DESCRIPTION:Basic Portuguese 2 / Português Básico 2 SUMMER INTENSIVE \nFor students who know the basic structure of Portuguese \nPortuguês Básico 2 is the second module of the beginner’s class\, designed by Natalia de Campos for The People’s Forum\, with a focus on listening\, speaking and developing communication skills in Portuguese. This course will give you a solid base and allow you to start communicating with Portuguese native speakers. \nThe program will introduce grammar structures in practical ways\, and some writing exercises. The intensive course runs twice weekly on Zoom\, and an extra hour of required individual practice exercises. Welcome to Spanish for Social Justice! \n  \nAlgarabía Language Co-op is excited to announce that we are offering virtual Spanish classes this spring! \n  \nAlgarabía Language Co-op offers Spanish for Social Justice courses in partnership with The People’s Forum. We offer classes at the beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced levels of fluency for those interested in topics related to social justice\, politics\, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working-class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. DESCRIPTION:INTRO TO HOUSE: STEPS AND BEYOND w/ SAMA BAJONERO MORENO \nOne-day   |   5:30 – 8:30PM   |   Tuesday\, July 28   |   Sliding scale  \nThis one-day dance workshop brings club culture to the studio with an immersion into the music\, footwork\, and history of house\, born from Chicago in the 1980’s. The session will start with a warm-up before introducing foundational steps. We’ll build to a combination\, and practice circle drills to play with the levels\, speed\, and the direction of each movement. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own style to the workshop\, no experience needed! \nWear sneakers and clothes you can move in. \n__ \nBorn and raised in Mexico\, Bajonero started dancing at age three and developed a love for the fine arts. When she was nine\, Bajonero moved to Dallas\, TX\, where she honed in on performing and working closely with Artisan Center Theatre. \nLater she moved to New York City to develop her craft at The New York Conservatory For The Dramatic Arts were she majored in Musical Theatre (May of 2021) . By the summer of 2021\, Bajonero began dancing with Katharine Pettit Creative\, focusing on socio-political issues through movement. As of recent\, they trained closely with Ladies of Hip-hop in Ladies in Training. \nA dance teaching artist by day\, performer by night… and even a photographer in her free time.

DESCRIPTION:EMBROIDERY AS MEMORY w/ NICOLE MONTGOMERY \nOne-day   |   5:30 – 8:30PM   |   Thursday\, July 30   |   Sliding scale  \nThis embroidery workshop is designed for participants to build an understanding of basic stitches while exploring the importance of hand-sewing in history. After a technical demonstration\, the session will focus on stitchmaking as a form of storytelling. Participants are invited to embroider an image from memory\, drawing\, printed photograph\, or from the stencils provided. The workshop will culminate with learning how to mount your stitched images onto a textile of your choice. \nParticipants are welcome to bring photographs or sketches of their own to use as personal stencils. Examples: doors\, profile of a face\, flower. \nAll materials will be provided\, including the option to stitch on a tote or patch. \n__ \nNicole\, a native of Alexandria\, Virginia has been sewing since she was 12 years old. She made both of her high school prom dresses\, both being original and adapted designs. She studied fashion merchandising in college and went on to work as a visual merchandising coordinator and stylist for 10 years in home furnishings and fashion apparel. Once given the opportunity to follow her dreams in 2020\, has been working in the costume/wardrobe industry in NYC for the last 3 years and has worked on and off Broadway from American Ballet Theatre to &Juliet at The Stephen Sondheim Theater. The Bed Stuy Brooklyn neighborhood is where the heart of her work has begun to flourish. She teaches and volunteers with local non-profit organization Black Girls Sew\, where mentor and founder/creator\, Hekima Hapa leads classes and students through cut n sew fashion projects and field trips to experience and learn from the world around them.

After an introduction to core design principles\, participants will spend this workshop developing their own visual language to produce a poster using analog and digital techniques. \nThrough demonstrations\, critiques\, and collaborative discussion\, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of design as a tool for social change. No previous experience necessary! \n____ \nJohn Kudos and David Jon Walker are cofounders of WeType and partners at KASA Collective. Drawing from their work designing exhibitions\, public experiences\, and typefaces rooted in cultural research\, David and John will guide participants through the anatomy of an effective poster—from message and audience to hierarchy\, format\, and production.

SUMMARY:BOOK TALK | Motown & The Making of Working-Class Revolutionaries with Jerome Scott and Walda Katz-Fishman
DESCRIPTION:An inside look at how the experiences of Black workers created lifelong revolutionaries \nMotown and the Making of Working-Class Revolutionaries offers a fresh perspective on class\, race\, and revolution in the United States. Drawing on more than forty hours of interviews with former members of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers\, Scott and Katz-Fishman share the rich story of the League\, including the women and students. That story includes the history of the automotive industry in Detroit\, the 1967 Detroit Rebellion\, and the wildcat strike that sparked the Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement (DRUM). The authors describe the rise of the League from 1968 to 1971. They explore the centrality of struggle and political education as the League split and a section of League comrades moved into revolutionary organizations and social movement spaces\, many of which remain active today. League comrades share their analysis of the current moment and staying the course of revolutionary struggle. \n\nJerome Scott\, a former labor organizer in the Detroit auto plants in the 1960s-70s and a founding member of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers\, was the founding director of Project South: Institute for the Elimination of Poverty & Genocide. He is a political educator in movement and labor organizations in the South and nationally\, and a contributing author/co-author to political education toolkits and numerous articles on the capitalist crisis\, the digital and AI technological revolution\, and class\, race\, and the revolutionary process. He was co-recipient of the American Sociological Association 2004 Award for the Public Understanding of Sociology\, is a board member of the General Baker Institute\, and is a member of the League of Revolutionaries for a New America. \nWalda Katz-Fishman\, a scholar activist and professor emerita of sociology at Howard University\, was a founding member of Project South: Institute for the Elimination of Poverty & Genocide. She facilitates political education in academic and movement spaces and is a contributing author/co-author and editor of popular education toolkits and numerous chapters and articles on the global capitalist crisis\, the AI/digital revolution\, class\, race and gender\, and revolutionary transformation. Ashley works in the day as a politicized therapist and coach for the QTBIPOC population which stemmed from their lived experience with madness and grassroots peer support organizing. Ashley is also a Collage Artist\, having taught and facilitated various classes and workshop spaces on the analog art form.
