Welcome to Spanish for Social Justice! \n  \nAlgarabía Language Co-op is excited to announce that we are offering virtual Spanish classes this spring! \n  \nAlgarabía Language Co-op offers Spanish for Social Justice courses in partnership with The People’s Forum. We offer classes at the beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced levels of fluency for those interested in topics related to social justice\, politics\, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working-class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. There is an emphasis on validating U.S. Spanish and other varieties of Spanish that are often considered “non-standard.” We actively include the use of “vos” as used in Central America.  \n  \nAs part of Algarabía’s mission to make our courses accessible\, we offer sliding-scale rates and flexible payment plans. You’ll be able to select your payment tier and plan directly within the application form\, based on your financial circumstances. \nABOUT OUR LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION: At Algarabía Language Co-op\, we see language learning as a meaningful\, collaborative\, and transformative process reflected in our training in hands-on communicative and task-based language teaching approaches and our use of popular education in the language classroom. His research and practice concerning decolonization and resistance led to the founding in 2009 of a Beirut-based artists’ collective\, ‎جمع اليد (Jamaa Al-Yad). He currently manages the studio and workshops for Frontline Arts in Branchburg\, NJ. \nOne of Many artists\, Peter and Hamzah\, create fashion\, art\, and music as a way to drive positive change in the world. Participants will learn several techniques (collagraph\, charcoal transfer and image transfer) to make and take home one-of-a-kind prints on paper. Students will explore layering\, texture\, and composition through hands-on experimentation. Beginner friendly\, no experience needed. All materials are provided. \n__ \nKaili Woop is a multimedia artist and designer based in Astoria\, Queens\, working across printmaking and wearable art. She is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and a 2023 recipient of the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Award and the SUNY Chancellor Award. Her work has been exhibited at The Museum at FIT\, The Alpha Workshops Gallery\, and US+U Gallery. Woop has over three years of experience teaching hands on printmaking workshops with organizations including Oolite Arts\, Wynwood Walls\, US+U Gallery\, Yonkers Arts\, and Queens Collaborative. She is currently focused on developing a wearable art and design brand using traditional printmaking techniques for clothing and accessories.

After an introduction to core design principles\, participants will spend this workshop developing their own visual language to produce a poster using analog and digital techniques. \nThrough demonstrations\, critiques\, and collaborative discussion\, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of design as a tool for social change. No previous experience necessary! \n____ \nJohn Kudos and David Jon Walker are cofounders of WeType and partners at KASA Collective. Drawing from their work designing exhibitions\, public experiences\, and typefaces rooted in cultural research\, David and John will guide participants through the anatomy of an effective poster—from message and audience to hierarchy\, format\, and production.

