Participants will be informed of the meeting point. \nA “Poor People’s Walking Tour of Wall Street” has evolved over the years since the 2008 economic crisis\, but it has always been designed first and foremost for leaders emerging from the ranks of the poor and dispossessed – people on the front line of struggles against the interlocking evils\, as Dr. King conceived\, of poverty\, racism\, and militarism. And today\, the fourth horseman of these Apocalyptic forces is the ecological crisis. John Wessel-McCoy\, educator and organizer from the Kairos Center and the University of the Poor\, has conducted tours with grassroots community and religious organizations from across the United States and social movement across the globe. \nWall Street stands above all other command centers of global capitalism\, and that’s why it’s so important that people struggling from below come here to see it for themselves – to reflect on the Wall Street Bull\, the New York Stock Exchange\, to know our history\, and to know who we’re up against. In this system\, all corporations have to go to the bank and serve their shareholders. That is what Wall Street represents. \n“The Poor People’s Walking Tour of Wall Street” helps us to see how all of our isolated fights ultimately lead us here.  All of our roads lead to this modern day version of Rome. It helps us break our isolation and realize our potential power. \n

DESCRIPTION:Duration: 8-week course on Wednesdays 6-8pm\, from October 3 to November 28. \nContent: It is not our fellow artist who is the enemy\, but those who have made art the booty of exploitation\, and who use it as a deodorant for war and fascism. —Arnold Blanch\, First American Artists Congress\, 1936 \nArt can become an alternative form of revolt that both deepens our consciousness and inspires resistance. This 8-week survey will be an exploration of selected pieces of music\, visual art\, and includes the screening of two exemplary\, radical films: Soleil O  (dir. Mel Hondo\, France/Mauritania\, 1967)\, a scathing attack on colonialism and capitalism; and Council of the Gods\, (dir. Kurt Maetzig\, East Germany\, 1950) a fictional film linking Monsanto\, Rockefeller\, and Hitler. \nMusic selections will include works by John Coltrane (1926-1967)\, American jazz saxophonist\, composer\, and civil rights activist; Charles Haden (1938-2014) of the Charlie Haden Music Liberation Orchestra\, American jazz bassist and composer\, also engaged in anti-war and anti-imperialist movements; and Frederic Rzewski (1938-  )\, American composer and pianist\, engaged in anti-prison-industrial complex activity\, as well as being an anti-fascist agitator. Some of the visual art we will consider will be by the German muralist Werner Tuebke (1929-2004)\, including Peasant Wars panorama; Josep Renau (1907-1982) Spanish Civil War Communist\, creator of photomontages of great power and beauty; and Edward Keinholz (1927-1994)\, American anti-imperialist\, anti-U.S. sculptor from the 1960s. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Race and Revolution in the United States
DESCRIPTION:Duration: This class meets for six weeks\, Tuesdays 6-8pm\, from October 9 to November 13. \nContent: In the early 20th Century Black radicals in NY began to theorize the fallout of race ideology as a unique social injury distinct from\, but interconnected with\, class exploitation. They linked racial oppression to capitalism and imperialism\, and black liberation to the socialist project. They also argued that the struggle for socialism in the US  required a strong anti-racist platform and organizing agenda within the socialist movement—a position that differed from the one held by white American socialists at the time. Their analysis of race and class and the organizational conclusions they drew have been foundational for revolutionaries the world over. This course explores the position that historically oppressed groups in the US — Puerto Ricans and Native\, African\, Chinese\, Japanese and Mexican Americans have occupied in the US economy. We outline the Materialist/Marxist analysis of race ideology and how if differs from other interpretations. We also analyze the theoretical and political contributions that radicals of color in the US have made to the fight for human liberation. As a consequence the FBI\, along with other governmental and right-wing organizations were monitoring them\, keeping meticulous files running many thousands of pages\, and making (and carrying out) plans to purge them from the cultural realm.  \nUsing music\, video selections\, news clippings\, and records from extensive Freedom of Information Act filings — including never before released material — this presentation will bring to life these artists and the systematic way they were subject to government surveillance and suppression. \nSpeakers  \nAaron Leonard\, author of Folksingers and the FBI \nMat Callahan\, author of The Explosion of Deferred Dreams \nDJ Dennis O’Neill \nSpeaker Biographies  \nMat Callahan is a musician and author originally from San Francisco\, where he founded Komotion International. He is the author of three books\, Sex\, Death & the Angry Young Man\, Testimony\, and The Trouble with Music as well as the editor of Songs of Freedom: The James Connolly Songbook. SUMMARY:Lessons from the National Union of the Homeless
DESCRIPTION:Duration: Saturday October 21\, 10am-1pm & 2:30-5:30pm. Please note there is a break between sessions\, from 1pm -2:30pm. \nContent: It’s been 30 years since the Tompkins Square Park “riot\,” and the story of how homeless individuals and families organized and built a formidable political force in the 80’s and 90’s is still misunderstood and understudied. \nThis course is an introduction to the National Union of the Homeless (NUH) – an organization led by homeless individuals and families which was active from the mid-80’s to the early 90’s\, and came to include some of the key leaders of the Tompkins Square Park encampment. At its height\, the NUH had over 25\,000 members in over 20 cities\, and led coordinated campaigns to takeover empty HUD housing and demand it be turned over to homeless families to live in. The instructors were all active leaders in the NUH and its affiliated student organization\, Empty the Shelters. The course will cover the context for the rise of the NUH\, the history of the movement\, lessons from its successes and failures\, and the organizing approach it helped to define – “the poor organizing the poor.”

Drawing on religious and cultural references\, news media\, and other sources\, this course will being to reveal the deeply entrenched ideologies that keep society at large from recognizing the breadth and depth of poverty and\, therefore\, prevent us from seeking long-term and real solutions that can end poverty.  \n The first session is taught by Shailly Gupta Barnes\, and the second session is taught by Dr. Colleen Wessel McCoy.

SUMMARY:How to do a Concrete Analysis of Context (October Series)
DESCRIPTION:Three-part class on October 23\, 6-7:30pm\, October 25\, 6-7:30pm\, and October 28\, 2-3:30pm \nBetween the 24-hour news cycle and infinite scrolling newsfeeds on social media we’re exposed to so many injustices and outrages\, rightly demanding our attention\, that we can start to lose sight of the forest for the trees. This workshop aims to teach students how to make sense of all these events and identify the connections between them\, not just through abstract statements about capitalism\, neoliberalism\, systemic racism\, and other concepts\, but through making a concrete analysis of the situation\, based on systematic study. \nThe workshop will define and teach concepts such as structure and context\, strategy and tactics\, correlation of forces and hegemony\, and then engage students in a limited approach to making their own analysis using those concepts.
