We will read about and discuss a few of the most important social movements in Brazil. This course has a fast approach for people who already speak basic Portuguese. \nDuring the course we will use visual materials\, music\, literature\, and conversation\, focusing on Brazilian Portuguese\, and we will also examine a few more differences between Brazilian\, African\, South Asian and European/Continental Portuguese. The program will deepen grammar structures in practical ways\, and include writing and speaking exercises. We will engage with the history of Brazilian people\, its revolutionary struggles\, and other means of resistance. \nYou will learn about historical and contemporary contexts of the working classes and social movements in Brazil\, and other Portuguese-speaking countries. \n  \nBackground information: \nPortuguese is a language with roots in Portugal and also the official language spoken today in 10 countries: Brazil\, Mozambique\, Angola\, Portugal\, Guinea-Bissau\, East Timor\, Equatorial Guinea\, Macau\, Cape Verde\, and São Tomé and Príncipe. Portuguese is arguably among the 9 or 10 most spoken languages in the world\, but only 5 percent of its speakers live in its original home Portugal. It is estimated that 270 million people speak Portuguese today\, amongst which nearly 254 million are native\nspeakers. It is the second most spoken Romance language\, after Spanish. Brazil’s 211 million people is the largest Portuguese-speaking population in the world. \nAs a colonial language\, it suffered many transformations\, particular to each locale. It is nowadays also a result of cultural resistance of the indigenous and enslaved people during colonialism. It is spoken in the U.S particularly in the Northeast\, in California and in Florida\, where native Portuguese speakers\, who are immigrants from Africa\, South Asia\, Europe and Brazil have concentrated historically. SUMMARY:[SERIES] Hidden Histories of Rebellion in the United States
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nThe stories we tell\, and those we don’t\, have serious consequences for our reality and our future. \nThrough all means of communication\, the Trump administration and its billionaire backers are manufacturing a false narrative about the history\, people\, and current reality of the United States to justify their racist\, xenophobic\, patriarchal\, and colonial agenda for people in the US and across the world.  \nAs we approach the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States\, the Trump administration and its billionaire backers are using this moment to launch an all-out attack on history and truth\, intending to replace it with a false narrative that justifies their racist\, xenophobic\, patriarchal\, and colonial agenda for people in the US and across the world.   \nThey glorify the parts of history that serve their racist program today\, while censoring the histories of heroic resistance\, solidarity\, and multiracial unity that shaped the people and history of the United States. They persecute those who tell the truth about the horrors of slavery and the fight that abolished it. They erase the history of Jim Crow and dismiss the millions who rose up to dismantle legal apartheid in this country. The examples are in the thousands. \nThis is a blatant attempt to weaponize a distorted version of US history to make their extreme right-wing project appear natural\, popular\, and uncontested. But their story is based on lies. Not only is their agenda completely and massively unpopular\, their version of history is so manipulated that it is more fiction than fact.  \nIt is up to us to expose these lies. We must become the arbiters of truth\, and tell the stories of our people\, our heroes\, the millions who have fought oppression and exploitation and demanded a better world.  \nThis seminar series is part of reclaiming that history. We will uncover just a fraction of the hidden and mostly unknown people’s rebellions that have shaped the history of the United States. Through weekly social justice themes\, and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Arabic skills\, and critically engage with various cultural productions in Arabic\, including films\, TV series\, newsreels\, short stories\, and songs.  \nThese courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in the U.S. and the Arab world.  \nSelected participants will be contacted by our instructors on a rolling basis and until a week before classes start. The volunteer training will cover basic rights when inateracting with ICE and other law enforcement and how to stay safe\, organized\, and effective before\, during\, and after accompaniment. \n🔗 RSVP now at the link in bio and get involved! \nℹ️ New York City\, home to one of the largest and most diverse immigrant populations in the country\, now leads the nation in ICE courthouse abductions. Due to the city’s robust networks of unions\, community organizations\, and immigrant-led groups\, it is also a key location to establish defense and solidarity that can set national precedents for sanctuary and collective protection. \n📝Become part of the volunteer network to support immigrants at court hearings and ICE/ISAP check-ins in New York City. This work responds to escalating federal enforcement targeting immigrant communities through raids\, detention\, and courthouse arrests. \n‼️ Volunteers accompany community members through these high-risk appointments