SUMMARY:Lessons from the National Union of the Homeless
DESCRIPTION:Duration: Saturday October 21\, 10am-1pm & 2:30-5:30pm. Please note there is a break between sessions\, from 1pm -2:30pm. \nContent: It’s been 30 years since the Tompkins Square Park “riot\,” and the story of how homeless individuals and families organized and built a formidable political force in the 80’s and 90’s is still misunderstood and understudied. \nThis course is an introduction to the National Union of the Homeless (NUH) – an organization led by homeless individuals and families which was active from the mid-80’s to the early 90’s\, and came to include some of the key leaders of the Tompkins Square Park encampment. At its height\, the NUH had over 25\,000 members in over 20 cities\, and led coordinated campaigns to takeover empty HUD housing and demand it be turned over to homeless families to live in. The instructors were all active leaders in the NUH and its affiliated student organization\, Empty the Shelters. The course will cover the context for the rise of the NUH\, the history of the movement\, lessons from its successes and failures\, and the organizing approach it helped to define – “the poor organizing the poor.”

DESCRIPTION:Three-part class on October 23\, 6-7:30pm\, October 25\, 6-7:30pm\, and October 28\, 2-3:30pm \nBetween the 24-hour news cycle and infinite scrolling newsfeeds on social media we’re exposed to so many injustices and outrages\, rightly demanding our attention\, that we can start to lose sight of the forest for the trees. This workshop aims to teach students how to make sense of all these events and identify the connections between them\, not just through abstract statements about capitalism\, neoliberalism\, systemic racism\, and other concepts\, but through making a concrete analysis of the situation\, based on systematic study. \nThe workshop will define and teach concepts such as structure and context\, strategy and tactics\, correlation of forces and hegemony\, and then engage students in a limited approach to making their own analysis using those concepts.

DESCRIPTION:This one-day seminar is an overview of the historical and contemporary significance of the U.S. South. The South has been central to the maintenance of the nation’s power structure\, yet it has also been the site of many of its most transformative social movements and struggles. The course will analyze this dynamic and its implications for today. Areas of focus will include the abolitionist movement\, the Civil War and Reconstruction\, the Southern labor struggles of the Depression era\, and the “Long Civil Rights Movement” of the 1940’s-60’s. The course will end with an analysis of the developments of the last half century\, and the potentials for movement building in the current period.

And today\, the fourth horseman of these Apocalyptic forces is the ecological crisis. John Wessel-McCoy\, educator and organizer from the Kairos Center and the University of the Poor\, has conducted tours with grassroots community and religious organizations from across the United States and social movement across the globe. \nWall Street stands above all other command centers of global capitalism\, and that’s why it’s so important that people struggling from below come here to see it for themselves – to reflect on the Wall Street Bull\, the New York Stock Exchange\, to know our history\, and to know who we’re up against. DESCRIPTION:Duration: This course meets Tuesdays 5:30-8:30pm on November 6\, 13\, and 20. \nContent: This course will provide a conceptual overview and history of a particular understanding and practice of religion that has developed through social struggles and played an integral role in advancing those struggles. The course will examine some of the principles behind liberation theology as it has emerged in historical struggles of the poor\, including Latin American Liberation Theology\, Black Liberation Theology\, as well as in the context of non-Christian contexts. It will also take up questions about how such a theology is emerging in struggles today\, in particular by drawing on the experiences and insights of leaders from the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. \n

DESCRIPTION:This three-part workshop runs on November 6\, 6-7:30 pm\, November 8\, 6-7:30 pm\, and November 11\, 2-3:30 pm. \nBetween the 24-hour news cycle and infinite scrolling newsfeeds on social media we’re exposed to so many injustices and outrages\, rightly demanding our attention\, that we can start to lose sight of the forest for the trees. This workshop aims to teach students how to make sense of all these events and identify the connections between them\, not just through abstract statements about capitalism\, neoliberalism\, systemic racism\, and other concepts\, but through making a concrete analysis of the situation\, based on systematic study. \nThe workshop will define and teach concepts such as structure and context\, strategy and tactics\, correlation of forces and hegemony\, and then engage students in a limited approach to making their own analysis using those concepts.

However\, the Buddha also gave a tremendous amount of wise advice about living peacefully with others – advice not just to monastics\, but also to kings and ministers\, merchants and priests\, craftspeople and laborers; advice about how to interact harmoniously with people of different backgrounds and conditions; about how to have mutually beneficial friendships and relationships; about how to live in the world as a beacon of harmony and goodwill in everything we do. \nDuring this series of workshops\, we will closely examine the Buddha’s teachings on communal harmony as preserved in the Pāli Suttas (the oldest extant collection of his words)\, and discuss how we can adapt and apply them to contemporary circumstances.

