DESCRIPTION:PRINT-MAKING OPEN STUDIO w/ DANIEL + FRANCESCA \nAlternating Saturdays  |   11AM – 2PM   |   $20 \nOpen studio is a space to develop a print-making project in community with other organizers\, artists\, and cultural workers. \nThese sessions are designed for those who have taken Screen-print 101 or Revolutionary Print-making at The People’s Forum\, or who have experience with print-making. \nCome for one Saturday\, or return every other week! Each session is drop-in and goals are defined by the participant. \nBasic tools and materials are available—including ink\, linoleum\, paper\, transparencies\, screens\, and emulsion. \nSpring schedule: March 28 / April 11 / April 25 / May 9 / May 23 / June 6 / June 20 \nRegistration is required. Co-facilitated by Daniel Drennan ElAwar and Francesca Barr. \n__ \nDaniel Drennan ElAwar is an illustrator\, printmaker\, fiber artist\, and educator. His work\, based in a documentary genre\, focuses primarily on issues of displacement\, dispossession\, and disinheritance. His research and practice concerning decolonization and resistance led to the founding in 2009 of a Beirut-based artists’ collective\, ‎جمع اليد (Jamaa Al-Yad). He currently manages the studio and workshops for Frontline Arts in Branchburg\, NJ. \nFrancesca Barr is a working artist and writer from Massachusetts. She loves screenprint for the physical labor it demands\, and for its value in movement-making past\, present\, and future.

Full film synopsis below. \nPlease join us for a poetic and empowering afternoon at The People’s Forum! Following the film screening\, there will be a panel and organizing workshop featuring local advocates from the Campaign to Close Rikers\, Freedom Agenda\, the Jails Action Coalition\, HALT Solitary and more to help facilitate a deeper conversation about the current status of the complete plan to close Rikers Island Jail and organizing to push for its closure by the legally-mandated deadline of August 31\, 2027. We will also visualize and plan for the next phase of the closing plan that is also approved and legally-mandated – the creation of Renewable Rikers in its place. \nThe panel and workshop will be followed by poetry performances by featured artists TBD\, as well as an open mic. \nThe event is free and open to the public with an RSVP and a suggested donation. Space is limited; advance registration is required below. \n\nEVENTBRITE LINK  \nFILM SYNOPSIS\nFOR VENIDA\, FOR KALIEF (95 minutes) delves into the profound legacy of Kalief Browder\, who at age 16 was sent to New York’s notorious Rikers Island jail complex for allegedly stealing a backpack. After three years of solitary confinement\, he was released without charge\, but later committed suicide at the age of 22. At the heart of this narrative is his mother\, Venida Brodnax Browder\, who found solace in writing poetry before dying from broken heart syndrome. FOR VENIDA\, FOR KALIEF is a cinematic mosaic\, an immersive journey connecting past\, present\, and future that is balanced between contemporary verite and vivid poetic interludes and rare archival imagery that take us back to the untold story of the Citywide Jail Rebellion of 1970 led by the Black Panthers and Young Lords. Taking an unconventional and liminal approach\, the film explores how the carceral system is a vicious cycle\, and that an individual’s life – and afterlife – can expand exponentially to create societal change previously considered unattainable.