to provide a calm\, supportive presence\, follow safety protocols\, and stay in contact with the coordination team. Volunteers should be U.S. citizens or non-citizens who understand the risks and have morning availability (usually 7:00–11:00 a.m.). We refuse to go to Vietnam!!!!!!” – Fort Hood Three  \nWhen soldiers in Vietnam began refusing combat orders\, organizing underground anti-war newspapers\, and taking action against their officers\, the U.S. military faced an army in rebellion against the war itself. This class examines the massive GI resistance movement that emerged within the ranks during the Vietnam War\, from individual acts of defiance to organized mutinies\, antiwar coffeehouses near military bases\, and networks of active-duty soldiers who saw themselves not as heroes but as war criminals being ordered to commit atrocities. We’ll explore how this internal revolt\, spanning all branches of service and crossing lines of race and rank\, helped force an end to the war and why the military establishment has worked so hard to erase this history of soldiers who chose conscience over orders. \nINSTRUCTOR: Mike Prysner is an Iraq war veteran turned anti-war organizer\, working with U.S. service members. As a producer & director for Empire Files he has created a body of anti-imperialist films\, podcasts and educational materials (most recently Earth’s Greatest Enemy). In the midst of an ongoing opioid overdose crisis\, it’s easier to get fentanyl on the street than it is to get methadone from a clinic. This live panel of experts will unpack the carceral and racist history of methadone. Panelists will discuss how siloed clinics are a creation of the War on Drugs\, expose the role of the Drug Enforcement Administration and the culture of cruelty\, and explain how methadone is harm reduction but the system that controls access to it is harm production. Welcome to Spanish for Social Justice! \nAlgarabía Language Co-op is excited to announce that we are offering virtual Spanish classes this spring! \nAlgarabía Language Co-op offers Spanish for Social Justice courses in partnership with The People’s Forum. We offer classes at the beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced levels of fluency for those interested in topics related to social justice\, politics\, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working-class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. With CEOs treating our art and our livelihoods as data to be traded\, AI contributing to the destruction of our planet and the commodification of art\, and any money made seeming to still end up funding genocide and systemic oppression\, filling the pockets of those who Leilani speaks against\, they wanted out. This release is just as much of an experiment of sound as it is an experiment of sharing this music. \nViolet Stanza is a singer/songwriter whose writing ranges from pop bangers to tender ballads. Her music has earned several accolades\, winning both BroadwayWorld’s Best Original Song\, and the Goethe Institut’s International Music Contest. Violet can be found performing around New York\, or online where her content has amassed over 800 thousand followers across platforms. She hopes to empower other queer and trans people through her art\, and make the world a prettier place along the way. \nZoe Firn has a song for every mood. Wielding a guitar\, her voice\, and sometimes a violin\, Zoe crafts earthy alt-rock tunes that “you’ll want to take home in your pocket” (according to Molly Murphy) and lyrics that “hit harder than a Mack truck” (according to Radio Free Brooklyn). She aims to connect with listeners\, whether it’s an audience of 1 through a pair of headphones\, a handful of friends in the back of a bar\, or over 100 on a particularly celebratory night. Zoe’s debut album “Atomic Force” was released in October 2025 on Bandcamp/CDs then in December 2025 on all streaming sites excluding Spotify. And she hopes the songs stick with you long after the first listen. \nTHE DRIPS are a new BK based Indie band that fuses together a gnarly potion of folk\, pop\, & punk-rock. The coven is made up of Déa\, Aspen\, and Caro\, who met on a moonlit night in a Dunkin-donuts parking lot. Their hex-proof cauldron is specially brewed to connect queer comrades far and wide. Transvolution\, the band’s debut album\, is available in physical form\, as well as anywhere where artist wages are ethical and AI is prohibited. \n\nAristilde Kirby is a poet & performance artist from the Bronx living in Brooklyn. She has written the book Daisy & Catherine Squared (Auric Press\, 2022) & the chapbook Sonnet Infinitésimal / Material Girl (Best American Experimental Writing\, 2020). She is writing a couple of books riffing off ideas of math.

DESCRIPTION:FIGURE DRAWING NIGHT w/ NICK SKOUG \nOne-day   |   6-8:30PM   |   Thursday\, March 26  |   $20 \nIn these one-day drawing sessions\, we will practice figure drawing with a live model\, working independently with guidance and input from the teacher. \nBasic drawing materials will be available (paper\, drawing boards\, pencils\, charcoal\, erasers). Participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies as well! \n__ \nNick Skoug is a figurative painter. Originally from the Los Angeles area\, he studied painting there before moving to Germany\, where he lived for 10 years. He left Berlin for a Master’s Degree in Painting at the New York Studio School.