SUMMARY:BOOK TALK | Motown & The Making of Working-Class Revolutionaries with Jerome Scott and Walda Katz-Fishman
DESCRIPTION:An inside look at how the experiences of Black workers created lifelong revolutionaries \nMotown and the Making of Working-Class Revolutionaries offers a fresh perspective on class\, race\, and revolution in the United States. Drawing on more than forty hours of interviews with former members of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers\, Scott and Katz-Fishman share the rich story of the League\, including the women and students. That story includes the history of the automotive industry in Detroit\, the 1967 Detroit Rebellion\, and the wildcat strike that sparked the Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement (DRUM). The authors describe the rise of the League from 1968 to 1971. They explore the centrality of struggle and political education as the League split and a section of League comrades moved into revolutionary organizations and social movement spaces\, many of which remain active today. League comrades share their analysis of the current moment and staying the course of revolutionary struggle. \n\nJerome Scott\, a former labor organizer in the Detroit auto plants in the 1960s-70s and a founding member of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers\, was the founding director of Project South: Institute for the Elimination of Poverty & Genocide. He is a political educator in movement and labor organizations in the South and nationally\, and a contributing author/co-author to political education toolkits and numerous articles on the capitalist crisis\, the digital and AI technological revolution\, and class\, race\, and the revolutionary process. He was co-recipient of the American Sociological Association 2004 Award for the Public Understanding of Sociology\, is a board member of the General Baker Institute\, and is a member of the League of Revolutionaries for a New America. \nWalda Katz-Fishman\, a scholar activist and professor emerita of sociology at Howard University\, was a founding member of Project South: Institute for the Elimination of Poverty & Genocide. She facilitates political education in academic and movement spaces and is a contributing author/co-author and editor of popular education toolkits and numerous chapters and articles on the global capitalist crisis\, the AI/digital revolution\, class\, race and gender\, and revolutionary transformation. This one-day class covers the basic process of prep\, choosing photos/objects\, and exposure/printing. Cyanotype 101 is beginner-friendly and perfect for those who haven’t explored the medium before. \nAll materials will be provided\, including a variety of photo negatives. Participants are invited to bring in items of their own to experiment printing with. Houston\, Texas) is a New York-based\, self-taught artist\, poet\, and educator with a practice spanning printmaking\, installation\, and mixed media with a central focus on the cyanotype process. Fuller’s work emerges from historical analysis and introspection\, exploring what lies beyond the constraints of family\, the church\, trauma\, and the cultural realities of the South. Together\, we’ll gather inspiration from collage artists who have created intentional Agitprop and then be provided with prompts and materials to create their own. \nSession theme: Black August \n__ \nAshley Marie Lagrange\, (They/Them) is a therapist\, coach\, and collage artist born\, raised and currently residing in Queens\, New York to a multigenerational household Dominican l household. Ashley works in the day as a politicized therapist and coach for the QTBIPOC population which stemmed from their lived experience with madness and grassroots peer support organizing. Ashley is also a Collage Artist\, having taught and facilitated various classes and workshop spaces on the analog art form. Ashley is a member of DegrowNYC and previously sat as their Propaganda Chair.

Embroidery can be used for image making\, visible mending\, text\, multimedia collage\, and even to create 3-D forms. Participants will begin with this session learning a ‘vocabulary’ of traditional embroidery stitches\, making samplers to practice a variety of line\, texture\, images\, and techniques. In the second half of the workshop\, participants will apply what they’ve learned to create a wearable patch. We will learn some transfer techniques and how to stitch text. Patches could be an image or a political statement. Any level of experience is welcome. \n__ \nAnnie Zirin is an artist and educator with over 20 years of teaching experience. Annie’s studio practice involves fiber arts such as weaving\, crochet and embroidery\, as well as political comics and graphic arts. Using wax-resist techniques\, participants will learn how to design and create patterns on fabric while exploring the relationship between material\, memory\, and storytelling.\nThe workshop emphasizes experimentation\, cultural appreciation\, and hands-on learning\, making batik approachable for beginners while still engaging for those with prior textile experience. Participants will be guided through the full batik process right away from sketching ideas and applying wax resist\, to layering natural or fabric-safe dyes\, and finally revealing their finished textile piece.\nAlongside technical instruction\, the workshop encourages participants to reflect on personal or collective narratives they wish to express through pattern\, symbolism\, and color. \n__ \nDrishti Jaggi is a textile artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work centers on traditional batik techniques\, natural dye practices\, and community-based art education. DESCRIPTION:LOW-TECH PRINTMAKING: STENCILS & SCREENS w/ KERY RODRIGUEZ \nTwo-day | Friday\, August 21 5:30-8:30PM AND Saturday\, August 22\, 3-6PM    \nThis two-day workshop will introduce participants to mesh printing\, a low-tech printmaking process that combines modern DIY screen printing methods with late 19th century stencil-based image making. \nThrough the use of mylar stencils and modeling paste\, adaptable printing matrices will be created from window screen mesh; these “screens” will be highly capable of transferring images onto a variety of different hard and fabric surfaces. This workshop aims to expand the participants’ understanding of historical stencil and mesh-based printing techniques while encouraging a low cost\, DIY approach to printmaking. \n__ \nAs a multimedia artist\, Kery Rodriguez’ practice initially began in garment intervention. Pre-owned clothing was used as a site for countercultural expression. His work now explores reuse and recontextualization across collage\, digital design\, and alternative printmaking. Across these mediums\, Kery maintains a grounded focus in process and experimentation. With this approach\, he has been able to develop an adaptable low cost printmaking method that can work on a variety of surfaces. \nThrough facilitating collaborative learning environments\, he aims to share accessible creative tools that encourage participants to rethink material use.
