This course will give you a solid base and allow you to start communicating with Portuguese native speakers. \nThe program will introduce grammar structures in practical ways\, and some writing exercises. The intensive course runs twice weekly on Zoom\, and an extra hour of required individual practice exercises. With enslaved workers brought from Africa\, more heavily during the 17th\, 18th and 19th centuries\, many different languages and backgrounds were also influential. \nBrazilian Portuguese continued to evolve as the common language amongst all living in Brazil\, and the one permitted to be spoken by the colonizers. However\, new words referring to foods\, materials and relationships with no correlations in Europe\, started to influence Continental Portuguese\, even though the grammar and syntax structures remained the same.  \nRevolutionary literacy methods created for adults\, by the influential educator Paulo Freire in the 1960s\, author of the Pedagogy of the Oppressed\, finally started to prioritize local people’s needs and generate wider political consciousness about the role of language in political emancipation to the elite oppressors. It is still used to combat illiteracy and poverty\, and to help achieve freedom\, much beyond Brazil’s borders.

We offer classes at the beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced levels of fluency for those interested in topics related to social justice\, politics\, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working-class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. We offer classes at the beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced levels of fluency for those interested in topics related to social justice\, politics\, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working-class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. In 2016 she co-founded the Defend Democracy in Brazil Committee in New York (DDB-NY) with a group of activists who fight for democracy\, social justice\, and defend social movements in Brazil. DDB is a member of The People’s Forum since it opened. Natalia is also a Lecturer of Portuguese at City College/CUNY\, and has lectured at NYU\, Rutgers University\, Columbia University\, in Portuguese language\, social engagement\, collaboration\, solo performance & activism. She has a Bachelor’s degree in History from the University of São Paulo and a Master’s degree in Performance & Interactive Media Arts from CUNY/ Brooklyn College.

Living in New York since 1998\, she founded\nthe multidisciplinary arts collaborative Syncretic Pleasures to continue to teach\, while also translating\, producing and performing works by Brazilian\nauthors\, including her own. In 2016 she co-founded the Defend Democracy in Brazil Committee in New York (DDB-NY) with a group of activists who\nfight for democracy\, social justice\, and defend social movements in Brazil. DDB is a member of The People’s Forum. Natalia’s most recent teaching/\nlecturing includes courses for independent non-profit organizations and institutions like CUNY Graduate Center\, Brooklyn College and City College\,\nNYU Tisch and Hemispheric Institute\, Rutgers University\, Columbia University\, in Portuguese language\, Brazilian Art & Social History\, social\nengagement\, collaboration\, solo performance & activism. DESCRIPTION:¡Bienvenides! Welcome to Spanish for Social Justice\n\nSpanish for Social Justice courses are offered by Algarabía Language Co-op in partnership with The People’s Forum. We offer courses at the BEGINNER\, INTERMEDIATE\, and ADVANCED levels of fluency to those interested in topics of social justice\, politics\, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes\, and using a communicative and popular education approach\, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking\, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in New York City (Lenapehoking)\, one of the largest and most diverse Spanish-speaking cities in the world and the rest of Turtle Island and Abya Yala. \n\nThis summer brings new beginnings: we’re welcoming a brand-new Español III\, a space designed especially for practicing\, strengthening\, and rooting what you’ve already started to grow. With enslaved workers brought from Africa\, more heavily during the 17th\, 18th and 19th centuries\, many different languages and backgrounds were also influential. Brazilian Portuguese continued to evolve as the common language amongst all living in Brazil\, and the one permitted to be spoken by the colonizers. However\, new words referring to foods\, materials and relationships with no correlations in Europe\, started to influence Continental Portuguese\, even though the grammar and syntax structures remained the same. \nRevolutionary literacy methods created for adults\, by the influential educator Paulo Freire in the 1960s\, author of the Pedagogy of the Oppressed\, finally started to prioritize local people’s needs and generate wider political consciousness about the role of language in political emancipation to the elite oppressors. It is still used to combat illiteracy and poverty\, and to help achieve freedom\, much beyond Brazil’s borders.

Portuguese is arguably among the 9 or 10 most spoken languages in the world\, but only 5 percent of its speakers live in its original home Portugal. It is estimated that 270 million people\nspeak Portuguese today\, amongst which nearly 254 million are native speakers. It is the second most spoken Romance language\, after Spanish. Brazil’s 211 million people is the largest Portuguese-speaking population in the world. \nAs a colonial language\, it suffered many transformations\, particular to each locale. It is nowadays also a result of cultural resistance of the indigenous and enslaved people during colonialism. It is spoken in the U.S particularly in the Northeast\, in California and in Florida\, where native Portuguese speakers\, who are immigrants from Africa\, South Asia\, Europe and Brazil have concentrated historically.
