DESCRIPTION:Dates: Wednesdays\,  11/7\, 11/21\, 12/5\, and 12/19\, 7:00pm to 9:00pm \nBuddhism is well-known for its intricate philosophy and profound meditation practices. However\, the Buddha also gave a tremendous amount of wise advice about living peacefully with others – advice not just to monastics\, but also to kings and ministers\, merchants and priests\, craftspeople and laborers; advice about how to interact harmoniously with people of different backgrounds and conditions; about how to have mutually beneficial friendships and relationships; about how to live in the world as a beacon of harmony and goodwill in everything we do. \nDuring this series of workshops\, we will closely examine the Buddha’s teachings on communal harmony as preserved in the Pāli Suttas (the oldest extant collection of his words)\, and discuss how we can adapt and apply them to contemporary circumstances.

He is the author and translator of\, among other books\, Islanders\, Memories of Our Future: Selected Essays\, Nine Alexandrias by Semezdin Mehmedinovic\, and Outcast by Shimon Ballas\, all from City Lights Books. Alcalay launched Lost & Found: The CUNY Poetics Document Initiative\, an acclaimed publishing venture whose mission is to retrieve and make available key text falling widely under the rubric of the New American Poetry. \nAdam Fitzgerald is the author of the poetry collections The Late Parade (2013) and George Washington (2016). He teaches at Rutgers University and is a contributing editor for Literary Hub where he regular features and interviews contemporary poets. \nAdam Reich is an associate professor of sociology at Columbia University. He is the co-author\, most recently\, of Working for Respect: Community and Conflict at WalMart (Columbia University Press\, 2018). His previous books include Hidden Truth: The Young Men Navigating Lives in and out of Juvenile Prison (2010)\, With God on Our Side: The Struggle for Workers’ Rights in a Catholic Hospital (2012)\, and Selling Our Souls: The Commodification of Hospital Care in the United States (2014). \nCamille Rankine is the daughter of Jamaican immigrants. Her first full-length poetry collection\, Incorrect Merciful Impulses\, was published in 2016 by Copper Canyon Press. Her chapbook Slow Dance with Trip Wire\, was selected by Cornelius Eady for the Poetry Society of America’s 2010 New York Chapbook Fellowship. A graduate of Harvard University and Columbia University’s School of the Arts\, she serves on the Executive Committee of VIDA: Women in Literary Arts\, chairs the Board of Trustees of The Poetry Project\, and co-chairs the Brooklyn Book Festival Poetry Committee. She is a visiting professor at The New School and lives in New York City. \nCarolina Bank Muñoz is a Professor of Sociology at Brooklyn College. Her books include Transnational Tortillas: Race\, Gender\, and Shop Floor Politics in Mexico and the United States (Cornell\, 2008) and Building Power from Below: Chilean Workers Take on Walmart (Cornell\, 2017). With Bridget Kenny and Antonoio Stecher\, she edited WalMart in the Global South: Workplace Culture\, Labor Politics\, and Supply Chains\, just out from the University of Texas Press. \nDavid Stovall is the author of Born Out of Struggle: Critical Race Theory\, School Creation\, and the Politics of Interruption (SUNY Press\, 2016). He is Professor of Educational Policy Studies and African American Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago and co-editor (with William Ayers and Therese Quinn) of Handbook of Social Justice Education. \nFred Moten & Stefano Harney have been friends for thirty-five years and have been writing together for twenty. They are authors of The Undercommons: Fugitive Planning and Black Study\, A Poetics of the Undercommons and the forthcoming All Incomplete. \nJennifer Osula is a member of the Worker Writers School and an organizer at the Retail Action Project. She has recently performed her poems at the PEN World Voices Festival\, Berl’s Poetry Bookshop\, and elsewhere across NYC. \nLori A. Flores is an Associate Professor of History at Stony Brook University. Her first book\, Grounds for Dreaming: Mexican Americans\, Mexican Immigrants\, and the California Farmworker Movement (Yale University Press\, 2016) was named Best First Book by the Immigration and Ethnic History Society (IEHS) and Best History Book by the International Latino Book Awards. \nMarina Sitrin is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Binghamton University. Her recent and forthcoming books include The New Revolutions: From Social Movements to Societies in Movement (University of California Press\, forthcoming)\, They Can’t Represent Us! Reinventing Democracy from Greece to Occupy\, co-authored with Dario Azzellini (Verso Press\, 2014)\, Everyday Revolutions: Horizontalism and Autonomy in Argentina\, (Zed Books\, 2012)\, Occupying Language: The Secret Rendezvous with History and the Present\, co-authored with Dario Azzellini (New York Zuccotti Park Press\, 2012)\, and Horizontalism: Voices of Popular Power