SUMMARY:Race and Revolution in the United States
DESCRIPTION:Duration: This class meets for six weeks\, Tuesdays 6-8pm\, from October 9 to November 13. \nContent: In the early 20th Century Black radicals in NY began to theorize the fallout of race ideology as a unique social injury distinct from\, but interconnected with\, class exploitation. They linked racial oppression to capitalism and imperialism\, and black liberation to the socialist project. They also argued that the struggle for socialism in the US  required a strong anti-racist platform and organizing agenda within the socialist movement—a position that differed from the one held by white American socialists at the time. Their analysis of race and class and the organizational conclusions they drew have been foundational for revolutionaries the world over. This course explores the position that historically oppressed groups in the US — Puerto Ricans and Native\, African\, Chinese\, Japanese and Mexican Americans have occupied in the US economy. We outline the Materialist/Marxist analysis of race ideology and how if differs from other interpretations. We also analyze the theoretical and political contributions that radicals of color in the US have made to the fight for human liberation. Topics include ideology\, race ideology in the US\, gender and sexuality\, Karl Marx on the Civil War\, the New Imperialism of the late 19th Century\, the African Blood Brotherhood\, interventions by Black Americans at the Comintern in Moscow\, Revolutionary Nationalism\, Communists in Harlem\, the Young Lords\, the Black Panthers\, the Brown Berets\, I Wor Kuen\, and the American Indian Movement\, among others. \nImage © ‘Se Siente El Miedo\,’ by Michelle Angela Ortiz

DESCRIPTION:Duration: This is a ten-week class on Tuesdays 6:30-8:30pm\, starting October 2 and ending December 4. \nContent: We’ll explore some key concepts about human beings\, society and history\, and our relationship to the rest of nature. Readings will be short and accessible excerpts from writings by Marx and Engels or later Marxists. I believe that this theory can help us analyze the social and economic realities and structures we live in–who holds power and how–and fight more effectively for liberation. \nIn a continuing attempt to increase access for those who have been historically excluded\, turned off or silenced by the way this theory is often taught and discussed\, we are offering this intro class for women only. Everyone who identifies as a woman is welcome.  \nSome of the central questions that we’ll address are: \nHow did the oppression of women\, and the division of societies into people who work and others who exploit them\, originate and develop historically? What are the driving dynamics of capitalism that make it make it so productive\, innovative\, brutal and ecologically destructive? What intellectual tools can help us understand industry’s complex impacts on our bodies\, our psyches and the nature around us—impacts that capitalists\, and people who think like them\, don’t want to see or cannot see? What did Marx understand—and not understand—about white supremacy and Eurocentrism\, and how has that analysis been deepened and modified by later Marxists?

As a consequence the FBI\, along with other governmental and right-wing organizations were monitoring them\, keeping meticulous files running many thousands of pages\, and making (and carrying out) plans to purge them from the cultural realm.  \nUsing music\, video selections\, news clippings\, and records from extensive Freedom of Information Act filings — including never before released material — this presentation will bring to life these artists and the systematic way they were subject to government surveillance and suppression. \nSpeakers  \nAaron Leonard\, author of Folksingers and the FBI \nMat Callahan\, author of The Explosion of Deferred Dreams \nDJ Dennis O’Neill \nSpeaker Biographies  \nMat Callahan is a musician and author originally from San Francisco\, where he founded Komotion International. He is the author of three books\, Sex\, Death & the Angry Young Man\, Testimony\, and The Trouble with Music as well as the editor of Songs of Freedom: The James Connolly Songbook. He currently resides in Bern\, Switzerland. \nAaron Leonard is a writer and historian. SUMMARY:Lessons from the National Union of the Homeless
DESCRIPTION:Duration: Saturday October 21\, 10am-1pm & 2:30-5:30pm. Please note there is a break between sessions\, from 1pm -2:30pm. \nContent: It’s been 30 years since the Tompkins Square Park “riot\,” and the story of how homeless individuals and families organized and built a formidable political force in the 80’s and 90’s is still misunderstood and understudied. \nThis course is an introduction to the National Union of the Homeless (NUH) – an organization led by homeless individuals and families which was active from the mid-80’s to the early 90’s\, and came to include some of the key leaders of the Tompkins Square Park encampment. At its height\, the NUH had over 25\,000 members in over 20 cities\, and led coordinated campaigns to takeover empty HUD housing and demand it be turned over to homeless families to live in. The instructors were all active leaders in the NUH and its affiliated student organization\, Empty the Shelters. The course will cover the context for the rise of the NUH\, the history of the movement\, lessons from its successes and failures\, and the organizing approach it helped to define – “the poor organizing the poor.”

DESCRIPTION:Three-part class on October 23\, 6-7:30pm\, October 25\, 6-7:30pm\, and October 28\, 2-3:30pm \nBetween the 24-hour news cycle and infinite scrolling newsfeeds on social media we’re exposed to so many injustices and outrages\, rightly demanding our attention\, that we can start to lose sight of the forest for the trees. This workshop aims to teach students how to make sense of all these events and identify the connections between them\, not just through abstract statements about capitalism\, neoliberalism\, systemic racism\, and other concepts\, but through making a concrete analysis of the situation\, based on systematic study. \nThe workshop will define and teach concepts such as structure and context\, strategy and tactics\, correlation of forces and hegemony\, and then engage students in a limited approach to making their own analysis using those concepts.

