DESCRIPTION:The artist must take sides. He must elect to fight for freedom or for slavery. I have made my choice. I had no alternative.” — Paul Robeson \nIn times of war and crisis\, when people are rising up\, when people are taking a stand\, when the stakes could not be higher– what is the responsibility of the artist? \nHistory points us to the answer. Culture is the heartbeat of our movements. It brings people into collective action\, sharpens our sense of our own power\, and makes a better future feel possible. But the ruling elites also use culture to flood our screens with art that makes the current crisis feel natural\, inevitable\, and permanent. Artists on the side of freedom have to fight back. Nina Simone\, Langston Hughes\, June Jordan\, Elizabeth Catlett\, and Paul Robeson all took a side. The muralists of the Chicano Movement took a side. Hip-hop artists and those speaking out on stages\, screens\, studio walls\, and the streets today take a side. Now\, we as artists have to consider what that looks like in today’s context. \nIn this course presented by Artists Against Apartheid & The People’s Forum\, we will study the role of the artist in the movement. We will discuss the responsibility of artists to struggle against the system that exploits\, alienates\, and pacifies and towards building a culture that inspires\, drives\, and sustains our collective struggle for liberation. Art alone cannot make a revolution\, but it can transform the people who will. \nMore About the Course: You can take this course from anywhere in the world — join live in-person in NYC at The People’s Forum and online via zoom\, or access recordings and readings on your own time. There will also be opportunities to connect with people participating in your regional area to watch classes\, discuss and build connections together. Be sure to submit both the application and the assessment to get a registration link via email \nPortuguês Intermediário 2 is an advanced intermediate class\, designed by Natalia de Campos for The People’s Forum\, with a focus on deepening listening\, speaking and developing communication skills in Portuguese in a conversational style\, without translating into one’s native language\, to allow you to have more vocabulary\, composed verbal structures\, and more elaborate conversations with Portuguese native speakers.  \nWe will work with texts from Brazilian and other Portuguese-speaking revolutionary thinkers and writers\, such as Paulo Freire\, Carolina Maria de Jesus\, Conceição Evaristo\, and others. In nearby regions\, it is more widely spoken in areas of Newark\, New Jersey; Astoria\, Queens; in the coastal regions of Connecticut\, and Massachusetts.  \nBackground:  Since the 16th century Brazilians started to incorporate dialects\, words and sounds into Portuguese\, particularly from the Tupi and Guarani indigenous linguistic branches that make up the majority of the pre-Columbian indigenous languages of Brazil’s current territory. With enslaved workers brought from Africa\, more heavily during the 17th\, 18th and 19th centuries\, many different languages and backgrounds were also influential. \nBrazilian Portuguese continued to evolve as the common language amongst all living in Brazil\, and the one permitted to be spoken by the colonizers. However\, new words referring to foods\, materials and relationships with no correlations in Europe\, started to influence Continental Portuguese\, even though the grammar and syntax structures remained the same.  \nRevolutionary literacy methods created for adults\, by the influential educator Paulo Freire in the 1960s\, author of the Pedagogy of the Oppressed\, finally started to prioritize local people’s needs and generate wider political consciousness about the role of language in political emancipation to the elite oppressors. It is still used to combat illiteracy and poverty\, and to help achieve freedom\, much beyond Brazil’s borders.

DESCRIPTION:Arabic for Social Justice\nAPPLY HERE: Registration Form \nAlgarabía Language Co-op is offering new Arabic courses at The People’s Forum to those who are interested in learning Arabic with a focus on topics of social justice\, cinema\, media\, and culture. \nThrough weekly social justice themes\, and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Arabic skills and critically engage with various cultural productions in Arabic\, including films\, TV series\, newsreels\, short stories\, and songs. \nThese courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in the U.S. and the Arab world. \nCourse Offerings\nAll classes run for 10 weeks. His work focuses on occupation\, political violence\, and the destruction of place\, with particular attention to South Lebanon and the histories carried by its people and landscape. Bringing together field reporting\, documentary investigation\, and legal analysis\, he is a journalist at Legal Agenda\, where he writes long-form investigations and critical analysis. \nMichelle Eid:  is a Lebanese researcher and Editor-in-Chief of Al Rawiya\, a platform and magazine covering stories and analyses on Bilad al-Sham. Her work explores socio-economic justice\, agropolitics\, and food sovereignty\, with a focus on the relationship between land\, identity\, and struggle. \nPublic Works: Public Works Studio is a Lebanon-based action research organization that uses a multidisciplinary approach to spatial justice. DESCRIPTION:Documentary screening and discussion about the story of political prisoners John “Balagoon” Cole and Christopher “Naeem” Trotter. \n\n\n\n\nJoin the National Black Radical Organizing Conference (NBROC) for an event honoring political prisoners and featuring the documentary film The Pendleton 2: They Stood Up. This film tells the story of John “Balagoon” Cole and Christopher “Naeem” Trotter\, two prisoners who intervened to save a fellow inmate\, Lincoln “Lokmar” Love\, from a beating