with a practice spanning printmaking\, installation\, and mixed media with a central focus on the cyanotype process. Fuller’s work emerges from historical analysis and introspection\, exploring what lies beyond the constraints of family\, the church\, trauma\, and the cultural realities of the South. These introspections are interwoven with the concept of “rememory\,” a term borrowed from Toni Morrison\, which reflects how memory exists beyond\, or even escapes\, the individual mind by inhabiting objects\, places\, and communities.

This year\, capitalism’s destructive\, dead-end logic has been on full display—from Trump’s escalating assaults on Cuba and Venezuela to his losing war with Iran—all paid for by working-class families across the world already drowning in a worsening cost-of-living crisis. But this year we’ve also seen the general strike movement resurge for the first time in decades\, communities stand up in defense of immigrant families all across the country in the face of ICE terror\, and openly socialist candidates sweeping elections across New York City\, the center of global capitalism. These are not anomalies\, but the direct result of a system in crisis that is forcing a rising tide in consciousness within the belly of the beast\, as people look for an alternative against the existential threat of capitalism.  \nThat alternative is socialism\, and people are ready for it. And we have at our disposal all the means for making it an immediate actuality. But how? How do we assess and learn from the movements of the past\, in all its defeats and victories\, to build the future right now? DESCRIPTION:INTRO TO HOUSE: STEPS AND BEYOND w/ SAMA BAJONERO MORENO \nOne-day   |   5:30 – 8:30PM   |   Tuesday\, July 28   |   Sliding scale  \nThis one-day dance workshop brings club culture to the studio with an immersion into the music\, footwork\, and history of house\, born from Chicago in the 1980’s. The session will start with a warm-up before introducing foundational steps. We’ll build to a combination\, and practice circle drills to play with the levels\, speed\, and the direction of each movement. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own style to the workshop\, no experience needed! \nWear sneakers and clothes you can move in. \n__ \nBorn and raised in Mexico\, Bajonero started dancing at age three and developed a love for the fine arts. When she was nine\, Bajonero moved to Dallas\, TX\, where she honed in on performing and working closely with Artisan Center Theatre. \nLater she moved to New York City to develop her craft at The New York Conservatory For The Dramatic Arts were she majored in Musical Theatre (May of 2021) . By the summer of 2021\, Bajonero began dancing with Katharine Pettit Creative\, focusing on socio-political issues through movement. As of recent\, they trained closely with Ladies of Hip-hop in Ladies in Training. \nA dance teaching artist by day\, performer by night… and even a photographer in her free time.

DESCRIPTION:EMBROIDERY AS MEMORY w/ NICOLE MONTGOMERY \nOne-day   |   5:30 – 8:30PM   |   Thursday\, July 30   |   Sliding scale  \nThis embroidery workshop is designed for participants to build an understanding of basic stitches while exploring the importance of hand-sewing in history. After a technical demonstration\, the session will focus on stitchmaking as a form of storytelling. Participants are invited to embroider an image from memory\, drawing\, printed photograph\, or from the stencils provided. The workshop will culminate with learning how to mount your stitched images onto a textile of your choice. \nParticipants are welcome to bring photographs or sketches of their own to use as personal stencils. Examples: doors\, profile of a face\, flower. \nAll materials will be provided\, including the option to stitch on a tote or patch. \n__ \nNicole\, a native of Alexandria\, Virginia has been sewing since she was 12 years old. She made both of her high school prom dresses\, both being original and adapted designs. She studied fashion merchandising in college and went on to work as a visual merchandising coordinator and stylist for 10 years in home furnishings and fashion apparel. Once given the opportunity to follow her dreams in 2020\, has been working in the costume/wardrobe industry in NYC for the last 3 years and has worked on and off Broadway from American Ballet Theatre to &Juliet at The Stephen Sondheim Theater. The Bed Stuy Brooklyn neighborhood is where the heart of her work has begun to flourish. She teaches and volunteers with local non-profit organization Black Girls Sew\, where mentor and founder/creator\, Hekima Hapa leads classes and students through cut n sew fashion projects and field trips to experience and learn from the world around them.