He is the author and translator of\, among other books\, Islanders\, Memories of Our Future: Selected Essays\, Nine Alexandrias by Semezdin Mehmedinovic\, and Outcast by Shimon Ballas\, all from City Lights Books. Alcalay launched Lost & Found: The CUNY Poetics Document Initiative\, an acclaimed publishing venture whose mission is to retrieve and make available key text falling widely under the rubric of the New American Poetry. \nAdam Fitzgerald is the author of the poetry collections The Late Parade (2013) and George Washington (2016). He teaches at Rutgers University and is a contributing editor for Literary Hub where he regular features and interviews contemporary poets. \nAdam Reich is an associate professor of sociology at Columbia University. He is the co-author\, most recently\, of Working for Respect: Community and Conflict at WalMart (Columbia University Press\, 2018). His previous books include Hidden Truth: The Young Men Navigating Lives in and out of Juvenile Prison (2010)\, With God on Our Side: The Struggle for Workers’ Rights in a Catholic Hospital (2012)\, and Selling Our Souls: The Commodification of Hospital Care in the United States (2014). \nCamille Rankine is the daughter of Jamaican immigrants. Her first full-length poetry collection\, Incorrect Merciful Impulses\, was published in 2016 by Copper Canyon Press. Her chapbook Slow Dance with Trip Wire\, was selected by Cornelius Eady for the Poetry Society of America’s 2010 New York Chapbook Fellowship. A graduate of Harvard University and Columbia University’s School of the Arts\, she serves on the Executive Committee of VIDA: Women in Literary Arts\, chairs the Board of Trustees of The Poetry Project\, and co-chairs the Brooklyn Book Festival Poetry Committee. She is a visiting professor at The New School and lives in New York City. \nCarolina Bank Muñoz is a Professor of Sociology at Brooklyn College. Her books include Transnational Tortillas: Race\, Gender\, and Shop Floor Politics in Mexico and the United States (Cornell\, 2008) and Building Power from Below: Chilean Workers Take on Walmart (Cornell\, 2017). With Bridget Kenny and Antonoio Stecher\, she edited WalMart in the Global South: Workplace Culture\, Labor Politics\, and Supply Chains\, just out from the University of Texas Press. \nDavid Stovall is the author of Born Out of Struggle: Critical Race Theory\, School Creation\, and the Politics of Interruption (SUNY Press\, 2016). He is Professor of Educational Policy Studies and African American Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago and co-editor (with William Ayers and Therese Quinn) of Handbook of Social Justice Education. \nFred Moten & Stefano Harney have been friends for thirty-five years and have been writing together for twenty. They are authors of The Undercommons: Fugitive Planning and Black Study\, A Poetics of the Undercommons and the forthcoming All Incomplete. \nJennifer Osula is a member of the Worker Writers School and an organizer at the Retail Action Project. She has recently performed her poems at the PEN World Voices Festival\, Berl’s Poetry Bookshop\, and elsewhere across NYC. \nLori A. Flores is an Associate Professor of History at Stony Brook University. Her first book\, Grounds for Dreaming: Mexican Americans\, Mexican Immigrants\, and the California Farmworker Movement (Yale University Press\, 2016) was named Best First Book by the Immigration and Ethnic History Society (IEHS) and Best History Book by the International Latino Book Awards. \nMarina Sitrin is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Binghamton University. Her recent and forthcoming books include The New Revolutions: From Social Movements to Societies in Movement (University of California Press\, forthcoming)\, They Can’t Represent Us! Reinventing Democracy from Greece to Occupy\, co-authored with Dario Azzellini (Verso Press\, 2014)\, Everyday Revolutions: Horizontalism and Autonomy in Argentina\, (Zed Books\, 2012)\, Occupying Language: The Secret Rendezvous with History and the Present\, co-authored with Dario Azzellini (New York Zuccotti Park Press\, 2012)\, and Horizontalism: Voices of Popular Power in Argentina (AK Press\, 2006). \nPeter Ikeler is the author of Hard Sell: Work and Resistance in Retail Chains (Cornell University Press\, 2016) and Assistant Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York\, College at Old Westbury. His research centers on post-industrial labor processes and movements\, as well as contemporary class structure and consciousness in advanced capitalist countries. \nSawako Nakayasu is a transnational poet\, and translator. She is an Assistant Professor at Brown University. Her books include The Ants (Les Figues Press\, 2014)\, Texture Notes (Letter Machine Editions\, 2010)\, and the translation of The Collected Poems of Chika Sagawa (Canarium Books\, 2015)\, as well as unconventional translations such as Costume en Face( Ugly Duckling Presse\, 2015)\, a handwritten notebook of Tatsumi Hijikata’s dance notations\, and Mouth: Eats Color – Sagawa Chika Translations\, Anti-translations\, & Originals (Rogue Factorial\, 2011)\, a multilingual work of both original and translated poetry. \nTimothy Liu is the author of ten books of poems\, including Of Thee I Sing\, selected by Publishers Weekly as a 2004 Book-of-the-Year; Say Goodnight\, a 1998 PEN Open Book Margins Award; and Vox Angelica\, which won the 1992 Poetry Society of America’s Norma Farber First Book Award\, and\, most recently\, Don’t Go Back to Sleep. He has also edited Word of Mouth: An Anthology of Gay American Poetry. Liu is currently a Professor of English at William Paterson University in New Jersey. \nVanessa Jimenez Gabb is the author of Images for Radical Politics\, which was the Editor’s Choice in the 2015 Rescue Press Black Box Poetry Prize contest; and the chapbooks midnight blue (Porkbelly Press\, 2015) and Weekend Poems (dancing girl press\, 2014). She received her MFA in Creative Writing from CUNY Brooklyn College\, where she was the recipient of the 2010 Himan Brown Award in Poetry. Currently\, she teaches at Newark Academy. \nZaina Alsous is the daughter of the Palestinian diaspora. She was recently announced as the winner of the Etel Adnan Poetry Prize for her collection A Theory of Birds\, to be published in 2019 by the University of Arkansas Press.