in Argentina (AK Press\, 2006). \nPeter Ikeler is the author of Hard Sell: Work and Resistance in Retail Chains (Cornell University Press\, 2016) and Assistant Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York\, College at Old Westbury. His research centers on post-industrial labor processes and movements\, as well as contemporary class structure and consciousness in advanced capitalist countries. \nSawako Nakayasu is a transnational poet\, and translator. She is an Assistant Professor at Brown University. Her books include The Ants (Les Figues Press\, 2014)\, Texture Notes (Letter Machine Editions\, 2010)\, and the translation of The Collected Poems of Chika Sagawa (Canarium Books\, 2015)\, as well as unconventional translations such as Costume en Face( Ugly Duckling Presse\, 2015)\, a handwritten notebook of Tatsumi Hijikata’s dance notations\, and Mouth: Eats Color – Sagawa Chika Translations\, Anti-translations\, & Originals (Rogue Factorial\, 2011)\, a multilingual work of both original and translated poetry. \nTimothy Liu is the author of ten books of poems\, including Of Thee I Sing\, selected by Publishers Weekly as a 2004 Book-of-the-Year; Say Goodnight\, a 1998 PEN Open Book Margins Award; and Vox Angelica\, which won the 1992 Poetry Society of America’s Norma Farber First Book Award\, and\, most recently\, Don’t Go Back to Sleep. This one-day class is about popular education – an approach to teaching and learning that connects theory\, experience\, and practical work for social change. These provocative drawings do not flinch from tackling the tough subjects that confront Palestinians\, from Israel’s everyday injustices in the West Bank to their frequent military operations on Gaza. \nSabaaneh’s work has been published in many newspapers across the Arab World\, and he is the principal political cartoonist for Al-Hayat al-Jadida\, the Palestinian Authority’s daily newspaper. It will be structured around the acclaimed scholarship of Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis and her book\, Always With Us? What Jesus Really Said About the Poor\, and the pedagogy of “reading the Bible with the poor” or “contextual Bible study.”   \nBecause of the significance the Bible holds for many in our society and because of the way the Bible has been used both as a “text of terror” and as an inspiration for social movements\, the Poverty Initiative and Kairos Center hold the Bible and contextual Bible study – what we term “Reading the Bible with the Poor” – as central work in building a social movement to end poverty\, led by the poor. This pedagogy grows out of examples from South Africa\, Latin American Liberation Theology\, and other experiences of the poor globally reclaiming the biblical mandate for justice\, and we have developed it within our U.S. context. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Duration: Saturday\, December 1\, 12pm – 4pm  \nThe Theater of the Oppressed\, established in the early 1970s by Brazilian director Augusto Boal (1931-2009)\, is a form of popular theater\, of\, by\, and for people engaged in arts for community building and civic engagement. Rooted in the Brazilian popular education and culture movements of the 1950s and 1960s\, it is a rehearsal theater designed for people who want to learn ways of fighting back against oppression in their daily lives. \n Accordingly\, the Theater of the Oppressed is a participatory theater that fosters democratic and cooperative forms of interaction among participants. Theater is emphasized not as a spectacle but rather as a language designed to foster critical thinking: 1) analyzing and discussing social problems; and 2) exploring group solutions to these problems. \nWe will explore our bodies as a tool of representing feelings\, ideas\, and relationships. Use games and exercises to recognize and confront internalized forms of oppression\, and explore power relations and collective solutions to concrete problems. \nThese ongoing community trainings are for folks new to T.O. or returning to deepen their understanding of how the tools can be used for radical transformation.  Each workshop can be taken as a stand-alone or together as a series. \nCommunity organizers\, cultural organizers\, healers\, activists\, and radical educators are invited to learn how to apply these methods and tools in your ongoing work.

Healthcare is at the center of debates about government spending\, of labor struggles\, and of conflicts within the major political parties. It’s constantly at the top of the list of issues people are concerned about. But at the same time\, the interests and forces that determine our health and control the healthcare industries are often hidden behind rhetoric\, jargon\, and misdirection. This class will introduce the economics and politics of health and healthcare\, take a critical look at the “solutions” to the healthcare crisis\, and put forward the visions and strategies of grassroots groups organizing for their human right to healthy lives and to the care we need\, when we need it.