Participants will gather inspiration from collage artists who have created intentional Agitprop and then be provided with prompts and materials to create their own. \n__ \nAshley Marie Lagrange\, (They/Them) is a therapist\, coach\, and collage artist born\, raised and currently residing in Queens\, New York to a multigenerational household Dominican l household. Ashley works in the day as a politicized therapist and coach for the QTBIPOC population which stemmed from their lived experience with madness and grassroots peer support organizing. Ashley is also a Collage Artist\, having taught and facilitated various classes and workshop spaces on the analog art form. DESCRIPTION:Year: 1989 | Director: Leon Hirszman | Duration: 85 mins  | Brazil \n(Portuguese with English subtitles) \n“ABC da Greve” is a 1989 Brazilian documentary film by Leon Hirszman\, on the strikes of the ABC Region labor movement in the late 1970s. ABC stands for the three cities that surround São Paulo City\, which once composed the largest industrial park of South America: Santo André\, São Bernardo do Campo\, São Caetano do Sul. \nThe film follows the metallurgical workers of the large transnational automobile factories located in the ABC Region\, São Paulo in the late 1970s in their struggle for better wages and better living conditions. Filmed in 16 mm\, ABC da Greve records the effervescence of the labor movement\, which mobilized to carry out the first strikes in Brazil since 1968. These strikes preceded the country’s political amnesty and redemocratization and occurred during a brutal military dictatorship. The workers union was led by the then union leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva\, known as Lula\, who rose to found the Workers Party (PT)\, and during his two first terms as President of Brazil (2003-2010)\, provoked major structural changes in Brazilian society. \nLula is currently serving his third term as President of Brazil (2023-present). It is crucial for Lula to defeat the far right yet again in Presidential elections in Brazil in 2026. If elected\, Lula will be the only Brazilian democratically-elected President for a fourth mandate. \nWe bring back this film in a time when mass workers mobilizations and mass strikes are sorely necessary in the United States. It will be followed by a discussion* on labor unions\, people’s power and organized political movement\, with invited co-discussants from the Party for Socialism & Liberation\, Defend Democracy in Brazil Committee\, local unions\, and upper intermediate students from the Portuguese for Social Transformation classes taught by Natalia de Campos/ Syncretic Pleasures at The People’s Forum \n*This screening will have a bilingual English/Portuguese post-film discussion. \nAnyone is welcome. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an event with Lara Sheehi\, host of the Psychic Militancy podcast and author of the new book From the Clinic to the Streets: Psychoanalysis for Revolutionary Futures (Pluto\, 2026). \n  \nPsychoanalysis is having a resurgence in popularity—but it is not helping patients navigate the harm of modern-day capitalism. Instead\, it continues to enforce oppressive structures\, state power\, and reactionary politics. \nPractising psychoanalytic clinician Lara Sheehi creates a thrilling argument for how seizing the means of psychoanalysis can transform it into one of many tools in service of revolution\, showing how psychoanalysis can help unpack how psychological and emotional processes are mobilized by political power\, capitalism\, the state\, oppression\, and even genocide. \nArguing for a new\, liberatory psychoanalysis\, she calls for us to harness its radical power from the clinic to the streets. \n  \nLara Sheehi is a Research Fellow at the University of South Africa’s Institute for Social and Health Sciences\, a licensed clinical psychologist\, and the host of the Psychic Militancy podcast. Lara’s work focuses on psychoanalysis\, the psychic refusals central to liberation struggles and life-making in the Global South\, the psychic dimensions of resistance and revolution\, and critical Zionism studies. She is co-author with Stephen Sheehi of Psychoanalysis Under Occupation: Practicing Resistance in Palestine which won the Middle East Monitor’s 2022 Palestine Book Award for Best Academic Book. Lara is a member of the founding collective for the Institute for the Critical Study of Zionism and is on the advisory board for Forensic Architecture. \n  \nShe’s joined by local comrades for a panel discussion about the book. \n  \nAvgi Saketopoulou is an immigrant psychoanalyst from Cyprus and from Greece. Avgi teaches at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis and is the author of Sexuality Beyond Consent: Risk\, Race\, Traumatophilia. She is the founder of the Cypriot and of the Greek chapters of the Palestine Mental Health Network\, and a member of the founding collective for P-HOLE\, The Psychoanalytic Hub for Online Liberatory Education. She is working on a new book provisionally titled The Offer of Sadism: Disobedience and Resistance in the Anti-Reparative Turn \nMtume Gant is a Filmmaker/Artist\, Political Theorist and Educator. He is the director of several films\, most recently The Hand that Feeds and an Assistant Professor of Film at Purchase College. He is the host of Within Our Gates podcast where he looks at cinema and the arts from a materialist perspective\, as well as the co-host of The Imperial 80’s YouTube series\, an anti-imperialist analysis of 80’s cinema. He is currently finishing his first book The Three Cinemas\, a guide book on how to use the frameworks of Third Cinema as a tool for revolutionary analysis and practice. \nBushra Hasan\, M.D. (they/them) is a physician\, artist\, organizer\, and force of nature. They are a queer transgender Bangladeshi Muslim practicing life-making against empire\, both on the wards and in the streets\, following the tradition and lineage of Frantz Fanon and revolutionary psychiatrists before them. Elæ Moss Benedetto (they/ze) is a trans queer interspiritual minister formed across Catholic\, Buddhist\, Quaker\, earth-medicine\, and Jewish mystical traditions. They serve as Spiritual Care & Fellowship Director at Faith in Harm Reduction and an affiliated minister with the International One Spirit network\, and currently hold positions in Campus Ministry and as Faculty at Pratt Institute\, bringing a background in direct-action organizing\, mutual-aid system building\, and social-action-oriented art and media to their practice. She danced professionally with Dance Theater of Harlem\, is a vocalist with Samora Pinderhughes’s Healing Project choir\, has served as assistant dramaturg under Julia Reinhard Lupton for UC Irvine’s Shakespeare festival\, and as primary dramaturg for Niala Telfar’s “ICON” and Tethered Resident’s evening length work Images. As a published scholar\, Jehbreal researches the histories and theories of ballet\, ritual dances of the African diaspora\, music\, and race\, and as an organizer\, Jehbreal works as a core leader with Qween Jean and her Black Trans Liberation Kitchen\, feeding and clothing the Black and Brown trans community of New York every week at Judson Memorial Church. \nBorn in 1957\, the Reverend Yunus Coldman is a BIPOC leader from Buford\, South Carolina\, who now lives in New York City and plays several trans-spiritual roles simultaneously. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Soulful Touch Services. He is a licensed New York Wedding Officiant. He also offers various ceremonial and spiritual services (counsel\, meditation\, etc.). Additionally\, Reverend Yunus participates in many panel discussions and workshops to express his unique faith experiences and reflect on the intersections of being Black\, Transgender\, and masculine-identified. Seeking a religious path that would recognize the validity and diversity of multiple spiritual paths\, Reverend Yunus Coldman strove to become an ordained Interfaith Minister. He received his ministerial ordination from The New Seminary of Interfaith Studies\, Class of 2011.

This course will give you a solid base and allow you to start communicating with Portuguese native speakers. \nThe program will introduce grammar structures in practical ways\, and some writing exercises. The intensive course runs twice weekly on Zoom\, and an extra hour of required individual practice exercises. We offer classes at the beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced levels of fluency for those interested in topics related to social justice\, politics\, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working-class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills.
