Participants will learn several techniques (collagraph\, charcoal transfer and image transfer) to make and take home one-of-a-kind prints on paper. Students will explore layering\, texture\, and composition through hands-on experimentation. Beginner friendly\, no experience needed. All materials are provided. \n__ \nKaili Woop is a multimedia artist and designer based in Astoria\, Queens\, working across printmaking and wearable art. She is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and a 2023 recipient of the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Award and the SUNY Chancellor Award. Her work has been exhibited at The Museum at FIT\, The Alpha Workshops Gallery\, and US+U Gallery. Woop has over three years of experience teaching hands on printmaking workshops with organizations including Oolite Arts\, Wynwood Walls\, US+U Gallery\, Yonkers Arts\, and Queens Collaborative. SUMMARY:BOOK TALK | Motown & The Making of Working-Class Revolutionaries with Jerome Scott and Walda Katz-Fishman
DESCRIPTION:An inside look at how the experiences of Black workers created lifelong revolutionaries \nMotown and the Making of Working-Class Revolutionaries offers a fresh perspective on class\, race\, and revolution in the United States. Drawing on more than forty hours of interviews with former members of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers\, Scott and Katz-Fishman share the rich story of the League\, including the women and students. That story includes the history of the automotive industry in Detroit\, the 1967 Detroit Rebellion\, and the wildcat strike that sparked the Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement (DRUM). The authors describe the rise of the League from 1968 to 1971. They explore the centrality of struggle and political education as the League split and a section of League comrades moved into revolutionary organizations and social movement spaces\, many of which remain active today. League comrades share their analysis of the current moment and staying the course of revolutionary struggle. \n\nJerome Scott\, a former labor organizer in the Detroit auto plants in the 1960s-70s and a founding member of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers\, was the founding director of Project South: Institute for the Elimination of Poverty & Genocide. He is a political educator in movement and labor organizations in the South and nationally\, and a contributing author/co-author to political education toolkits and numerous articles on the capitalist crisis\, the digital and AI technological revolution\, and class\, race\, and the revolutionary process. He was co-recipient of the American Sociological Association 2004 Award for the Public Understanding of Sociology\, is a board member of the General Baker Institute\, and is a member of the League of Revolutionaries for a New America. \nWalda Katz-Fishman\, a scholar activist and professor emerita of sociology at Howard University\, was a founding member of Project South: Institute for the Elimination of Poverty & Genocide. She facilitates political education in academic and movement spaces and is a contributing author/co-author and editor of popular education toolkits and numerous chapters and articles on the global capitalist crisis\, the AI/digital revolution\, class\, race and gender\, and revolutionary transformation. Embroidery can be used for image making\, visible mending\, text\, multimedia collage\, and even to create 3-D forms. Participants will begin with this session learning a ‘vocabulary’ of traditional embroidery stitches\, making samplers to practice a variety of line\, texture\, images\, and techniques. In the second half of the workshop\, participants will apply what they’ve learned to create a wearable patch. We will learn some transfer techniques and how to stitch text. Patches could be an image or a political statement. Any level of experience is welcome. \n__ \nAnnie Zirin is an artist and educator with over 20 years of teaching experience. Annie’s studio practice involves fiber arts such as weaving\, crochet and embroidery\, as well as political comics and graphic arts. DESCRIPTION:LOW-TECH PRINTMAKING: STENCILS & SCREENS w/ KERY RODRIGUEZ \nTwo-day | Friday\, August 21 5:30-8:30PM AND Saturday\, August 22\, 3-6PM    \nThis two-day workshop will introduce participants to mesh printing\, a low-tech printmaking process that combines modern DIY screen printing methods with late 19th century stencil-based image making. \nThrough the use of mylar stencils and modeling paste\, adaptable printing matrices will be created from window screen mesh; these “screens” will be highly capable of transferring images onto a variety of different hard and fabric surfaces. This workshop aims to expand the participants’ understanding of historical stencil and mesh-based printing techniques while encouraging a low cost\, DIY approach to printmaking. \n__ \nAs a multimedia artist\, Kery Rodriguez’ practice initially began in garment intervention. Pre-owned clothing was used as a site for countercultural expression. His work now explores reuse and recontextualization across collage\, digital design\, and alternative printmaking. Across these mediums\, Kery maintains a grounded focus in process and experimentation. With this approach\, he has been able to develop an adaptable low cost printmaking method that can work on a variety of surfaces. \nThrough facilitating collaborative learning environments\, he aims to share accessible creative tools that encourage participants to rethink material use.

His research employs ethnographic and archival methods to examine historical collisions between Black radical organizations and state repression in the United States. Dr. Burton received his BA in interdisciplinary social inquiry from Hampshire College\, an MA in library and information science from Long Island University\, and a PhD in sociocultural anthropology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Burton’s work has been published in North American Dialogue\, The Black Scholar\, Radical History Review\, and American Anthropologist among other outlets\, and has received support from the Wenner-Gren Foundation\, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study\, and The Marguerite Casey Foundation\, which selected him as a 2021 Freedom Scholar. Tip of the Spear: Black Radicalism\, Prison Repression\, and the Long Attica Revolt is his first book (University of California Press\, 2023).

With enslaved workers brought from Africa\, more heavily during the 17th\, 18th and 19th centuries\, many different languages and backgrounds were also influential. \nBrazilian Portuguese continued to evolve as the common language amongst all living in Brazil\, and the one permitted to be spoken by the colonizers. However\, new words referring to foods\, materials and relationships with no correlations in Europe\, started to influence Continental Portuguese\, even though the grammar and syntax structures remained the same.  \nRevolutionary literacy methods created for adults\, by the influential educator Paulo Freire in the 1960s\, author of the Pedagogy of the Oppressed\, finally started to prioritize local people’s needs and generate wider political consciousness about the role of language in political emancipation to the elite oppressors. It is still used to combat illiteracy and poverty\, and to help achieve freedom\, much beyond Brazil’s borders.

DESCRIPTION:Arabic for Social Justice\nAPPLY HERE: Registration Form \nAlgarabía Language Co-op is offering new Arabic courses at The People’s Forum to those who are interested in learning Arabic with a focus on topics of social justice\, cinema\, media\, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes\, and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Arabic skills and critically engage with various cultural productions in Arabic\, including films\, TV series\, newsreels\, short stories\, and songs. \nThese courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in the U.S. and the Arab world. \nCourse Offerings\nAll courses run for 10 weeks. Total tuition for each complete 10-week course is $300–$400 on a sliding scale\, or $500 when paid through a work or professional-development stipend. \nBeginner I (in-person and virtual options)\nThis course introduces students with no prior experience to the Arabic alphabet and the basics of reading\, writing\, pronunciation\, and sentence structure.