SUMMARY:Power of the Healthcare Wedge: Medicare For All and Working Class Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:The working class of the United Sates-all those still working and all those of the class discarded\, disenfranchised and deemed redundant by the capitalists-is suffering a multitude of nightmares and insecurity because the basic human right to complete healthcare is denied. Our bodies and minds have long been deemed territory to mine for profit seeking by capitalists including the health and hospital corporations\, pharmaceuticals\, insurance companies\, financiers\, and numerous other sectors.  \nAs necessary services required by women continue to be taken away\, and deaths by opioids and suicide\, including children\, grow larger every year\, the bourgeoisie’s life expectancy extends while that of millions of working Americans declines. And now we are at a point in the US where some capitalists have laid claim to owning the DNA sequences of individuals. \nBringing together lab workers\, doctors\, physicians assistants\, maintenance staff at hospitals\, those who construct our places of treatment and recovery\, mental\, dental and visual health workers with the class at large and left movement organizations—all of whom have real interests in taking on this fight—could break the lock-hold American capital has ideologically\, legislatively\, and juridically and begin to open the way for further empowerment against the barbarous interests of these ruling neo-liberal capitalists. To accomplish this requires a national movement that can step up and unify us into a grand struggle. We of the MEP are just a small organization; it is the issue that is grand. We are committed to do our part through our programs to encourage dialogue\, discussion and debate\, and learning from each other and history\, towards advancing the struggle for universal heath care and movement building in the US. \nFollowing presentations by Christie\, Jenny and Mark we can address some of the many questions facing our movement including:\n1. What are the principal opportunities and threats facing the Medicare for All movement at this time?\n2. How does our understanding of these opportunities and threats inform our work in our unions\, communities and in society at large to help us realize our organizing priorities towards broadening this movement? \nJENNY BROWN is a women’s liberation organizer and former editor of Labor Notes. She is co-author of the Redstockings book Women’s Liberation and National Health Care: Confronting the Myth of America. She is author of Birth Strike: The Hidden Fight over Women’s Work\, forthcoming from PM Press in March. She writes\, teaches\, and organizes with the dues-funded feminist group National Women’s Liberation (womensliberation.org). \nMARK DUDZIC has a long history in the labor movement. He has had jobs such as sanitation worker near Buffalo\, NY\, cannery worker in Alaska and warehouse worker and taxi driver in NYC\, eventually graduating from CUNY in 1982. He became the National Organizer of the Labor Party after the death of Tony Mazzocchi in 2002. He is currently the National Coordinator for the Labor Campaign for Single Payer Healthcare. \nCHRISTIE OFFENBACHER is a clinical social worker and therapist in Brooklyn. DESCRIPTION:RSVP HERE \nOn December 10th\, 2018 \, the 70th anniversary of the International Human Rights Day\, the People’s Forum and the Defend Democracy in Brazil New York Committee will gather at 7 p.m. to discuss Human Rights in Brazil and to institute the Free Lula Day. \nThe event will count on speakers: Maria Luisa Mendonça (CUNY)\, who will speak about Human Rights and Social Justice in Brazil and Douglas Belchior (UNEAFRO Brasil)\, speaking on behalf of the Afro-Brazilian community and the work UNEAFRO does to guarantee access to Higher Education to people of color. Videos and photos of the struggle for rights\, and of the Former President Lula da Silva will remember this leader for social justice and mark the growing campaign to free Lula\, with a performance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. \nThe National Committee Free Lula\, together with Frente Brasil Popular\, which brings together more than 80 Brazilian social movements and organizations\, is organizing the International Action Free Lula on this day. Solidarity gatherings will take place in several cities in Brazil and abroad\, with the intention to raise awareness and disseminate trustworthy information about the case to the public. \nAlso\, on December 10 and 12\, Perseu Abramo Foundation\, The Free Lula International Committee and the Workers Party (PT) International Relations\, will be hosting the International Conference in defense of Democracy. The conference takes place in São Paulo and will bring representatives from left organizations and political parties from Spain\, Uruguai\, Portugal and members of the European Parliament. \nThey will discuss and develop the fight for democracy and the resistance to retrocess in public policies\, social inclusion and foreign policy\, as well as the intent to criminalize social movements. The New York event will align in the discussion of strategies abroad to safeguard the people’s rights. \nMaria Luisa Mendonça is a visiting scholar in the Center for Place\, Culture and Politics at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY). She holds a PhD in Philosophy and Social Sciences with a focus on Human Geography from the University of Sao Paulo (USP). She is the founder of Rede Social de Justiça e Direitos Humanos (Network for Social Justice and Human Rights – www.social.org.br) in Brazil and the editor of the book “Human Rights in Brazil\,” which has been published annually since 2000. This year’s edition was launched December 5th and denounces the decline of policies for human rights in Brazil in all sectors. She was one of the founders of the World Social Forum. As an activist\, she collaborates with organizations and social movements like Defend Democracy in Brazil and The Center for Economic and Policy Research. \nDouglas Belchior is a Historian\, teacher and Founder of the Black organization UNEAFRO-Brasil. Douglas is a writer of the Blog Negro Belchior in CartaCapital. Douglas is a leadership in the Black Movement in Brazil and was a candidate for the House of Representatives in the 2018 election. Villanueva will expose the racial and colonists dynamics within finance and philanthropy\, including our most popular aid organizations and nonprofits\, and will provide a framework for a better way. \nGoing beyond rhetoric\, Villanueva is leading a revolution out of what has come to be known as the “Non-Profit Industrial Complex\,” showing the world of philanthropy that non-oppressive wealth redistribution to communities and causes is possible. “Decolonizing Wealth” is a call to action for wealth redistribution in ways that will repair\, heal\, empower\, and unite. \nAfter a talk about his book\, Villanueva will be joined in conversation by: \nSarah Frank\, an organizer and Board Member with Resource Generation\, a multiracial membership community of young people (18-35) with wealth and/or class privilege committed to the equitable distribution of wealth\, land\, and power. \nYusuf Nuruddin\, a lecturer in the Department of Africana Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Boston.