Alcalay launched Lost & Found: The CUNY Poetics Document Initiative\, an acclaimed publishing venture whose mission is to retrieve and make available key text falling widely under the rubric of the New American Poetry. \nAdam Fitzgerald is the author of the poetry collections The Late Parade (2013) and George Washington (2016). He teaches at Rutgers University and is a contributing editor for Literary Hub where he regular features and interviews contemporary poets. \nAdam Reich is an associate professor of sociology at Columbia University. He is the co-author\, most recently\, of Working for Respect: Community and Conflict at WalMart (Columbia University Press\, 2018). His previous books include Hidden Truth: The Young Men Navigating Lives in and out of Juvenile Prison (2010)\, With God on Our Side: The Struggle for Workers’ Rights in a Catholic Hospital (2012)\, and Selling Our Souls: The Commodification of Hospital Care in the United States (2014). \nCamille Rankine is the daughter of Jamaican immigrants. Her first full-length poetry collection\, Incorrect Merciful Impulses\, was published in 2016 by Copper Canyon Press. Her chapbook Slow Dance with Trip Wire\, was selected by Cornelius Eady for the Poetry Society of America’s 2010 New York Chapbook Fellowship. A graduate of Harvard University and Columbia University’s School of the Arts\, she serves on the Executive Committee of VIDA: Women in Literary Arts\, chairs the Board of Trustees of The Poetry Project\, and co-chairs the Brooklyn Book Festival Poetry Committee. She is a visiting professor at The New School and lives in New York City. \nCarolina Bank Muñoz is a Professor of Sociology at Brooklyn College. Her books include Transnational Tortillas: Race\, Gender\, and Shop Floor Politics in Mexico and the United States (Cornell\, 2008) and Building Power from Below: Chilean Workers Take on Walmart (Cornell\, 2017). With Bridget Kenny and Antonoio Stecher\, she edited WalMart in the Global South: Workplace Culture\, Labor Politics\, and Supply Chains\, just out from the University of Texas Press. \nDavid Stovall is the author of Born Out of Struggle: Critical Race Theory\, School Creation\, and the Politics of Interruption (SUNY Press\, 2016). He is Professor of Educational Policy Studies and African American Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago and co-editor (with William Ayers and Therese Quinn) of Handbook of Social Justice Education. \nFred Moten & Stefano Harney have been friends for thirty-five years and have been writing together for twenty. They are authors of The Undercommons: Fugitive Planning and Black Study\, A Poetics of the Undercommons and the forthcoming All Incomplete. \nJennifer Osula is a member of the Worker Writers School and an organizer at the Retail Action Project. She has recently performed her poems at the PEN World Voices Festival\, Berl’s Poetry Bookshop\, and elsewhere across NYC. \nLori A. Flores is an Associate Professor of History at Stony Brook University. Her first book\, Grounds for Dreaming: Mexican Americans\, Mexican Immigrants\, and the California Farmworker Movement (Yale University Press\, 2016) was named Best First Book by the Immigration and Ethnic History Society (IEHS) and Best History Book by the International Latino Book Awards. \nMarina Sitrin is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Binghamton University. This one-day class is about popular education – an approach to teaching and learning that connects theory\, experience\, and practical work for social change. We’ll draw on the history\, theory and practices of popular education from movements of the poor and dispossessed in the US and around the world\, focusing on the political nature of popular education and approaches that are being developed out of today’s struggles for liberation.

Sabaaneh will discuss his life as an artist\, current projects\, and his work at The Freedom Theatre as an educator. \nThe evening will also include a silent auction of two original works by Sabaaneh. \n* This event is FREE and open to the general public * \nAbout Mohammad Sabaaneh: \nMohammad Sabaaneh\, a talented political cartoonist from Palestine\, has gained worldwide attention for his stark black-and-white sketches\, which draw attention to brutalities of the Israeli occupation and celebrate the Palestinians’ popular resistance. These provocative drawings do not flinch from tackling the tough subjects that confront Palestinians\, from Israel’s everyday injustices in the West Bank to their frequent military operations on Gaza. \nSabaaneh’s work has been published in many newspapers across the Arab World\, and he is the principal political cartoonist for Al-Hayat al-Jadida\, the Palestinian Authority’s daily newspaper. He has also recently published his first book – Black and White. \nFinally\, Sabaaneh has been a board member of The Freedom Theatre in Jenin\, Palestine and continues to lead workshops there\, supporting youth in developing their critical thinking skills and creativity\, and exploring the ways cartoons can be tools for cultural resistance.

SUMMARY:Always With Us? What Jesus Really Said About the Poor
DESCRIPTION:Duration: The course will meet on Tuesdays\, November 27\, December 4\, and December 11\, 5:30-8:30pm. \nContent: This three-part course will reclaim the radical teachings of the Bible around poverty\, wealth and power that have been lost to many of our movements. It will be structured around the acclaimed scholarship of Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis and her book\, Always With Us? What Jesus Really Said About the Poor\, and the pedagogy of “reading the Bible with the poor” or “contextual Bible study.”   \nBecause of the significance the Bible holds for many in our society and because of the way the Bible has been used both as a “text of terror” and as an inspiration for social movements\, the Poverty Initiative and Kairos Center hold the Bible and contextual Bible study – what we term “Reading the Bible with the Poor” – as central work in building a social movement to end poverty\, led by the poor. This pedagogy grows out of examples from South Africa\, Latin American Liberation Theology\, and other experiences of the poor globally reclaiming the biblical mandate for justice\, and we have developed it within our U.S. context. \n  \n