by KKK-affiliated prison guards in 1985\, leading to their unjust incarceration for over four decades. The event will feature the film’s co-director\, Too Black\, alongside members from Black Alliance for Peace\, Black Men Build\, Community Movement Builders\, and Spirit of Mandela. \nFilm Description \nOn the morning of February 1\, 1985\, Lincoln “Lokmar” Love was doomed to the same fate as George Floyd\, Tyre Nichols\, and so many other Black men in the US. As he lay handcuffed and shackled\, Pendleton Correctional Facility guards beat the prisoner beyond recognition as terrified bystanders watched from their cells. But Lokmar’s story ended differently when 2 fellow prisoners sacrificed their freedom to save him from his assailants — a Ku Klux Klan-affiliated guard gang known as the Sons of Light. “The Pendleton 2: They Stood Up” tells the story of John “Balagoon” Cole and Christopher “Naeem” Trotter\, the leaders of the Indiana prison uprising that rescued Lokmar\, exposed Pendleton’s dehumanizing conditions\, and unleashed the vindictive wrath of the Indiana Department of Correction. DESCRIPTION:Join the People’s Forum for an event to introduce Dr. Brian Kwoba’s award-winning book\, Hubert Harrison: Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism. He will be joined in conversation by Tajee Bounds to explore the many radicalisms of Hubert Harrison\, who emerges in the book as one of the most influential and neglected Afro-Caribbean revolutionaries in New York City’s history. \nAfter blazing a trail for people of color in the Socialist Party of America\, Hubert Harrison emerged as one of the most prominent Black freethinkers and free lovers of his generation. He practiced armed self-defense and called for an anti-capitalist Colored International in the face of European colonialism in Africa\, Asia\, Latin America\, and the Caribbean. Most spectacularly\, Harrison’s Liberty League of Negro Americans catalyzed the rise of Marcus Garvey and the largest international organization of African people in modern history. Because of his fearless radicalism\, however\, the full scope of Harrison’s revolutionary legacy has been erased from popular memory. Until now. \nUntil now\, Dr. Kwoba’s book has won the 2026 Frantz Fanon Outstanding Book Award from the Caribbean Philosophical Association and the 2026 Phillis Wheatley Book Award from the Sons and Daughters of the United States Middle Passage. According to Robin DG Kelley\, “Brian Kwoba has written a beautiful\, intellectual biography as radical and original as its subject.” \nDr. Kwoba is a professor of history and director of African and African American Studies at the University of Memphis. Over the past 22 years\, Dr. Kwoba has been an activist on issues including anti-imperialism\, immigrant workers’ rights\, climate justice\, decolonizing education\, Falastin\, and the movement for Black lives. DESCRIPTION:Year: 1989 | Director: Leon Hirszman | Duration: 85 mins  | Brazil \n(Portuguese with English subtitles) \n“ABC da Greve” is a 1989 Brazilian documentary film by Leon Hirszman\, on the strikes of the ABC Region labor movement in the late 1970s. ABC stands for the three cities that surround São Paulo City\, which once composed the largest industrial park of South America: Santo André\, São Bernardo do Campo\, São Caetano do Sul. \nThe film follows the metallurgical workers of the large transnational automobile factories located in the ABC Region\, São Paulo in the late 1970s in their struggle for better wages and better living conditions. Filmed in 16 mm\, ABC da Greve records the effervescence of the labor movement\, which mobilized to carry out the first strikes in Brazil since 1968. These strikes preceded the country’s political amnesty and redemocratization and occurred during a brutal military dictatorship. The workers union was led by the then union leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva\, known as Lula\, who rose to found the Workers Party (PT)\, and during his two first terms as President of Brazil (2003-2010)\, provoked major structural changes in Brazilian society. \nLula is currently serving his third term as President of Brazil (2023-present). It is crucial for Lula to defeat the far right yet again in Presidential elections in Brazil in 2026. If elected\, Lula will be the only Brazilian democratically-elected President for a fourth mandate. \nWe bring back this film in a time when mass workers mobilizations and mass strikes are sorely necessary in the United States. DESCRIPTION:2-week | 6-9PM | Thursdays\, June 18 + 25 \nIn this two-session workshop\, participants will be introduced to the equipment and processes involved in garment printing with water-based ink. \nThis course is designed for those who have previously taken Screenprint 101 at TPF or who have experience with the medium. Those new to screenprint are encouraged to join the upcoming Screenprint 101 Intensive. Portuguese is arguably among the 9 or 10 most spoken languages in the world\, but only 5 percent of its speakers live in its original home Portugal. It is estimated that 270 million people speak Portuguese today\, amongst which nearly 254 million are native speakers. It is the second most spoken Romance language\, after Spanish. Brazil’s 211 million people is the largest Portuguese-speaking population in the world. \nAs a colonial language\, it suffered many transformations\, particular to each locale. It is nowadays also a result of cultural resistance of the indigenous and enslaved people during colonialism. It is spoken in the U.S particularly in the Northeast\, in California and in Florida\, where native Portuguese speakers\, who are immigrants from Africa\, South Asia\, Europe and Brazil have concentrated historically. In nearby regions\, it is more widely spoken in areas of Newark\, New Jersey; Astoria\, Queens; in the coastal regions of Connecticut\, and Massachusetts. \n
